The paper presents a search for supersymmetric particles produced in proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV and decaying into final states with missing transverse momentum and jets originating from charm quarks. The data were taken with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN from 2015 to 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. No significant excess of events over the expected Standard Model background expectation is observed in optimized signal regions, and limits are set on the production cross-sections of the supersymmetric particles. Pair production of charm squarks or top squarks, each decaying into a charm quark and the lightest supersymmetric particle $$ {\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ , is excluded at 95% confidence level for squarks with masses up to 900 GeV for scenarios where the mass of $$ {\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ is below 50 GeV. Additionally, the production of leptoquarks with masses up to 900 GeV is excluded for the scenario where up-type leptoquarks decay into a charm quark and a neutrino. Model-independent limits on cross-sections and event yields for processes beyond the Standard Model are also reported.

A search for pair production of vector-like leptons coupling to first- and second-generation Standard Model leptons is presented. The search is based on a dataset of proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. Events are categorised depending on the flavour and multiplicity of leptons (electrons or muons), as well as on the scores of a deep neural network targeting particular signal topologies according to the decay modes of the vector-like leptons. In each of the signal regions, the scalar sum of the transverse momentum of the leptons and the missing transverse momentum is analysed. The main background processes are estimated using dedicated control regions in a simultaneous fit with the signal regions to data. No significant excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed and limits are set at 95% confidence level on the production cross-sections of vector-like electrons and muons as a function of the vector-like lepton mass, separately for SU(2) doublet and singlet scenarios. The resulting mass lower limits are 1220 GeV (1270 GeV) and 320 GeV (400 GeV) for vector-like electrons (muons) in the doublet and singlet scenarios, respectively.

We present the Zero Resource Speech Challenge 2019, which proposes to build a speech synthesizer without any text or phonetic labels: hence, TTS without T (text-to-speech without text). We provide raw audio for a target voice in an unknown language (the Voice dataset), but no alignment, text or labels. Participants must discover subword units in an unsupervised way (using the Unit Discovery dataset) and align them to the voice recordings in a way that works best for the purpose of synthesizing novel utterances from novel speakers, similar to the target speaker's voice. We describe the metrics used for evaluation, a baseline system consisting of unsupervised subword unit discovery plus a standard TTS system, and a topline TTS using gold phoneme transcriptions. The paper presents a summary of the 2020 Sclera Segmentation Benchmarking Competition (SSBC), the 7th in the series of group benchmarking efforts centred around the problem of sclera segmentation. Different from previous editions, the goal of SSBC 2020 was to evaluate the performance of sclera-segmentation models on images captured with mobile devices. The competition was used as a platform to assess the sensitivity of existing models to i) differences in mobile devices used for image capture and ii) changes in the ambient acquisition conditions. 26 research groups registered for SSBC 2020, out of which 13 took part in the final round and submitted a total of 16 segmentation models for scoring. These included a wide variety of deep-learning solutions as well as one approach based on standard image processing techniques. Experiments were conducted with three recent datasets. Most of the segmentation models achieved relatively consistent performance across images captured with different mobile devices (with slight differences across devices), but struggled most with low-quality images captured in challenging ambient conditions, i.e., in an indoor environment and with poor lighting.

This contribution investigates the application of established pansharpening algorithms for the fusion of hyperspectral images from Raman microspectroscopy and panchromatic images from conventional brightfield microscopy. Seven different methods based on multiresolution analysis and component substitution were applied and evaluated through visual assessment and quantitative quality measures at full and reduced resolution. The results indicate that, among the considered concepts, multiresolution methods are the more promising approaches for a physically and chemically meaningful fusion of the considered modalities. Here, pansharpening based on high-pass filtering led to the best results.

A measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions, Rτ/e = B(W → τν)/B(W → eν), is performed using a sample of W bosons originating from top-quark decays to final states containing τ-leptons or electrons. This measurement uses pp collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV, collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider during Run 2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The W → τντ (with τ → eνeντ) and W → eνe decays are distinguished using the differences in the impact parameter distributions and transverse momentum spectra of the electrons. The measured ratio of branching fractions Rτ/e = 0.975 ± 0.012 (stat.) ± 0.020 (syst.), is consistent with the Standard Model assumption of lepton flavour universality in W-boson decays.

KM3NeT is a research infrastructure hosting two large-volume Cherenkov neutrino detectors which are currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ARCA detector is optimised for the detection of high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical sources in the TeV-PeV energy range. Once completed, the detector will consist of 230 detection units. Here, we present a Deep Learning method using graph neural networks that is trained and applied to events gathered with 6 and 8 active detection units of KM3NeT/ARCA. Graph neural networks have been trained for classification and regression tasks, showing very promising performances in a range of different tasks like neutrino-background identification, neutrino event topology classification, energy and direction reconstruction, and also in the study of properties of muon bundles. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

A measurement is presented for the electroweak production of a W boson, a photon (γ), and two jets (j) in proton-proton collisions. The leptonic decay of the W boson is selected by requiring one identified electron or muon and large missing transverse momentum. The two jets are required to have large invariant dijet mass and large separation in pseudorapidity. The measurement is performed with the data collected by the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The cross section for the electroweak Wγjj production is 23.5−4.7+4.9 fb, whereas the total cross section for Wγjj production is 113±13 fb. Differential cross sections are also measured with the distributions unfolded to the particle level. All results are in agreement with the standard model expectations. Constraints are placed on anomalous quartic gauge couplings (aQGCs) in terms of dimension-8 effective field theory operators. These are the most stringent limits to date on the aQGCs parameters fM,2–5/Λ4 and fT,6–7/Λ4.

It has been shown that entailments based on the maximally consistent subsets (MCS) of a given set of premises can be captured by Dung-style semantics for argumentation frameworks. This paper shows that these links are much tighter and go way beyond simplified forms of reasoning with MCS. Among others, we consider different types of entailments that these kinds of reasoning induce, extend the framework for arbitrary (not necessarily maximal) consistent subsets, and incorporate non-classical logics. The introduction of declarative methods for reasoning with MCS by means of (sequent-based) argumentation frameworks provides, in particular, a better understanding of logic-based argumentation and allows to reevaluate some negative results concerning the latter. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

The first observation of the production of W±W± bosons from double parton scattering processes using same-sign electron-muon and dimuon events in proton-proton collisions is reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1 recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. Multivariate discriminants are used to distinguish the signal process from the main backgrounds. A binned maximum likelihood fit is performed to extract the signal cross section. The measured cross section for production of same-sign W bosons decaying leptonically is 80.7±11.2(stat) −8.6+9.5(syst)±12.1(model) fb, whereas the measured fiducial cross section is 6.28±0.81(stat)±0.69(syst)±0.37(model) fb. The observed significance of the signal is 6.2 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis.
