Interval arithmetic was introduced by Ramon Moore [Moo66] in the 1960s as an approach to bound rounding errors in mathematical computation. The theory of interval analysis emerged considering the computation of both the exact solution and the error term as a single entity, i.e. the interval. Though a simple idea, it is a very powerful technique with numerous applications in mathematics, computerscience, and engineering. In this survey we discuss the basic concepts of interval arithmetic and some of its extensions, and review successful applications of this theory in particular in computerscience.
We present a novel approach for the direct computation of integral surfaces in time-dependent vector fields. As opposed to previous work, which we analyze in detail, our approach is based on a separation of integral s...

To better understand how developmental regulatory networks are defined in the genome sequence, the Berkeley Drosophila Transcription Network Project (BDNTP ) has developed a suite of methods to describe 3D gene expression data, i.e., the output of the network at cellular resolution for multiple time points. To allow researchers to explore these novel data sets we have developed PointCloudXplore (PCX). In PCX we have linked physical and information visualization views via the concept of brushing (cell selection). For each view dedicated operations for performing selection of cells are available. In PCX, all cell selections are stored in a central management system. Cells selected in one view can in this way be highlighted in any view allowing further cell subset properties to be determined. Complex cell queries can be defined by combining different cell selections using logical operations such as AND, OR, and NOT. Here we are going to provide an overview of PointCloudXplore 2 (PCX2), the latest publicly available version of PCX. PCX2 has shown to be an effective tool for visual exploration of 3D gene expression data. We discuss (i) all views available in PCX2, (ii) different strategies to perform cell selection, (iii) the basic architecture of PCX2., and (iv) illustrate the usefulness of PCX2 using selected examples.
We present interactive techniques for identifying and extracting features in function fields. Function fields map points in n-dimensional Euclidean space to 1-dimensional scalar functions. Visual feature identificatio...

The amino acid sequence of a protein is the key to understanding its structure and ultimately its function in the cell. This paper addresses the fundamental issue of encoding amino acids in ways that the visualization of protein sequences facilitates the decoding of its information content. We show that a feature-based representation in a three-dimensional (3D) space derived from substitution matrices provides an adequate representation from which the domain content of a protein can be predicted. In addition, we show that each dimension of the feature space can be related to a physical property of the amino acids.

Recent research has demonstrated the utility of using supervised classification systems for automatic identification of low quality microarray data. However, this approach requires annotation of a large training set by a qualified expert. In this paper we demonstrate the utility of an unsupervised classification technique based on the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm and naive Bayes classification. On our test set, this system exhibits performance comparable to that of an analogous supervised learner constructed from the same training data.

We introduce a system that adds a foveal inset to large-scale projection displays. The effective resolution of the foveal inset projection is higher than the original display resolution, allowing the user to see more details and finer features in large data sets. The foveal inset is generated by projecting a high-resolution image onto a mirror mounted on a pan-tilt unit (PTU) that is controlled by the user with a laser pointer. Our implementation is based on Chromium and supports many OpenGL applications without modifications.
