Presented is the search for anomalous Higgs boson decays into two axion-like particles (ALPs) using the full Run 2 data set of $$140\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $$13\,\text {TeV}$$ recorded by the ATLAS experiment. The ALPs are assumed to decay into two photons, providing sensitivity to recently proposed models that could explain the $$(g-2)_\mu $$ discrepancy. This analysis covers an ALP mass range from 100 to $$62\,\text {GeV}$$ and ALP-photon couplings in the range $$10^{-7}\,\text {TeV}^{-1}

In this work we provide a model-independent experimental evaluation of the degree of isospin equilibration taking place in 58,64Ni+58,64Ni collisions at 32 MeV/nucleon across varying reaction centralities. This result has been obtained by combining the complementary information provided by two different datasets, sharing common characteristics. The first dataset has been acquired with the INDRA setup and has been used to implement a model-independent reconstruction of the impact parameter. The second dataset has been acquired in the first experimental campaign of the coupled INDRA-FAZIA apparatus at GANIL. The neutron-to-proton content of the quasiprojectile remnant measured by FAZIA has been employed as isospin observable. The effect of isospin diffusion has been evidenced by means of the isospin transport ratio, reported as a function of the impact parameter of the collision. The evolution towards isospin equilibration from semiperipheral to more central collisions is clearly extracted. This experimental result, expanding our previous works (Phys. Rev. C 106, 024603 (2022) and Phys. Rev. C 108, 054611 (2023)), can be compared with the predictions of any transport model, and can thus be used to set constraints on the behavior of the symmetry energy term of the nuclear Equation of State at sub- to saturation densities. Large vertically-mounted high-resolution multitouch displays are becoming increasingly available for interactive data visualisation. Such devices are well-suited to small-team collaborative visual analysis. In particular, the visual analysis of large high-dimensional datasets can benefit from high-resolution displays capable of showing multiple coordinated views. This paper identifies some of the advantages of using large, high-resolution displays for visual analytics in general, and introduces a set of interactions to explore high-dimensional datasets on large vertically-mounted high-resolution multi-touch displays using scatterplots. A set of touch interactions for collaborative visual analysis of scatterplots have been implemented and are presented. Finally, three perception-based level of detail techniques are introduced for such displays as a concept for further implementation.

Sorting unsigned permutations by reversals is an NP-hard optimization problem with applications in computational molecular biology. Several approximation and metaheuristic algorithms were proposed, among them, in a previous work, a competitive genetic algorithm and its parallel version using island models were proposed. In this paper, focusing on improving accuracy, new island models are proposed by diversifying the distribution of genetic material between islands through static and dynamic communication topologies. In static topologies, communication between islands is predefined and maintained during the computation, while in dynamic topologies the communication is continuously modified. The proposed island models use parallelism in a global and a local level, in which respectively, the exchange of individuals between islands and the fitness computation occurs. Results from the experiments performed with randomly generated synthetic permutations show that parallel island models using both dynamic and static communication topologies outperform parallel approaches found in the literature in terms of run-time as well as accuracy. © 2018 IEEE.

Interest for studying cosmic neutrinos using deep-sea detectors has increased after the discovery of a diffuse flux of cosmic neutrinos by the IceCube collaboration and the possibility of wider multi-messenger studies with the observations of gravitational waves. The ANTARES detector was the first neutrino telescope in seawater, operating successfully in the Mediterranean Sea for more than a decade and a half. All challenges related to the operation in the deep sea were accurately addressed by the collaboration. Deployment and connection operations became smoother over time;data taking and constant re-calibration of the detector due to the variable environmental conditions were fully automated. A wealth of results on the subject of astroparticle physics, particle physics and multi-messenger astronomy have been obtained, despite the relative modest size of the detector, paving the way to a new generation of larger undersea detectors. This review summarizes the efforts by the ANTARES collaboration that made the possibility to operate neutrino telescopes in seawater a reality and the results obtained in this endeavor. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Statistical combinations of searches for charginos and neutralinos using various decay channels are performed using 139 fb−1 of pp collision data at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Searches targeting pure-wino chargino pair production, pure-wino chargino-neutralino production, or Higgsino production decaying via standard model W, Z, or h bosons are combined to extend the mass reach to the produced supersymmetric particles by 30–100 GeV. The depth of the sensitivity of the original searches is also improved by the combinations, lowering the 95% C.L. cross-section upper limits by 15%–40%.

A search for long-lived particles (LLPs) using 140 fb−1 of pp collision data with s=13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC is presented. The search targets LLPs with masses between 5 and 55 GeV that decay hadronically in the ATLAS inner detector. Benchmark models with LLP pair production from exotic decays of the Higgs boson and models featuring long-lived axionlike particles (ALPs) are considered. No significant excess above the expected background is observed. Upper limits are placed on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to pairs of LLPs, the cross section for ALPs produced in association with a vector boson, and, for the first time, on the branching ratio of the top quark to an ALP and a u/c quark.

The associated production of Higgs and W bosons via vector-boson fusion is highly sensitive to the relative sign of the Higgs boson couplings to W and Z bosons. In this Letter, two searches for this process are presented, using 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The first search targets scenarios with opposite-sign couplings of the W and Z bosons to the Higgs boson, while the second targets standard model-like scenarios with same-sign couplings. Both analyses consider Higgs boson decays into a pair of b quarks and W boson decays with an electron or muon. The data exclude the opposite-sign coupling hypothesis with a significance beyond 5σ, and the observed (expected) upper limit set on the cross section for vector-boson fusion WH production is 9.0 (8.7) times the standard model value at 95% confidence level.

Angular correlations between heavy quarks provide a unique probe of the quark-gluon plasma created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Results are presented of a measurement of the azimuthal angle correlations between muons originating from semileptonic decays of heavy quarks produced in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb and pp collisions at the LHC. The muons are measured with transverse momenta and pseudorapidities satisfying pTμ>4 GeV and |ημ|<2.4, respectively. The distributions of azimuthal angle separation Δϕ for muon pairs having pseudorapidity separation |Δη|>0.8, are measured in different Pb+Pb centrality intervals and compared to the same distribution measured in pp collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. Results are presented separately for muon pairs with opposite-sign charges, same-sign charges, and all pairs. A clear peak is observed in all Δϕ distributions at Δϕ∼π, consistent with the parent heavy-quark pairs being produced via hard-scattering processes. The widths of that peak, characterized using Cauchy-Lorentz fits to the Δϕ distributions, are found to not vary significantly as a function of Pb+Pb collision centrality and are similar for pp and Pb+Pb collisions. This observation will provide important constraints on theoretical descriptions of heavy-quark interactions with the quark-gluon plasma.

This Letter presents results from a combination of searches for Higgs boson pair production using 126–140 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector. At 95% confidence level (CL), the upper limit on the production rate is 2.9 times the standard model (SM) prediction, with an expected limit of 2.4 assuming no Higgs boson pair production. Constraints on the Higgs boson self-coupling modifier κλ=λHHH/λHHHSM, and the quartic HHVV coupling modifier κ2V=gHHVV/gHHVVSM, are derived individually, fixing the other parameter to its SM value. The observed 95% CL intervals are −1.2<κλ<7.2 and 0.6<κ2V<1.5, respectively, while the expected intervals are −1.6<κλ<7.2 and 0.4<κ2V<1.6 in the SM case. Constraints obtained for several interaction parameters within Higgs effective field theory are the strongest to date, offering insights into potential deviations from SM predictions.
