In this paper, we present a detailed performance analysis of the MAC protocol of the DBORN metro network architecture. We introduce an exact analytical model for the slotted mode and models for the unslotted mode which yield good upper and lower bounds. Also, we introduce a new moment analysis approach to derive the mean waiting time of preemptive repeat identical priority systems. Then, we validate the analytical model by simulation and assess important architectural options regarding delay and admissible network load. In order to consider realistic burst traffic characteristics, we extend the evaluation towards general arrival processes and finally employ a burst assembly module with self-similar IP traffic.

When simulating radio access networks (RANs) on the network level, the representation of the physical layer is on the MAC-layer can have a significant impact on the system performance. This paper focuses on the distribution of frame errors in WCDMA systems. We first study the statistical properties of the frame-error distribution as obtained by physical layer simulation. We then compare the statistical properties to those obtained from statistical channel models for both cases with activated and deactivated closed-loop power control. In this paper analytical and simulative study of optical packet/burst assembly in the presence of self similar input traffic is presented. The influence of the main assembly parameters is studied by simulation for timer and size-based aggregation strategies. Analytical model is proposed to represent the average traffic on optical link with the aim to evaluate system performance. Comparisons with simulation prove that the model is well suited to catch the loss system behaviour.
