Today’s production methods are challenged by changing paradigms from a static constraint mass production and mass customization to continuing personalization and regionalization of product, production and markets. It is yet unclear what future production systems will be the most appropriate, how they will look like and how the current, uncertain trends in manufacturing can be tackled most effectively. In this paper, first results from a comprehensive questionnaire on »The Intelligent Production of the Future«, performed by a consortium of researchers from the institute for computer Science and control (SZTAKI) and the Fraunhofer-institute for Manufacturing Engineering and automation IPA are outlined. During this survey, stakeholders and peers from more than 70 companies and research institutions in Germany, Austria and Hungary have been asked to share their impressions, describe their opinions and rate central statements on future production systems, methodologies and trends. The paper outlines the most important topics of future production systems and lessons learned during the evaluation of the survey.

This paper solves the vehicle merging problem by trajectory tracking of networked vehicles to combine multiple vehicle streams. Trajectory tracking is achieved with distributed feed-forward controllers that consider the couplings between the vehicles by modifying the local reference trajectories. For this purpose, the controllers are connected via a communication network. Different communication strategies are discussed and it is shown that the proposed tracking controllers solve the merging problem with arbitrary linear vehicle models.

This paper presents a solution to the vehicle merging problem using distributed controllers. In order to guarantee collision avoidance, a state feedback law is utilised to generate externally positive dynamics for the controlled vehicles. These vehicles are temporarily connected via a communication network that enables them to exchange information. The networked control scheme handles the lane switching scenario with a feed-forward control law to create a gap for the lane changing vehicle. It is shown that the proposed controllers guarantee a collision-free vehicle merging.

To weaken the condition required by the classical Lyapunov stability theory, a novel comparison theorem is introduced, which makes infinitesimal operator of Lyapunov functions be able to take both positive and negative. This paper studies the robustness of large-scale interconnected systems with respect to external disturbances, focussing on their scalability properties. Specifically, a notion of scalability is introduced that asks for these robustness properties to remain unchanged under a structural change of the system, such as the addition/removal of a subsystem or a change in the interconnection structure. Both necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of the interconnection structure and edge weights, are given under which elementary structural changes are scalable. The results are illustrated through a simple example.
