Research and development activities are facing a continuing globalization. Networks are getting more important than companies or institutes. Main reasons for this trend are: (Faster) access to new knowledge and technology and its improved transfer. Economic reasons. Use the particular advantages of multicultural work environments. Together with a steadily improving technology, the global information society is not far away. In particular, the networking and virtual environment technologies are making much progress and are ready to enable shared, distributed, cooperative activities. This panel addresses network infrastructure, systems, and applications related to multi-user virtual environments, especially the global (intercontinental/international) aspects of these issues. The panelists will summarize their "lessons learned," will highlight latest activities, and share with the audience their short/mid-term vision on global, multi-user virtual environments. The panelists intend to enrich their presentations with (multicontinental) live demonstrations. Furthermore, specific applications are showcased at "Digital Bayou" (Where No Man Has Gone Before). © 1996 ACM.

Quick extraction of the extremum eigenpairs of a real symmetric matrix is very important in engineering. Using neural networks to complete this operation is in a parallel manner and can achieve high performance. So, this paper proposes a very concise functional neural network (FNN) to compute the largest (or smallest) eigenvalue and one corresponding eigenvector. After transforming the FNN into a differential equation, and obtaining the analytic solution, the convergence properties are completely analyzed. By this FNN, the method that can compute the extremum eigenpairs whether the matrix is non-definite, positive definite or negative definite is designed. Finally, three examples show the validity. Comparing with the other ones used in the same field, the proposed FNN is very simple and concise, so it is very easy to realize. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Head pose estimation is an important step in many face related applications. In this paper, we propose to use random regression forests to estimate head poses in 2D face images. Given a 2D face image, Gabor filters are first applied to extract raw high-dimensional features. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is then used to reduce the feature dimension. Random regression forests are constructed in the low dimensional feature space. Unlike traditional random forests, when generating tree predictors in the forests we weight the features according to the eigenvalues associated with their corresponding LDA axes. The proposed method has been evaluated on a set of 2D face images synthesized from the BU-3DFE database and on the CMU-PIE database. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © Springer International Publishing 2013.

This paper provides a classification of perceptual issues in augmented reality, created with a visual processing and interpretation pipeline in mind. We organize issues into ones related to the environment, capturing, augmentation, display, and individual user differences. We also illuminate issues associated with more recent platforms such as handhelds or projector-camera systems. Throughout, we describe current approaches to addressing these problems, and suggest directions for future research. ©2010 IEEE.

Traditional RGB reflectance and light data suffers from the problem of metamerism and is not suitable for ren-dering purposes where exact color reproduction under many different lighting conditions is needed. Nowadays many setups for cheap and fast acquisition of RGB or similar trichromatic datasets are available. In contrast to this, multi- or even hyper-spectral measurements require costly hardware and have severe limitations in many cases. In this paper, we present an approach to combine efficiently captured RGB data with spectral data that can be captured with small additional effort for example by scanning a single line of an image using a spectral line-scanner. Our algorithm can infer spectral reflectances and illumination from such sparse spectral and dense RGB data. Unlike other approaches, our method reaches acceptable perceptual errors with only three channels for the dense data and thus enables further use of highly efficient RGB capture systems. This way, we are able to provide an easier and cheaper way to capture spectral textures, BRDFs and environment maps for the use in spectral rendering systems. © 2010 The Eurographics Association and Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

Dimensionality reduction methods like Principal Component Analysis (PCA) have become commonplace for the compression of large datasets in computer graphics. One important application is the compression of Bidirectional Texture Functions (BTF). However, the use of such techniques has still many limitations that arise from the large size of the input data which results in impractically high compression times. In this paper, we address these shortcomings and present a method which allows for efficient parallelized computation of the PCA of a large BTF matrix. The matrix is first split into several blocks for which the PCA can be performed independently and thus in parallel. We scale the single subproblems in such a way, that they can be solved in-core using the EM-PCA algorithm. This allows us to perform the calculation on current GPUs exploiting their massive parallel computing power. The eigenspaces determined for the individual blocks are then merged to obtain the PCA of the whole dataset. This way nearly arbitrarily sized matrices can be processed considerably faster than by serial algorithms. Thus, BTFs with much higher spatial and angular resolution can be compressed in reasonable time. © The Eurographics Association 2009.

This work considers the problem of metamorphosis interpolation between two freeform planar curves. Given two planar parametric curves, the curvature signature of the two curves is linearly blended, yielding a gradual change that is not only smooth but also employs intrinsic curvature shape properties, and hence is highly appealing. In order to be able to employ this curvature blending, we present a constructive scheme to derive curvature signatures of parameter curves. Additionally, we propose a scheme to reconstruct a curve from its curvature signature.

Efficient and realistic rendering of cloth is of great interest especially in the context of e-commerce. Aside from the simulation of cloth draping, the rendering has to provide the "look and feel" of the fabric itself. In this paper we present a novel interactive rendering algorithm to preserve this "look and feel" of different fabrics. This is done by using the bidirectional texture function (BTF) of the fabric, which is acquired from a rectangular probe and after synthesis, mapped onto the simulated geometry. Instead of fitting a special type of bidirectional reflection distribution function (BRDF) model to each texel of our BTF, we generate view-dependent texture-maps using a principal component analysis of the original data. These view-dependent texture maps are then illuminated and rendered using either point-light sources or high dynamic range environment maps by exploiting current graphics hardware. In both cases, self-shadowing caused by geometry is taken into account. For point light sources, we also present a novel method to generate smooth shadow boundaries on the geometry. Depending on the geometrical complexity and the sampling density of the environment map, the illumination can be changed interactively. To ensure interactive frame rates for denser samplings or more complex objects, we introduce a principal component based decomposition of the illumination of the geometry. The high quality of the results is demonstrated by several examples. The algorithm is also suitable for materials other than cloth, as far as these materials have a similar reflectance behavior. © The Eurographics Association 2003.

Measured material representations like Bidirectional Texture Functions or Reflectance Fields offer very realistic appearance but the user is currently not capable of changing this appearance in an effective and intuitive way. Such editing operations would require a low-dimensional but expressive model for appearance that exposes only a small set of intuitively editable parameters (1D-sliders, 2D-maps) to the user but preserves all visually relevant details. In this paper we present a novel editing technique for complex spatially varying materials. It is based on the observation that we are already good in modeling the basic geometric structure of many natural and manmade materials but still have not found effective models for the detailed small-scale geometry and the interaction of light with these materials. Our main idea is to use procedural geometry to define the basic structure of a material and then to enrich this structure with the BTF information captured from real materials. By employing recent algorithms for real-time texture synthesis and BTF compression our technique allows interactive editing. © 2007 Eurographics Association. All rights reserved.
