Networks of Wireless Inertial Measurement Units (WIMUs) allow for the real time capture of orientation data from multiple devices. Combining data from WIMUs with a rigid body model allows estimation of subject posture. However, posture information is not sufficient for full-body motion capture, the position of the subject in space must also be tracked. In this paper we examine the problem of relative position tracking;provide a demonstration of a novel location estimation algorithm, based on probabilistic ground contact detection;and discuss the use of aiding technologies. © 2010 ACM.

In this paper we present a method for a graph-based retrieval and its application in architectural floor plan retrieval. The proposed method is an extension of a well-known method for subgraph matching. This extension significantly reduces the storage amount and indexing time for graphs where the nodes are labeled with a rather small amount of different classes. In order to reduce the number of possible permutations, a weight function for labeled graphs is introduced and a well-founded total order is defined on the weights of the labels. Inversions which violate the order are not allowed. A computational complexity analysis of the new preprocessing is given and its completeness is proven. Furthermore, in a number of practical experiments with randomly generated graphs the improvement of the new approach is shown. In experiments performed on random sample graphs, the number of permutations has been decreased to a fraction of 10-18 in average compared to the original approach by Messmer. This makes indexing of larger graphs feasible, allowing for fast detection of subgraphs. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Resource sharing can be applied during data-path synthesis of Instruction-Set Extensions (ISEs) in order to obtain flexibility and area efficiency. The design space of resource sharing solutions can be explored in order to find the trade-offs between area and instruction latency that suit the design goals. On the other hand, area is a proven global constraint that should be considered in the ISE selection process, since maximizing speedup as a unique goal assumes the availability of unlimited resources. Thus, a selection process should be aware of the area requirements of a subset of ISE candidates. However, when resource sharing is used for ISE data-path synthesis, the area and profitability of the subset cannot be known until resource sharing is attempted. This paper proposes a hardware/software partitioning framework in which the selection of ISEs interacts with the resource sharing process in order drive the exploration of the selection design space towards implementation alternatives that are likely to increase the utilization of the given area resources. On the benchmarks analyzed in this paper, our techniques find solutions that under a fixed area constraint, achieve speedups from 8% to 238% higher than previous selection techniques. Furthermore, unlike previous approaches, the proposed framework allows the exploration, at the selection level, of the design space of trade-offs between speedup and area that are available to the designer. ©2010 IEEE.

Presents simulations of an algorithm for estimating linear acceleration of wireless inertial measurement units based on body model constraints. The behaviour of the proposed algorithm is compared to existing algorithms based on motion capture data from the Carnegie Mellon University motion capture corpus. The new algorithm is demonstrated to be capable of accurately estimating linear accelerations for walking and running motions. The use of linear acceleration estimation is demonstrated to improve the accuracy of inertial motion capture. © 2010 IEEE.

For memory constrained embedded systems code size is at least as important as performance. One way of increasing code density is to exploit compact instruction formats, e.g. ARM Thumb, where the processor either operates in standard or compact instruction mode. The ARCompact ISA considered in this paper is different in that it allows freeform mixing of 16- and 32-bit instructions without a mode switch. Compact 16-bit instructions can be used anywhere in the code given that additional register constraints are satisfied. In this paper we present an integrated instruction selection and register allocation methodology and develop two approaches for mixed-mode code generation: a simple opportunistic scheme and a more advanced feedback-guided instruction selection scheme. We have implemented a code generator targeting the ARCompact ISA and evaluated its effectiveness against the ARC750D embedded processor and the EEMBC benchmark suite. On average, we achieve a code size reduction of 16.7% across all benchmarks whilst at the same time improving performance by on average 17.7%. © 2010 ACM.

Functional instruction set simulators perform instruction-accurate simulation of benchmarks at high instruction rates. Unlike their slower, but cycle-accurate counterparts however, they are not capable of providing cycle counts due to the higher level of hardware abstraction. In this paper we present a novel approach to performance prediction based on statistical machine learning utilizing a hybrid instruction- and cycle-accurate simulator. We introduce the concept of continuous machine learning to simulation whereby new training data points are acquired on demand and used for on-the-fly updates of the performance model. Furthermore, we show how statistical regression can be adapted to reduce the cost of these updates during a performance-critical simulation. For a state-of-the-art simulator modeling the ARC 750D embedded processor we demonstrate that our approach is highly accurate, with average error

The use of local processing to reduce data transmission rates, and thereby power and bandwidth requirements, is common in wireless sensor networks. Achieving the minimum possible data rate, however, is not always the optimal choice when the effects of packet loss on overall measurement error are considered. This paper presents a case study from the area of wireless inertial motion capture, in which the best distributed processing strategy is shown to be that which minimises inter-packet data dependency, rather than overall data rate. Drawing on this result and further analysis, we identify questions that should be raised during the design process in order to understand the effects of packet loss on distributed signal processing tasks, decide whether the errors are acceptable for an application, and choose appropriate techniques to mitigate them if necessary.

Advances in the miniaturisation of inertial sensors have allowed the design of compact wireless inertial orientation trackers. Such devices require data fusion algorithms to process sensor data into estimated orientations. This paper examines the problem of inertial sensor data fusion and compares two alternative methods for orientation estimation: complementary filtering and Kalman filtering. Experiments are presented to assess the performance and accuracy of the resulting filters. The complementary filter structure is demonstrated to require up to nine times less execution time, while maintaining better accuracy across different movement scenarios, than the Kalman filter structure.
