Content based 3D shape retrieval for broad domains like the World Wide Web has recently gained considerable attention in computergraphics community. One of the main challenges in this context is the mapping of 3D objects into compact canonical representations referred to as descriptors, which serve as search keys during the retrieval process. The descriptors should have certain desirable properties like invariance under scaling, rotation and translation. Very importantly, they should possess descriptive power providing a basis for similarity measure between three-dimensional objects which is close to the human notion of resemblance. In this paper we advocate the usage of so-called 3D Zernike invariants as descriptors for content based 3D shape retrieval. The basis polynomials of this representation facilitate computation of invariants under the above transformations. Some theoretical results have already been summarized in the past from the aspect of pattern recognition and shape analysis. We provide practical analysis of these invariants along with algorithms and computational details. Furthermore, we give a detailed discussion on influence of the algorithm parameters like type and resolution of the conversion into a volumetric function, number of utilized coefficients, etc. As is revealed by our study, the 3D Zernike descriptors are natural extensions of spherical harmonics based descriptors, which are reported to be among the most successful representations at present. We conduct a comparison of 3D Zernike descriptors against these regarding computational aspects and shape retrieval performance.

Complex models generated e.g. with a laser range scanner often consist of several thousand or million triangles. For efficient rendering this high number of primitives has to be reduced. An important property of mesh reduction - or simplification - algorithms used for rendering is the control over the introduced geometric error. In general, the better this control is, the slower the simplification algorithm becomes. This is especially a problem for out-of-core simplification, since the processing time quickly reaches several hours for high-quality simplification. In this paper we present a new efficient algorithm to measure the Hausdorff distance between two meshes by sampling the meshes only in regions of high distance. In addition to comparing two arbitrary meshes, this algorithm can also be applied to check the Hausdorff error between the simplified and original meshes during simplification. By using this information to accept or reject a simplification operation, this method allows fast simplification while guaranteeing a user-specified geometric error. This book contains the proceedings of the 10th Eurographics Workshop on Rendering, which took place from the 21st to the 23rd of June, 1999, in Granada, Spain. Origi nally an outgrowth of the annual Eurographics meeting, the workshop was organized by a dedicated group of researchers who felt there was insufficient opportunity at Eu rographics and Siggraph to exchange ideas specifically on rendering. Over the past 9 years, the workshop has become renown as an international watershed for top quality work in this field, attracting between 50 and 100 attendees each year to share their latest research. This year we received a total of 63 submissions. Each paper was carefully reviewed by two of the 25 international programme committee members, as well as two external reviewers, selected by the co-chairs from a pool of 71 individuals. (The programme committee and external reviewers are listed following the contents pages.) In this new review process, all submissions and reviews were handledelectronically, with the ex ception of videos submitted with a few of the papers. This streamlined the review process considerably, while reducing the costs and confusion associated with courier delivery of hundreds of papers.
