In this paper, the performance model for a lossless OBS edge node is built with respect to the queueing performance of the transmission buffer. In contrast to the shaping effect of the burst assembly in the bufferless edge node, in a lossless edge node the "burstifying" effect of the assembly is more dominant and leads to a worse queueing performance in the transmission buffer. We analyze the traffic characteristic by means of the variance process and identify that there exists a negative correlation structure in the assembled burst traffic in the small time scale, which resembles that of a CBR flow. Through the analysis of the relevant time scale, it is found that this small time scale traffic behavior dominates the queueing performance in most cases and the performance of burst transmission buffer can be well estimated by a corresponding ND/D/1 model. In the case of the self-similar input traffic with large peakness and at a high system load, the tail behavior of large queue length becomes much worse and can be estimated by a fractional Brownian motion (FBM) model considering the large time scale traffic behavior. Our performance model provides a simple but accurate analytical method for the performance evaluation and system design.

The introduction of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) in conventional WCDMA systems according to the UMTS standard will enable packet-switched broadband services with data rates of several Mbps. Until the deployment of High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA), the uplink traffic will be handled by conventional Dedicated Channels (DCHs). While the HSDPA downlink shared channel (HS-DSCH) is accompanied by fast feedback signaling channels, all feedback signals related to the uplink DCH, such as ARQ status messages, have to be transmitted via the downlink HS-DSCH. In this paper, we argue that the downlink HS-DSCH is subject to unpredictable delays, causing malicious interference with uplink protocol mechanisms, such as the ARQ. Eventually, we show how this degrades the overall end-to-end performance, and we propose and evaluate mechanisms how to alleviate this problem. © 2006 IEEE.

Protecting location information of mobile users in location based services (LBS) is a very important but quite difficult and still largely unsolved problem. Location information has to be protected against unauthorized access not only from users but also from service providers storing and processing the location data, without restricting the functionality of the system. This paper discusses why existing privacy enhancing techniques are insufficient to solve this problem and proposes a new approach basing on coordinate transformations. It shows how location information can be rendered illegible in such a way that it is still possible to perform processing operations required by LBS

The method of emulation is an attractive approach in order to evaluate the performance of communication networks. Compared to simulation, it is especially beneficial when real-world components, e.g., applications or protocols should be included. In this paper, we present the new emulation environment IKREmuLib, which allows for a seamless integration of both the emulation and the simulation domain by exploiting the same system model implementation. By doing so, we avoid the disadvantages of either approach while combining the benefits of both.

Dynamic Layer 1 Virtual Private Network (L1VPN) services are an emerging and important network service in future transport networks. While on IP layer VPN concepts are already in use, the realization in lower layers is presently a hot topic in research and standardization. For performance evaluation of a network or network dimensioning a general but concise L1VPN modeling approach is needed. However such a model, which integrates population models as well as different VPN characteristics, is currently not available. In this paper, we outline the fundamental characteristics of VPN traffic in comparison to normal point-to-point traffic and present a generic framework for multi-point demand modeling. Our framework is open for adaptation to different service scenarios defined by population models, capacitated connections and virtual topologies. In order to show the behavior of the framework, we apply it to one selected VPN scenario and examine in two case studies the impact on different metrics important for network dimensioning.

Packet classification is one of the major tasks of packet processing systems at the edge of high-speed transport networks. As existing protocols are evolving and new protocols are constantly being developed, today's network systems have to be highly flexible and adaptable to changing requirements. In this paper we present a scalable architecture for a packet classification system for high speed transport network interfaces. This architecture allows the introduction of new protocols and the update of classification rules during operation by using the concept of microprogramming. In the paper we will give a detailed description of the classifiers microprogrammed architecture. Further, the topics performance data concerning the throughput of the classification unit, realization complexity and resource requirements on the chip are also addressed.

Multipoint Ethernet services and virtual private LAN services are an active field of both research and standardization today. A high degree of automation and reduced customer-provider interaction, together with efficient resource management schemes and a guaranteed QoS level are key requirements for these new services, which constitute challenging problems to service providers. Especially the integration into future (G)MPLS networks is an urging need to many operators. In this article, we evaluate VPN resource management schemes under realistic constraints with respect to their applicability to present service developments for (G)MPLS networks. Based on this evaluation, we propose and discuss a new dynamic hose model-based capacity management scheme, which explicitly targets at keeping signaling load and measurement complexity low. Finally, we prove the applicability of the novel approach by means of simulation in a representative case study

Context awareness is an essential cornerstone in future pervasive computing systems. It has the potential to greatly reduce the user attention and interaction bottlenecks, to give humans the impression that services fade into the background, and to support intelligent personalization features. Nevertheless, in order to create such an environment, a growing amount of personal information has to be provided to the system, either manually or automatically. Hence the digital trace and representation users have in the system is getting dangerously detailed, thus stressing the need for privacy protection. DAIDALOS (Satyanarayanan, 2001) is a European research project in the area of 3G and beyond, which aims to combine heterogeneous networks in a transparent and seamless way, and develop on top of this a pervasive environment for applications and end-users. This paper describes the main models and mechanisms that have been established to provide federated context-aware services and protect the privacy of their users
