The growth in size and complexity of scaling applications and the systems on which they run pose challenges in analyzing and improving their overall performance. With metrics coming from thousands or millions of processes, visualization techniques are necessary to make sense of the increasing amount of data. To aid the process of exploration and understanding, we announce the initial release of Boxfish, an extensible tool for manipulating and visualizing data pertaining to application behavior. Combining and visually presenting data and knowledge from multiple domains, such as the application's communication patterns and the hardware's network configuration and routing policies, can yield the insight necessary to discover the underlying causes of observed behavior. Boxfish allows users to query, filter and project data across these domains to create interactive, linked visualizations.

Several challenges can arise during augmented/virtual collaboration. In this paper, we identify and classify some of these challenges from a cognitive infocommunications (CogInfoCom) point of view. The starting point of our analysis is the VirCA NET application, which was built on the Virtual Collaboration Arena (VirCA) and developed at the MTA SZTAKI. First, we demonstrate how VirCA and VirCA NET belong to the CogInfoCom paradigm and how they are also related to Future Internet. To highlight our ideas in a practical use-case, we identify key features of infocommunication in a collaborative scenario for building industrial production layouts. In the collaborative scenario, factory planning is defined as a multi-stakeholder and multi-domain challenge, which distributed planning teams have to face. Based on the features of VirCA NET and the specifics of the scenario, we outline a list of challenges, some of which are already solved by the system to some extent, and some of which remain to be solved in future work. The challenges are presented in relation to the theoretical background of CogInfoCom engines and CogInfoCom channels, in order to further strengthen the link between augmented/virtual collaboration and the goals of CogInfoCom.

To take up the challenge of global distributed companies, Manufacturing Engineering has to be accomplished in a worldwide collaborative way. Design and development of production processes and their execution are nowadays spread all over the world. To ensure quality standards and to create synergies between spatially distributed entities, distance collaboration tools must be provided to allow cooperation even over large distances. The Virtual Reality (VR) is thereby offering beneficial capabilities to exchange current planning stages, identify problems and solve them cooperatively. This paper introduces a new approach for distance collaboration, which enables users to work in a joint virtual space, nearly as if they were working together in the same place. Therefore two full-immersive CAVE-like systems are interconnected using the VirCA (Virtual Collaboration Arena) platform. The paper describes the requirements of Mechanical Engineers towards distance collaboration tools and the technical challenges solved with the enhanced VirCA framework. This working prototype is one premier application in the field of VR-enhanced spatially distributed collaboration. A typical use case scenario is provided to highlight the interaction and cooperation capabilities offered by VirCA NET.

In terms of the Fuzzy Lyapunov method, this work proposes stability conditions for fuzzy logic control(FLC). Their application for chaotic systems can be approximated by the Tagagi-Sugeno(T-S) fuzzy model. The fuzzy Lyapunov function is defined as a fuzzy blending of quadratic Lyapunov functions. External forces or disturbances are not considered in the controlled systems. In the design controller procedure, a parallel distributed compensation(PDC) scheme is utilized to construct a global FLC by blending all linear local state feedback controllers. The stability criteria are found not only for fuzzy modeling but also for a real chaotic system. Furthermore, this controller design problem can be reduced to a linear matrix inequality(LMI) problem by use of the Schur Complements. Efficient interior-point algorithms are now available in Matlab toolbox to solve this type of problem.

The growing popularity of 3-D movies has led to the rapid development of numerous affordable consumer 3-D displays. In contrast, the development of technology to generate 3-D content has lagged behind considerably. In spite of significant improvements to the quality of imaging devices, the accuracy of the algorithms that generate 3-D data, and the hardware available to render such data, the algorithms available to calibrate, reconstruct, and then visualize such data remain difficult to use, extremely noise sensitive, and unreasonably slow. In this paper, we present a multi-camera system that creates a highly accurate (on the order of a centimeter), 3-D reconstruction of an environment in real-time (under 30 ms) that allows for remote interaction between users. This paper focuses on addressing the aforementioned deficiencies by describing algorithms to calibrate, reconstruct, and render objects in the system. We demonstrate the accuracy and speed of our results on a variety of benchmarks and data collected from our own system. © 2011 IEEE.

(Figure Presented) Studying transformation in a chemical system by considering its energy as a function of coordinates of the system's components provides insight and changes our understanding of this process. Currently, a lack of effective visualization techniques for high-dimensional energy functions limits chemists to plot energy with respect to one or two coordinates at a time. In some complex systems, developing a comprehensive understanding requires new visualization techniques that show relationships between all coordinates at the same time. We propose a new visualization technique that combines concepts from topological analysis, multi-dimensional scaling, and graph layout to enable the analysis of energy functions for a wide range of molecular structures. We demonstrate our technique by studying the energy function of a dimer of formic and acetic acids and a LTA zeolite structure, in which we consider diffusion of methane. © 2011 The Author(s) Journal compilation © 2011 The Eurographics Association and Blackwell Publishing Ltd. A gradient clustering algorithm, based on the nonparametric methodology of statistical kernel estimators, expanded to its complete form, enabling implementation without particular knowledge of the theoretical aspects or laborious research, is presented here. The possibilities of calculating tentative optimal parameter values, and then - based on illustrative interpretation - their potential changes, result in the proposed Complete Gradient Clustering Algorithm possessing many original and valuable, from an applicational point of view, properties. Above all the number of clusters is not arbitrarily imposed but fitted to a real data structure. It is also possible to increase the scale of the number (still avoiding arbitrary assumptions), as well as the proportion of clusters in areas of dense and sparse situation of data elements. The method is universal in character and can be applied to a wide range of practical problems, in particular from the bioinformatics, management and engineering fields. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

This WIP paper reports the status of a Windows based tool, 'Event Coding and visualization of data' (ECOVRD) that allows real time collaborative video annotation using Google App Engine (GAE) and XMPP protocol. ECOVRD facilitates classification of live or video recorded individual and team behavior. It is designed with the dual purpose of advancing behavioral (observational) research and of supporting applied uses such as performance assessment and feedback during professional coaching. Users of ECOVRD can initiate a shared real-time video annotation with their social network (Google Buzz) via XMPP protocol. The custom-built publish/subscribe architecture wrapped around GAE's channel service, pushes data from the cloud to subscribed clients resulting in real-time collaborative experience. ECORVD may be the first to successfully leverage the server push framework of GAE for desktop based video annotation applications.

data sets of immense size are regularly generated on large scale computing resources. Even among more traditional methods for acquisition of volume data, such as MRI and CT scanners, data which is too large to be effectively visualized on standard workstations is now commonplace. One solution to this problem is to employ a 'visualization cluster,' a small to medium scale cluster dedicated to performing visualization and analysis of massive data sets generated on larger scale supercomputers. These clusters are designed to fit a different need than traditional supercomputers, and therefore their design mandates different hardware choices, such as increased memory, and more recently, graphics processing units (GPUs). While there has been much previous work on distributed memory visualization as well as GPU visualization, there is a relative dearth of algorithms which effectively use GPUs at a large scale in a distributed memory environment. In this work, we study a common visualization technique in a GPU-accelerated, distributed memory setting, and present performance characteristics when scaling to extremely large data sets.
