Small training sample effects common in statistical classification and artificial neural network classifier design are discussed. He is now manager of the Voluntary Cleanup Section of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (Environmental Cleanup Division 811 S.W. 6th Ave. Portland OR 97204) where he is working to develop streamlined procedures and processes for the investigation and cleanup of hazardous substance sites. James F. Pankow is professor and chairman of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at the Oregon Graduate Institute (Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology Department of Environmental Science and Engineering 19600 N.W. von Neumann Dr. Beaverton OR 97006–1999). He received his B.A. in chemistry in 1973 from the State University of New York in Binghamton and his Ph.D. in environmental engineering science from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena California in 1979. His group is involved in the study of the physical and chemical processes affecting the behavior of organic and inorganic chemicals in the environment. This work includes the development and application of sensitive analytical methods for the determination of trace organic contaminants in ground water systems. Jacob Gibs is an environmental engineer with the U.S. Geological Survey Water Resources Division (810 Bear Tavern Rd. Ste. 207 West Trenton NJ 08628). He received a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1968 an M.S. in environmental engineering in 1975 and a Ph.D. in environmental engineering in 1983 all from Drexel University Philadelphia Pennsylvania. He is currently project chief of a study on representative sampling of ground water for trace levels of organic compounds. His research interests include evaluating ground water sampling techniques and devices for purgeable organic compounds design of sampling

The relative precision and accuracy of sampling and analysis methods for the determination of trace concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ground water were compared. Samples were collected from a well containing nanogram-per-liter (ng/L) to microgram-per-liter (mu-g/L) levels of VOCs. A Keck helical rotor submersible pump was used to collect samples at the surface for analysis by purge and trap (P&T) and for analysis by adsorption/thermal desorption (ATD). Downhole samples were collected by passing water through an ATD cartridge. Although slight spontaneous bubble outgassing occurred when the water was brought to the surface, the relative precisions and comparabilities of the surface and downhole methods were generally found to be equivalent from a statistical point of view. A main conclusion of this study is that bringing sample water to the surface for placement in VOC vials (and subsequent analysis by P&T) can be done reliably under many circumstances. However, care must still be taken to prevent adsorption losses and cross contamination. Samples subject to strong bubble outgassing will need to be handled in a special fashion (e.g., by downhole ATD) to minimize volatilization losses. Additionally, the higher sensitivity of the ATD method allows lower detection limits than are possible with P&T. For example, several compounds present at the ng/L level could be determined with confidence by ATD, but not by P&T.

He received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the National Taiwan University and a M.A.Sc. in mechanical engineering from the University of British Columbia and a S.M. degree in oceanography and meteorology from Harvard University. Mr. Cheng is a registered professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia and a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Sigma Xi. His experience in fluid dynamics has included theory experiments and computations. He has been the author and coauthor of numerous technical reports and papers. Janet S. Dean:is a mathematician in the Numerical Fluid Dynamics Branch DTRC. She attended the College of William and Mary and received her B.S. degree in mathematics from The George Washington University. Mrs. Dean assisted Charles Dawson in the development of the original XYZFS Program. She has worked on improving and extending the capabilities of XYZFS and on the application of supercomputers to fluid dynamics problems. Ronald W. Miller:is a mechanical engineer in the Numerical Fluid Dynamics Branch DTRC. He received his B.A. degree in mathematics from the University of Maryland—Baltimore County Campus in 1984 and his M.S. in ocean and marine engineering from The George Washington University in 1988. Mr. Miller is responsible for the preparation of hull geometry data used in ship hydrodynamic analysis computer codes and the graphical visualization of output from such codes. William L. Cave III:graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1986 with a B.E. degree in ocean engineering. He is currently a naval architect in the Design Evaluation Branch Ship Hydromechanics Department DTRC. A computational capability has been developed to predict and visualize the flow about podded propulsors appended to the 154-foot transom stern research vessel, R/V Athena . The computer generation of a complex geometric model for the hull and appendages is an important part of this new capability. The flow field is computed using a free surface potential flow method. The steady flow induced by the propulsor is simulated by an idealized propeller model (actuator disk). The upstream effects of an actuator disk are examined and results are compared to the case without an actuator disk. Computed results for the inflow to the propeller disk are presented as velocity vector plots and contour plots. Harmonic analyses are performed on the computed velocity components. The numerical results can be used in conjunction with experiments performed at DTRC to aid in the design of podded propulsors. These flow studies are used to examine the proper alignment of the pod/strut system with the aim of obtaining the optimal flow into the propeller. The combined numerical and experimental approach is shown to be an efficient way to evaluate complex hull forms with podded propulsors. This powerful design approach can be used for future Navy ship designs.

For some time, medicine has been an important driver for the development of data processing and visualization techniques. Improved technology offers the capacity to generate larger and more complex data sets related to imaging and simulation. This, in turn, creates the need for more effective visualization tools for medical practitioners to interpret and utilize data in meaningful ways. The first edition of visualization in Medicine and Life sciences (VMLS) emerged from a workshop convened to explore the significant data visualization challenges created by emerging technologies in the life sciences. The workshop and the book addressed questions of whether medical data visualization approaches can be devised or improved to meet these challenges, with the promise of ultimately being adopted by medical experts. visualization in Medicine and Life sciences II follows the second international VMLS workshop, held in Bremerhaven, Germany, in July 2009. Internationally renowned experts from the visualization and driving application areas came together for this second workshop. The book presents peer-reviewed research and survey papers which document and discuss the progress made, explore new approaches to data visualization, and assess new challenges and research directions.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you all to the proceedings of the 2nd InternationalSymposiumonVisualComputing(ISVC2006)heldinLakeTahoe. Followinga successfulmeeting lastyear,wewitnesseda muchstrongerandmore productive event this year. ISVC o?ers a common umbrella for the four main areas of visual computing including vision, graphics, visualization, and virtual reality. Its goal is to provide a forum for researchers, scientists, engineers and practitionersthroughouttheworldtopresenttheirlatestresearch?ndings,ideas, developments and applications in the broader area of visual computing. This year, the program consisted of 13 oral sessions, one poster session, ten special tracks, and six keynote presentations. The response to the call for - pers was very strong. We received more than twice the papers received last year. Speci?cally, we received over 280 submissions for the main symposium from which we accepted 65 papers for oral presentation (23% acceptance) and 56 papers for poster presentation (20% acceptance). Special track papers were solicited separately through the Organizing and Program Committees of each track. A total of 57 papers were accepted for presentation in the special tracks. All papers were reviewed with an emphasis on potential to contribute to the state of the art in the ?eld. Selection criteria included accuracy and originality of ideas, clarity and signi?cance of results, and presentation quality. The review process was quite rigorous, involving two to three independent blind reviews followed by several days of discussion. During the discussion period we tried to correct anomalies and errors that might have existed in the initial reviews.
