In this paper we propose a method for segmenting characters in multispectral images of ancient documents. Due to the low quality of the document images the main idea of our study is to combine the multispectral behavior and contextual spatial information. Therefore we utilize a Markov Random Field model using the spectral information of the images and stroke properties to include spatial dependencies of the characters. The whole process is parameter free since we calculate the stroke properties and the Gaussian parameters for the imaging model automatically. The study shows the effectiveness of using multispectral data for a computer aided analysis of ancient text documents. We compare the results of the proposed segmentation method to traditional methods based on color images as well as gray level images.

In this paper, we establish a correspondence between the incremental algorithm for computing AT-models [8,9] and the one for computing persistent homology [6,14,15]. We also present a decremental algorithm for computing AT-models that allows to extend the persistence computation to a wider setting. Finally, we show how to combine incremental and decremental techniques for persistent homology computation. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Building facade classification by architectural styles allows categorization of large databases of building images into semantic categories belonging to certain historic periods, regions and cultural influences. image databases sorted by architectural styles permit effective and fast image search for the purposes of content-based image retrieval, 3D reconstruction, 3D city-modeling, virtual tourism and indexing of cultural heritage buildings. Building facade classification is viewed as a task of classifying separate architectural structural elements, like windows, domes, towers, columns, etc, as every architectural style applies certain rules and characteristic forms for the design and construction of the structural parts mentioned. In the context of building facade architectural style classification the current paper objective is to classify the architectural style of facade windows. Typical windows belonging to Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance/Baroque European main architectural periods are classified. The approach is based on clustering and learning of local features, applying intelligence that architects use to classify windows of the mentioned architectural styles in the training stage. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Classification and reconstruction of archaeological fragments is based on the profile, which is the cross-section of the fragment in the direction of the rotational axis of symmetry. In order to segment the profile into primitives like rim, wall, and base, rules based on expert knowledge are created. The input data for the estimation of the profile is a set of points produced by the acquisition system. A function fitting this set is constructed and later on processed to find the characteristic points necessary to classify the original fragment. The one we propose is based on B-splines or bell-shaped splines. © 2002 IEEE.

An algorithm for the automatic construction of a 3d model of archaeological vessels using two different 3d algorithms is presented. In archeology the determination of the exact volume of arbitrary vessels is of importance since this provides information about the manufacturer and the usage of the vessel. To acquire the 3d shape of objects with handles is complicated, since occlusions of the object's surface are introduced by the handle and can only be resolved by taking multiple views. Therefore, the 3d reconstruction is based on a sequence of images of the object taken from different viewpoints with two different algorithms;shape from silhouette and shape from structured light. The output of both algorithms are then used to construct a single 3d model. Results of the algorithm developed are presented for both synthetic and real input images. © 2002 IEEE.

The objective of semantic segmentation in microscopic images is to extract the cellular, nuclear or tissue components. This problem is challenging due to the large variations of these components features (size, shape, orientation or texture). In this paper we improve the technique presented in [17] used to identify the epithelial nuclei (crypt) against interstitial nuclei in microscopic images taken from colon tissues. In the proposed enhanced approach, the crypt inner boundary is detected using the closing morphological pyramid instead of morphological hierarchy. The outer crypt border is determined by the epithelial nuclei, overlapped by the maximal isoline of the inner boundary. The use of sampling in building the pyramid offers computational efficiency, reduces the amount of used memory, increase the robustness and preserve the quality results. An analysis of the two approaches is performed considering the number of pixels processed to create each level. Also the relation between the levels of the hierarchical structures is established. © 2011 Faculty of Auto Control.

Motivated by the requirements of archaeologists we are developing an automated system for acquisition, documentation and management of daily finds of excavations. These daily finds can be separated into large objects like remainders of architecture and small objects of ancient daily life - like ceramics and coins. Ceramics especially are found in numbers of tens of thousands on virtually every excavation, because ceramics have been in use for thousands of years. Until the present day these finds are documented by manual drawings. There is a similar situation in the case of coins, where manual drawings are often used to abstract them from photographs. Therefore we propose an automated acquisition and documentation system based on digital cameras and structured light for small findings. For ceramics we provide further processing to estimate horizontal cross-sections (profile-lines) for printed documentation, as it is done by manual drawing. For this a proper orientation of the acquired 3D-model is required and automatically estimated based on the assumption that ceramics were made on rotational plates (wheels). We are aware that ceramics might not always have been manufactured on rotational plates, because the wheel was not invented everywhere as for the example in the Americas. Even though ceramics from such areas appear to be rotational symmetric, we developed a method based on shape and symmetry analysis to determine the manufacturing techniques of ceramics. This helps to answer another archaeological question regarding the technological advance of an ancient culture. Results for accuracy and performance are shown on real data from recent interdisciplinary projects together with archaeologists from Austria, Germany, Israel and Peru. Furthermore we present preliminary results of the integration of coin classification in our documentation system. We present a new method to determine contraction kernels for the construction of graph pyramids. The new method works with undirected graphs and yields a reduction factor of at least 2.0. This means that with our method the number of vertices in the subgraph induced by any set of contractible edges is reduced to half or less by a single parallel contraction. Our method yields better reduction factors than the stochastic decimation algorithm, in all tests. The lower bound of the reduction factor becomes crucial with large images. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Head detection is an important, but difficult task, if no restrictions such as static illumination, frontal face appearance or uniform background can be assumed. We present a system that is able to perform head detection under very general conditions by employing a 3D measurement system namely a structured light distance measurement. An algorithm of head detection from sparse 3D data (19x19 data points) is developed that reconstructs a 3D surface over the image plane and detects head hypotheses of ellipsoidal shape. We demonstrate that detection and rough localization is possible in up to 90% of the images. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.
