Modular process plants enable the process industry to adapt to volatile and fluctuating markets. The preferred process technology concept for these market scenarios is realized through combining pre-engineered process equipment assemblies (PEA) from different manufacturers with standardized interfaces. While the flexibility gain for this type of plants is high, the design of the safety systems of these modular plants in terms of exchangeability and compatibility is challenging. One solution could be the development of a safety-interface for PEAs to create flexible and scalable safety systems. The principles of modular basic process control are analyzed and requirements with respect to safety design are discussed. The authors provide a differentiation of the intramodular safety concept of a single PEA from the intermodular safety concept of a complete modular plant. A concept for safe and modular interaction of PEAs in a modular plant is developed and additionally validated on a basic demonstrator. Finally, from these findings, standardization requirements are provided and aspects for further research are pointed out.

For robust control and iterative optimization of industrial batch processes with polytopic uncertainties, this paper proposes a robust output feedback based iterative learning control (ILC) design in terms of finite frequency range stability specifications. Robust stability conditions for the closed-loop ILC system along both time and batch directions are first established based on the generalized Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov lemma and linear repetitive system theory. To facilitate the ILC controller design with respect to process uncertainties described in a polytopic form, extended sufficient conditions for the system stability are then derived in terms of matrix inequalities. Correspondingly, a two-stage heuristic approach is developed to iteratively compute feasible ILC controller gains for implementation. An illustrative example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control design.

Delay and packet-drop tolerant multi-stage distributed average tracking in mean square

This paper studies the distributed average tracking problem pertaining to a discrete-time linear time-invariant multi-agent network, which is subject to, concurrently, input delays, random packet-drops, and reference noise. The problem amounts to an integrated design of delay and packet-drop tolerant algorithm and determining the ultimate upper bound of the tracking error between agents' states and the average of the reference signals. The investigation is driven by the goal of devising a practically more attainable average tracking algorithm, thereby extending the existing work in the literature which largely ignored the aforementioned uncertainties. For this purpose, a blend of techniques from Kalman filtering, multi-stage consensus filtering, and predictive control is employed, which gives rise to a simple yet comepelling distributed average tracking algorithm that is robust to initialization error and allows the trade-off between communication/computation cost and stationary-state tracking error. Due to the inherent coupling among different control components, convergence analysis is significantly challenging. Nevertheless, it is revealed that the allowable values of the algorithm parameters rely upon the maximal degree of an expected network, while the convergence speed depends upon the second smallest eigenvalue of the same network's topology. Off-Policy Q-Learning for Anti-Interference control of Multi-Player Systems ⁎

This paper develops a novel off-policy game Q-learning algorithm to solve the anti-interference control problem for discrete-time linear multi-player systems using only data without requiring system matrices to be known. The primary contribution of this paper lies in that the Q-learning strategy employed in the proposed algorithm is implemented in an off-policy policy iteration approach other than on-policy learning due to the well-known advantages of off-policy Q-learning over on-policy Q-learning. All of the players work hard together for the goal of minimizing their common performance index meanwhile defeating the disturbance that tries to maximize the specific performance index, and finally they reach the Nash equilibrium of the game resulting in satisfying disturbance attenuation condition. In order to find the solution to the Nash equilibrium, the anti-interference control problem is first transformed into an optimal control problem. Then an off-policy Q-learning algorithm is proposed in the framework of typical adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) and game architecture, such that control policies of all players can be learned using only measured data. Comparative simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A Primal-Dual SGD Algorithm for Distributed Nonconvex Optimization

The distributed nonconvex optimization problem of minimizing a global cost function formed by a sum of n local cost functions by using local information exchange is considered. This problem is an important component of many machine learning techniques with data parallelism, such as deep learning and federated learning. We propose a distributed primal–dual stochastic gradient descent (SGD) algorithm, suitable for arbitrarily connected communication networks and any smooth (possibly nonconvex) cost functions. We show that the proposed algorithm achieves the linear speedup convergence rate O(1/√nT) for general nonconvex cost functions and the linear speedup convergence rate O(1/(nT)) when the global cost function satisfies the Polyak–Lojasiewicz (P–L) condition, where T is the total number of iterations. We also show that the output of the proposed algorithm with constant parameters linearly converges to a neighborhood of a global optimum. We demonstrate through numerical experiments the efficiency of our algorithm in comparison with the baseline centralized SGD and recently proposed distributed SGD algorithms. This paper deals with the control of simple process models with state-delays. A pre-compensator is used to cancel the delay. Due to the cancellation of some terms, the process as well as its undelayed part should be stable. Although the approach is general, in order to simplify the notation, second order systems are considered to describe the procedure. The proposed methodology is applied to compensate the delay in a recycled reactor as well as to control a pure state-delayed academic example. © 2018

Sorting of the components on the basis of their features is an important process extensively required in industries mainly on assembly and production lines. Such systems are of significant importance in selective assembly processes where the part to be delivered is decided on the basis of real time requirements. This not only does away with the requirement of manual labor, but also addresses the issue of mistakes arising from fatigue and negligence of human worker, plus there is definitely an increase in productivity by the use of such systems as they offer the advantage of complete automation of the process. The present system has been developed with a view to provide an effective, simple and low cost solution to identification and sorting system applications. The system has been developed by using less costly and robust sensors and actuators such that the electronic circuitry involved is also simple and can meet the demands where flexibility of a concern because the present system can quickly be reprogrammed to meet any changed circumstance within the operating range of the system. System presently developed is based on sorting on the basis of component color. The system does not need to hit its home position each time it makes a delivery, rather it takes its present position as the reference and can make a quick move to the next delivery, saving a significant time. The system has successfully been tested and is found to give an error less than 1% in total number of trials conducted. © 2018 Newswood Limited. All rights reserved.

A novel engineering model reduction method is proposed in this paper that can be applied to a chemical reaction network (CRN) with chains of linear reactions. The reduced model is a delayed CRN with possibly different delays but with less state variables than the original model. As the first step of the model reduction, a decomposition method is also developed to transform chains with joint reactions into independent chains of linear reactions. The well known example of McKeithan's network is used as a case study to illustrate the basic concepts and the design method. © 2018

In this paper CRNs containing linear reaction chains with multiple joint complexes were considered in order to obtain an equivalent reduced order delayed CRN model with distributed time delays. For this purpose, our earlier method (Lipták and Hangos (2018)) for decomposing the chains of linear reactions with multiple joint complexes was used together with the "linear chain trick". An analytical expression for the kernel function of the distributed delay was also derived from the reaction rate coefficients of the linear reaction chains. Our approach was demonstrated using the example of the well known McKeithan’s network model of kinetic proofreading.
