A comprehensive uncertainty, baseline, and noise analysis in computing 3D points using a recent L1-based triangulation algorithm is presented. This method is shown to be not only faster and more accurate than its main competitor, linear triangulation, but also more stable under noise and baseline changes. A Monte Carlo analysis of covariance and a confidence ellipsoid analysis were performed over a large range of baselines and noise levels for different camera configurations, to compare performance between angular error-based and linear triangulation. Furthermore, the effect of baseline and noise was analyzed for true multi-view triangulation versus pair wise stereo fusion. Results on real and synthetic data show that L1 angular error-based triangulation has a positive effect on confidence ellipsoids, lowers covariance values and results in more-accurate pair wise and multi-view triangulation, for varying numbers of cameras and configurations.

Uncertain transport in unsteady flows

We study uncertainty in the dynamics of time-dependent flows by identifying barriers and enhancers to stochastic transport. This topological segmentation is closely related to the theory of Lagrangian coherent structures and is based on a recently introduced quantity, the diffusion barrier strength (DBS). The DBS is defined similar to the finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE), but incorporates diffusion during flow integration. Height ridges of the DBS indicate stochastic transport barriers and enhancers, i.e. material surfaces that are minimally or maximally diffusive. To apply these concepts to real-world data, we represent uncertainty in a flow by a stochastic differential equation that consists of a deterministic and a stochastic component modeled by a Gaussian. With this formulation we identify barriers and enhancers to stochastic transport, without performing expensive Monte Carlo simulation and with a computational complexity comparable to FTLE. In addition, we propose a complementary visualization to convey the absolute scale of uncertainties in the Lagrangian frame of reference. This enables us to study uncertainty in real-world datasets, for example due to small deviations, data reduction, or estimated from multiple ensemble runs. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. We present a novel approach for the direct computation of integral surfaces in time-dependent vector fields. As opposed to previous work, which we analyze in detail, our approach is based on a separation of integral surface computation into two stages: surface approximation and generation of a graphical representation. This allows us to overcome several limitations of existing techniques. We first describe an algorithm for surface integration that approximates a series of time lines using iterative refinement and computes a skeleton of the integral surface. In a second step, we generate a well-conditioned triangulation. Our approach allows a highly accurate treatment of very large time-varying vector fields in an efficient, streaming fashion. We examine the properties of the presented methods on several example datasets and perform a numerical study of its correctness and accuracy. Finally, we investigate some visualization aspects of integral surfaces. © 2008 IEEE.

In this work we present the ZAPP, a management framework for distributed visualization systems. The main purpose of ZAPP is to improve the user, administrator, and developer experience in dealing with distributed displays. Even a single user with no administrative knowledge can operate a ZAPP-managed display system. The goal is that practically anyone is capable of operating the display with less than two minutes of training. To achieve this we present a lightweight management framework that links and controls the render workstations, which drive the displays, but also connects to the user's very own mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets, to enable convenient control over the display. Consequently, the users never need to leave their familiar hardware and operating system environments and can use distributed displays without external help. © 2011 IADIS.

We present an interactive spherical terrain rendering system employing a hierarchical subdivision of the HEALPix coordinate system using quadtrees. Compared to other parameterizations, the scheme avoids singularities and allows for efficient fusion of mixed-resolution digital elevation models and imagery. A Level-of-Detail heuristic is used to guarantee both high performance and visual fidelity. Unified treatment of DEM and imagery data is achieved by performing the HEALPix projection within a GPU shader. The system is applied to the exploration of Mars, using both MOLA (NASA) and HRSC (German Aerospace Center) data sets.

Recent research in flow visualization is focusing on the analysis of time-dependent, but mass-less particles. However, in many application scenarios, the mass of particles and their resulting inertia - is essential in understanding fluid mechanics. This includes critical processes, such as dust particles interacting with aircraft (e.g., brownor white-out effects) and particle separation based on density variation. In this paper, we contribute a generalized description of mass-dependent particle trajectories and apply existing unsteady flow visualization methods to the mass-dependent case. This comprises the extension of common concepts, i.e., path lines, streak lines, and time lines. Furthermore, we introduce a new class of integral curves, called mass lines that effectively visualizes mass separation and captures mass-related features in unsteady flow fields that are inaccessible using traditional methods. We demonstrate the applicability of our method, using a number of real-world and artificial data sets, in which mass is a crucial parameter. In particular, we focus on the analysis of brown-out conditions, introduced by a helicopter in forward flight close to the ground. © 2013 The Author(s).

In recent years, the computational power and graphics capabilities of our computers and gaming consoles has advanced to the point that we can render photo-realistic realworld environments in real-time. This capability has been utilized to make immersive games, serious games, and simulations. While computers and consoles are affordable for the consumer, the technology used to scan environments can be too expensive or time-consuming for most developers. In this paper, we seek to find a viable low-cost alternative to these expensive technologies by analyzing the efficacy of cheap hardware (Kinect and personal cameras), computer vision algorithms (KinectFusion and structure-from-motion), and post-processing tools (MeshLab) in the context of a popular free game engine, Unity. Our results demonstrate workflows that are viable for the needs of many developers.

Feature detection and pattern matching play an important role in visualization. Originally developed for images and scalar fields, pattern matching methods become increasingly interesting for other applications, e.g., vector fields. To apply pattern matching to vector fields the basic concepts of convolution and fast Fourier transform (FFT) have to be generalized to vector fields. A formalism supporting an elegant generalization of these concepts is provided by the Clifford Algebra, originally developed for describing geometry and geometric operations. We discuss an application of the Clifford Pattern Matching (CPM). We apply CPM to images for "Clifford Color Edge Detection"(C2ED), an approach for detecting edges and other features in color images. The basic idea is to treat color value tripels as vectors and apply the pattern matching algorithm to the resulting vector field. We introduce vector-valued filters for edge detection and present results. © 2006 Gesellschaft für Informatik, Bonn.

In many cases X-ray images are the only basis for surgery planning. Nevertheless it is desirable to draw conclusions about the 3D-anatomy of the patient from such data. This work presents a method to reconstruct 3D shapes from few digital X-ray images on the basis of 3D-statistical shape models. At the core of this method lies an algorithm which optimizes a similarity measure assessing the difference between projections of the shape model and the X-ray images. Based on theoretical and experimental observations we propose to measure the distance between the silhouettes of the object in the projections. The method is tested on 23 synthetically generated X-rays from CT data sets of the geometrically as well as topologically complex shape of the pelvic bone

The visualization of networks with additional attributes attached to the network elements is one of the ongoing challenges in the information visualization domain. Such so-called multivariate networks regularly appear in various application fields, for instance, in data sets which describe friendship networks or co-authorship networks. Here, we focus on networks that are based on text documents, i.e., the network nodes represent documents and the edges show relationships between them. Those relationships can be derived from common topics or common co-authors. Attached attributes may be specific keywords (topics), keyword frequencies, etc. The analysis of such multivariate networks is challenging, because a deeper understanding of the data provided depends on effective visualization and interaction techniques that are able to bring all types of information together. In addition, automatic analysis methods should be used to support the analysis process of potentially large amounts of data. In this paper, we present a visualization approach that tackles those analysis problems. Our implementation provides a combination of new techniques that shows intra-cluster and inter-cluster relations while giving insight into the content of the cluster attributes. Hence, it facilitates the interactive exploration of the networks under consideration by showing the relationships between node clusters in context of network topology and multivariate attributes.
