A graph-theoretic approach to integrated process and control system synthesis

A graph-theoretic method for integration of process and control system (IPCS) syntheses has been proposed in the present paper. The foundation of this integration is a well-established, graph-theoretic approach to process synthesis in conjunction with the analysis of structural controllability based on digraph-type process models. A directed bipartite graph, the CP-graph, has been introduced for unambiguous representation of an IPCS structure. The notion of CP-graph has given rise to a set of axioms for describing the combinatorially feasible and controllable structures. The maximal controllable structure of an IPCS synthesis problem has been defined as the union of combinatorially feasible and controllable IPCS structures; obviously, the optimal IPCS structure must be a substructure of this maximal controllable structure. Thus, the mathematical programming model, e.g., MINLP model, of an IPCS synthesis problem should be derived from the maximal controllable structure. The fundamental combinatorial algorithm of IPCS synthesis, i.e., algorithm CMSG, for identifying this maximal controllable structure has been formulated. The complexity of this algorithm has been proved to be polynomial on the size of the problem; its efficacy is illustrated with a relatively simple example. The resultant IPCS structures are compared with the structures synthesized without considering their control systems.

A least squares identification method is studied that estimates a finite number of expansion coefficients in the series expansion of a transfer function, where the expansion is in terms of recently introduced generalized basis functions. The basis functions are orthogonal in H 2 and generalize the pulse, Laguerre and Kautz bases. One of their important properties is that when chosen properly they can substantially increase the speed of convergence of the series expansion. This leads to accurate approximate models with only few coefficients to be estimated. Explicit bounds are derived for the bias and variance errors that occur in the parameter estimates as well as in the resulting transfer function estimates.

MODULA-2 BASED MULTITASKING ENVIRONMENT FOR A FLEXIBLE BIPROCESSOR controlLER

This paper presents the most important issues of a real-time software package developed for the industrial multiloop controller MMC-90. MMC-90 is a biprocessor system based on the concept of a two-level controller. On the lower level of complexity, the base control processor performs the basic control functions. On the higher level of complexity, the flexible control coprocessor executes complex functions on request from the control tasks on the base control processor. All the software on the control coprocessor is written in Modula-2. The corresponding multitasking environment was designed as a set of Modula-2 libraries at various horizontal and vertical decomposition levels. On the control coprocessor a preemptive, priority based scheduler as well as a high level interprocess communication and synchronization mechanism has been developed. Communication between the processors is realized by means of a fast bi-directional communication channel, which is implemented via dual-port RAM. The developed system opens the door to applications of modem control algorithms in industrial practice.

Success in the twenty‐first century will require many manufacturingenterprises to have the innovative flexibility to respond rapidly tomarket desires, to produce top quality products, to deliver almostinstantaneously, and to provide superb service. Built on leanmanufacturing, the agile manufacturing paradigm is an evolutionary step,partially based on a combination of flexible manufacturing, integratedproduct development and stratgic partnering. An agile manufactuingenterprice is a dynamically reconfigurable organization of independentcompanies which forms individual companies optimized for the specificsof each market opportunity. Key to the success of such a paradigm is theability (for often geographically dispersed functions) to share fullythe technical information required and used for product design,development, validation, production and service. Grey Dynamics of Heat Exchanger Networks

A robust modeling method of Heat Exchanger Networks (HENs) with structured parametric perturbations has been described in this paper which results in a LFT form. The LFT of the overall HEN system can be generated algorithmically from the model of the heat exchangers and from the network topology. Based on these modeling paradigms the effect of uncertainties represented by specific Δ block structures have been analysed by frequency domain n analysis in order to get an insight into the causes of potential large overshoot-type responses. The proposed method has been illustrated on the simple example of a countercurrent heat exchanger with by-pass.

The purpose of the paper is to study the design of the active wheel suspension system. The goal of the control design is the disturbance attenuation with respect to the road disturbances when some of the physical parameters of the system are uncertain. On the basis of a linear quarter-car model the tire stiffness and suspension stiffness are assummed to be uncertain. In this paper the authors deal with some new robust design methods. They examine the applicability of H ∞ control in case of the active suspension system using a quarter-car model. The problem is solved as a direct state-feedback H ∞ control problem and in case of structured uncertainties as an RLQR (Robust LQR) design task. On the basis of combination of these two methods new procedure is proposed.

This paper discusses the problem of modeling time varying system perturbations and its application to observer-based detection filter design in uncertain linear systems. Robustness issues with respect to structured time varying system perturbations are considered. Our basic contribution is that applying differential algebraic methods and matrix lie-algebra in describing the effect of them varying system perturbation, it is possible to construct an extended linear time invariant(LTI) system and associated observer such that the solution of the design problem can be performed using algebraic methods and geometric concepts similar to the case of time invariant situations. At the same time the filter can be made robust with respect to these perturbations.

The Transient Energy Function (TEF) method has been intensely investigated over the last decade as a reliable and accurate tool for transient stability assessment of multimachine power systems. In this paper we propose the Potential Energy Boundary Surface (PEBS) based method for direct analysis of transient stability. The critical value of transient energy and the Critical Clearing Time (T_CCT) are evaluated without the need for successive calculation and memorization of the system kinetic and potential energy values along the sustained fault trajectory. The method is used for determination of output features in the training phase of the neural‐net based transient security assessment. The proposed approach is tested on the well‐known ten‐generator New England test system demonstrating the validity and accuracy of obtained results. Copyright © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Limit properties of the QSIM algorithm with respect to the spurious behaviours have been analysed in this short paper, in the case of approximating landmark sets and non-qualitative right-hand side functions. It has been shown that at least two types of spurious behaviour do not disappear in the limit. The first type corresponds to the identically constant solution and appears when the solution passes the zero location of the right-hand side function, i.e. at a critical point. The second type is a consequence of the rigid sign-based description of qualitative directions and it may appear in every multivariable case (for sets of qualitative differential equations). The commonly applied global filters do not remove the source of the problems. A mathematically correct solution would be using the extensions of the usual numerical methods for integrating ordinary differential equations operating on intervals. © 1992.
