We study the ability of Inter-Vehicle communication (IVC) solutions to handle real-time requirements in safety scenarios using beaconing as a communication primitive. One of the envisioned safety applications is intersection assistance. The objective of such applications is to either warn the driver or even to act autonomously if other approaching vehicles endanger the vehicle. Fairness, combined with aggressive channel access for low-latency safety messages, has been one of the main research line according to which state of the art congestion control mechanisms have been developed. We show that these solutions are not able to sufficiently support intersection assistance applications. Specifically, we show that current approaches fail exactly due to their fairness postulation. We propose a new situation-aware solution to this fairness dilemma by allowing temporary exceptions for vehicles in dangerous situations. We show the applicability for two state of the art congestion control mechanisms, namely ETSI Transmit Rate Control (TRC) and Dynamic Beaconing (DynB). Our investigation also reveals important research objectives for future IVC protocols, namely how much reactivity and situation-awareness is needed in the highly dynamic environment of vehicular networks. © 2014 IEEE.

Managing bandwidth sharing at bottlenecks is a challenge as old as packet switched networks. When equal senders compete for bandwidth of a bottleneck, it is desirable not only to enforce an instantaneous sharing of the scarce resource but also to prevent permanently active customers from suppressing less active customers. Moreover, it is desirable to incentivize shifting load to non-congested networks or times. Today there is no cheap, efficient and effective mechanism available to achieve these goals. It has been argued that policing based on congestion as perceived by the transport layer can achieve these goals. In this paper we present the concept of Congestion Policing Queues (CPQ), based on a very lightweight dequeuing and scheduling because all customers share one queue. CPQs can police congestion if deployed at bottlenecks relevant to the customers' traffic. We developed three base policers that differ in the level of integration with the Active Queue Management (AQM) of the shared queue. By simulations of three scenarios we evaluate the robustness of the achieved resource sharing and performance in partial deployments for multi-bottleneck situations.

Platooning, the idea of cars autonomously following their leaders to form a road train, has huge potentials to improve traffic flow efficiency and, most importantly, road traffic safety. Wireless communication is a fundamental building block - it is needed to manage and to maintain the platoons. To keep the system stable, strict constraints in terms of update frequency and reliability must be met. We developed communication strategies by explicitly taking into account the requirements of the controller, exploiting synchronized communication slots as well as transmit power adaptation. The proposed approaches are compared to two state of the art adaptive beaconing protocols that have been designed for generic message dissemination. Our simulation models have been parametrized and validated by means of real-world experiments. We clearly show how taking into account specific requirements can be extremely beneficial even in very crowded freeway scenarios. © 2014 IEEE.

In cellular networks, the Shortest Remaining Processing Time first (SRPT) principle, which is known to be optimal for sharing jobs on a single-server system, can deliver significant advantages over conventional scheduling algorithms. Transmissions are finished earlier, which improves user experience and enables operators to allow more users in their networks. However, this comes at the cost of reduced cell throughput and a penalty for large objects in peak traffic situations. We therefore propose an extension to SRPT that combines it with opportunistic scheduling and allows to tradeoff the advantages of both sides. We evaluate and compare the performance of SRPT and conventional schedulers by simulation with a realistic traffic scenario. An important metric is the transmission duration of application layer objects as it is central for the users' Quality of Experience (QoE). The results show that the proposed scheduler provides the superior QoE of SRPT for short, interactive transmissions while keeping the rate reduction for larger traffic objects at an acceptable level.

The fuzzy logic theory has been proven to be effective in dealing with various nonlinear systems and has a great success in industry applications. Among different kinds of models for fuzzy systems, the so-called Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model has been quite popular due to its convenient and simple dynamic structure as well as its capability of approximating any smooth nonlinear function to any specified accuracy within any compact set. In terms of such a model, the performance analysis and the design of controllers and filters play important roles in the research of fuzzy systems. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the T-S fuzzy control and filtering problems with various network-induced phenomena. The network-induced phenomena under consideration mainly include communication delays, packet dropouts, signal quantization, and randomly occurring uncertainties (ROUs). With such network-induced phenomena, the developments on T-S fuzzy control and filtering issues are reviewed in detail. In addition, some latest results on this topic are highlighted. In the end, conclusions are drawn and some possible future research directions are pointed out. © 2015 Sunjie Zhang et al.

Data Center TCP (DCTCP) is an Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN)-based congestion control and Active Queue Management (AQM) scheme. It has provoked widespread interest because it keeps queuing delay and delay variance very low. There is no theoretical reason why Data Center TCP (DCTCP) cannot scale to the size of the Internet, resulting in greater absolute reductions in delay than achieved in data centres. However, no way has yet been found for DCTCP traffic to coexist with conventional TCP without being starved. This paper introduces a way to deploy DCTCP incrementally on the public Internet that could solve this coexistence problem. Using the widely deployed Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED) scheme, we configure a second AQM that is applied solely to ECN-capable packets. We focus solely on long-running flows, not because they are realistic, but as the critical gating test for whether starvation can occur. For the non-ECN traffic we use TCP New Reno; again not to seek realism, but to check for safety against the prevalent reference. We report the promising result that, not only does the proposed AQM always avoid starvation, but it can also achieve equal rates. We even derived how the sharing ratio between DCTCP and conventional TCP traffic depends on the various AQM parameters. The next step beyond this gating test will be to quantify the reduction in queuing delay and variance in dynamic scenarios. This will support the standardization process needed to define new ECN semantics for DCTCP deployment that the authors have started at the IETF.

An implementation of Self-Reproducing Loops (SRL) on Asynchronous Cellular Automata (ACA) is proposed in this paper. The transition rules in this ACA are called Aggregate Neighborhood Rules, in which the output domain of the rules are the same as input. In the proposed SRL, the head of the loop can move backward and forward because of asynchronous nature in ACA, thus making it possible to avoid collisions of loop heads.

In this article a portable and wearable wireless system to measure the respiratory rate and signal using embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based optical sensor into textile (nylon) is realized. The measured data is analyzed and compared with the output data of a commercial wired piezoelectric crystal film respiratory belt from Grass Technology (FBGT-200) as a reference for the sake of validation. The results showed that the resultant average respiratory rate and the signal correlation coefficients between the FBGT-200 and the reference respiratory belt was 0.99 and 0.72 respectively. A variation in correlation coefficient for respiratory signal is found which is related to the variation in volunteer respiration pattern. The developed fiber optic based monitoring system has been tested on ten volunteers of different chest circumferences.

The embedding of logic circuits into the cellular spaces is an essential approach for efficient computing on asynchronous cellular automata (ACAs), which usually depends critically on the design of signals. Such signals are required to propagate definitely in predefined directions, and cross other signals coming from orthogonal directions without blockage. Adachi et al. (2004) constructed signals in an ACA with von Neumann neighborhood, which takes 5 states per cell and 24 transition rules. Unfortunately, two signals colliding with each other at the crossing point of paths may occasionally cause deadlock, due to the lack of adequate rules to cope with such a situation. This paper presents a novel 5-state ACA with von Neumann neighborhood that uses 64 rules, which allows reliable propagation and crossing of signals at all times.
