Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder and an accurate forecast of seizures would help to overcome the patient's uncertainty and helplessness. In this contribution, we present and discuss a novel methodology for the classification of intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) for seizure prediction. Contrary to previous approaches, we categorically refrain from an extraction of hand-crafted features and use a convolutional neural network (CNN) topology instead for both the determination of suitable signal characteristics and the binary classification of preictal and interictal segments. Three different models have been evaluated on public datasets with long-term recordings from four dogs and three patients. Overall, our findings demonstrate the general applicability. The cubic-kilometre neutrino telescope, consisting of large-scale 3D-arrays of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) currently under construction on the Mediterranean seabed, relies on accurate calibration procedures in order to answer its science goals. These proceedings present an overview of a novel gain calibration method based on highly compressed PMT hit information. In particular, it is shown that the PMT gains can be tuned to within 2% of the nominal value, based on the measured time-over-threshold. © Copyright owned by the author(s).

Towards Exploiting Social Networks for Detecting Epidemic Outbreaks

Social networks are becoming a valuable source of information for applications in many domains. In particular, many studies have highlighted the potential of social networks for early detection of epidemic outbreaks, due to their capability to transmit information faster than traditional channels, thus leading to quicker reactions of public health officials. Anyhow, the most of these studies have investigated only one or two diseases, and consequently to date there is no study in the literature trying to investigate if and how different kinds of outbreaks may lead to different temporal dynamics of the messages exchanged over social networks. Furthermore, in case of a wide variability, it is not clear if it would be possible to define a single generic solution able to detect multiple epidemic outbreaks, or if specifically tailored approaches should be implemented for each disease. To get an insight into these open points, we collected a massive dataset, containing more than one hundred million Twitter messages from different countries, looking for those relevant for an early outbreak detection of multiple disease. The collected results highlight that there is a significant variability in the temporal patterns of Twitter messages among different diseases. In this paper, we report on the main findings of this analysis, and we propose a set of steps to exploit social networks for early epidemic outbreaks, including a proper document model for the outbreaks, a Graphical User Interface for the public health officials, and the identification of suitable sources of information useful as ground truth for the assessment of outbreak detection algorithms. © 2017, Global institute of Flexible Systems Management.

A search is made for potential ccc¯c¯ tetraquarks decaying into a pair of charmonium states in the four muon final state using proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1 recorded by the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Two decay channels, J/ψ+J/ψ→4μ and J/ψ+ψ(2S)→4μ, are studied. Backgrounds are estimated based on a hybrid approach involving Monte Carlo simulations and data-driven methods. Statistically significant excesses with respect to backgrounds dominated by the single parton scattering are seen in the di-J/ψ channel consistent with a narrow resonance at 6.9 GeV and a broader structure at lower mass. A statistically significant excess is also seen in the J/ψ+ψ(2S) channel. The fitted masses and decay widths of the structures are reported.

A key open question in the study of multiparticle production in high-energy pp collisions is the relationship between the “ridge”—i.e., the observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities—and hard or semihard scattering processes. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. To address this question, two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at s=13 TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8 pb−1, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, v2, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

Measurements of the suppression and correlations of dijets is performed using 3µb−1 of Xe+Xe data at sNN=5.44 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Dijets with jets reconstructed using the R=0.4 anti-kt algorithm are measured differentially in jet pT over the range of 32 to 398 GeV and the centrality of the collisions. Significant dijet momentum imbalance is found in the most central Xe+Xe collisions, which decreases in more peripheral collisions. Results from the measurement of per-pair normalized and absolutely normalized dijet pT balance are compared with previous Pb+Pb measurements at sNN=5.02 TeV. The differences between the dijet suppression in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb are further quantified by the ratio of pair nuclear-modification factors. The results are found to be consistent with those measured in Pb+Pb data when compared in classes of the same event activity and when taking into account the difference between the center-of-mass energies of the initial parton scattering process in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb collisions. These results should provide input for a better understanding of the role of energy density, system size, path length, and fluctuations in the parton energy loss.

This Letter presents the first measurements of the groomed jet radius R_g and the jet girth g in events with an isolated photon recoiling against a jet in lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at the LHC at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The observables R_g and g provide a quantitative measure of how narrow or broad a jet is. The analysis uses PbPb and pp data samples with integrated luminosities of 1.7 nb⁻¹ and 301 pb⁻¹, respectively, collected with the CMS experiment in 2018 and 2017. Events are required to have a photon with transverse momentum p_T^γ>100 GeV and at least one jet back-to-back in azimuth with respect to the photon and with transverse momentum p_T^jet such that p_T^jet/p_T^γ>0.4. The measured R_g and g distributions are unfolded to the particle level, which facilitates the comparison between the PbPb and pp results and with theoretical predictions. It is found that jets with p_T^jet/p_T^γ>0.8, i.e., those that closely balance the photon p_T^γ, are narrower in PbPb than in pp collisions. Relaxing the selection to include jets with p_T^jet/p_T^γ>0.4 reduces the narrowing of the angular structure of jets in PbPb relative to the pp reference. This shows that selection bias effects associated with jet energy loss play an important role in the interpretation of jet substructure measurements. © 2024 CERN for the benefit of the CMS Collaboration

A search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into a top quark and a bottom quark is presented. The data analysed correspond to 139 fb-1of proton-proton collisions at √ s=13 TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The production of a heavy charged Higgs boson in association with a top quark and a bottom quark, p p → tbH+→ tbtb, is explored in the H+mass range from 200 to 2000 GeV using final states with jets and one electron or muon. Events are categorised according to the multiplicity of jets and b-tagged jets, and multivariate analysis techniques are used to discriminate between signal and background events. No significant excess above the background-only hypothesis is observed and exclusion limits are derived for the production cross-section times branching ratio of a charged Higgs boson as a function of its mass;they range from 3.6 pb at 200 GeV to 0.036 pb at 2000 GeV at 95% confidence level. A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H→ZZ*→4ℓ and H→γγ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, performed at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)=125.11±0.11 GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09% precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

A search for the direct production of a pair of τ sleptons, the supersymmetric partners of τ leptons, is presented. Each τ slepton is assumed to decay to a τ lepton and the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), which is assumed to be stable and to not interact in the detector, leading to an imbalance in the total reconstructed transverse momentum. The search is carried out in events identified as containing two τ leptons, each decaying to one or more hadrons and a neutrino, and significant transverse momentum imbalance. In addition to scenarios in which the τ sleptons decay promptly, the search also addresses scenarios in which the τ sleptons have sufficiently long lifetimes to give rise to nonprompt τ leptons. The data were collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC with the CMS detector in 2016–2018, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. No significant excess is seen with respect to standard model expectations. Upper limits on cross sections for the pair production of τ sleptons are obtained in the framework of simplified models. In a scenario in which the τ sleptons are superpartners of left-handed τ leptons, and each undergoes a prompt decay to a τ lepton and a nearly massless LSP, τ slepton masses between 115 and 340 GeV are excluded. In a scenario in which the lifetime of the τ sleptons corresponds to cτ0=0.1 mm, where τ0 represents the mean proper lifetime of the τ slepton, masses between 150 and 220 GeV are excluded.
