Grid-based computational simulations often use hybrid unstructured grids consisting of various types of elements. Most commonly used elements are tetrahedral, pentahedral (namely, square pyramids and right triangular prisms) and hexahedral elements. Extracting isosurfaces of scalar fields defined on such hybrid unstructured grids is often done using indirect methods, such as, (a) subdividing all non-tetrahedral cells into tetrahedra and computing the triangulated isosurfaces using the marching tetrahedra algorithm, or (b) triangulating intersection points of edges of cells and computing the isosurface using a standard triangulation algorithm. Using the basic ideas underlying the well-established marching cubes and marching tetrahedra algorithms, which are applied to hexahedral and tetrahedral elements, respectively, we generate look-up tables for extracting isosurfaces directly from pentahedral elements. By using appropriate look-up tables, it is possible to process nearly all types of hybrid unstructured grids used in practical applications without the need for indirect methods. We construct look-up tables for square pyramidal and triangular prismatic cells with accurate topological considerations.

Chromosomal aberrations and somatic mutations constitute key elements of the pathogenesis of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a clonal hematologic malignancy characterized by cytopenias, a dysplastic bone marrow and propensity to clonal evolution. Next generation sequencing (NGS) enables definition of somatic mutational patterns and clonal architecture as a discovery platform, and for clinical *** systematically applied NGS to 707 cases of MDS and MDS-related disorders. 205 cases (low-risk MDS: N=78, high-risk MDS: N=42, MDS/MPN: N=48 and sAML: N=37) were tested by whole exome sequencing (WES). For validation in an additional 502 patients (low-risk MDS: N=192, high-risk MDS: N=104, MDS/MPN: N=111 and sAML: N=95), targeted deep NGS was applied for 60 index genes which were most commonly affected in the cohort analyzed by WES. For NGS data analysis a statistical pipeline was developed to focus on: i) identification of the most relevant somatic mutations, and ii) minimization of false positive results. We studied serial samples from 21 exemplary informative patients. We also compared somatic mutational patterns to those seen in primary AML TCGA cohort (N=201). Given the size of the cohort, there was, for example, a 87% chance of seeing mutations at a frequency of 1% and a 98% of seeing those with a frequency of 2%. While focusing on the most common events, we observed 1117 somatic mutations in 199 genes. The 88 genes mutated mutated in >1% of cases with MDS carried 388 mutations in MDS+sAML (2.5/case), 128 in MDS/MPN (2.7/case) and 398 in pAML (2.0/case). The average number of mutations per case increased during progression (2.2 in lower-risk, 2.8 in higher-risk MDS, 3.4 in sAML). In MDS, the 30 most frequently affected genes were present at least once in 70% of patients. The 30 most frequently mutated genes in MDS/MPN were mutated in 82% of patients. Progressive refinement is a methodology that makes it possible to elegantly integrate scalable data compression, access, and presentation into one approach. Specifically, this paper concerns the effective use of progressive parallel coordinates (PPCs), utilized routinely for high-dimensional data visualization. It discusses how the power of the typical stages of progressive data visualization can also be utilized fully for PPCs. Further, different implementations of the underlying methods and potential application domains are described. The paper also presents empirical results concerning the benefits of PPC with regard to efficient data management and improved presentation, indicating that the proposed approach is able to close the gap between data handling and visualization.

Obtaining high-quality 3D models of real world objects is an important task in computer vision. A very promising approach to achieve this is given by variational range image integration methods: They are able to deal with a substantial amount of noise and outliers, while regularising and thus creating smooth surfaces at the same time. Our paper extends the state-of-the-art approach of Zach et al.(2007) in several ways: (i) We replace the isotropic space-variant smoothing behaviour by an anisotropic (direction-dependent) one. Due to the directional adaptation, a better control of the smoothing with respect to the local structure of the signed distance field can be achieved. (ii) In order to keep data and smoothness term in balance, a normalisation factor is introduced. As a result, oversmoothing of locations that are seen seldom is prevented. This allows high quality reconstructions in uncontrolled capture setups, where the camera positions are unevenly distributed around an object. (iii) Finally, we use the more accurate closest signed distances instead of directional signed distances when converting range images into 3D signed distance fields. Experiments demonstrate that each of our three contributions leads to clearly visible improvements in the reconstruction quality. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

We report a comprehensive study of dc susceptibility, specific-heat, neutron-diffraction, and inelastic neutron-scattering measurements on polycrystalline Ba3(Cr1−xVx)2O8 samples, where x=0, 0.06, 0.15, and 0.53. A Jahn-Teller structure transition occurs for x=0, 0.06, and 0.15 samples, and the transition temperature is reduced upon vanadium substitution from 70(2) K at x=0 to 60(2) K at x=0.06 and 0.15. The structure becomes less distorted as x increases, and such transition disappears at x=0.53. The observed magnetic excitation spectrum indicates that the singlet ground state remains unaltered and spin-gap energy Δ=1.3(1) meV is identical within the instrument resolution for all x. In addition, the dispersion bandwidth W decreases with increase of x. At x=0.53, W is reduced to 1.4(1) meV from 2.0(1) meV at x=0.

The growth in size and complexity of scaling applications and the systems on which they run pose challenges in analyzing and improving their overall performance. With metrics coming from thousands or millions of processes, visualization techniques are necessary to make sense of the increasing amount of data. To aid the process of exploration and understanding, we announce the initial release of Boxfish, an extensible tool for manipulating and visualizing data pertaining to application behavior. Combining and visually presenting data and knowledge from multiple domains, such as the application's communication patterns and the hardware's network configuration and routing policies, can yield the insight necessary to discover the underlying causes of observed behavior. Boxfish allows users to query, filter and project data across these domains to create interactive, linked visualizations.

Several challenges can arise during augmented/virtual collaboration. In this paper, we identify and classify some of these challenges from a cognitive infocommunications (CogInfoCom) point of view. The starting point of our analysis is the VirCA NET application, which was built on the Virtual Collaboration Arena (VirCA) and developed at the MTA SZTAKI. First, we demonstrate how VirCA and VirCA NET belong to the CogInfoCom paradigm and how they are also related to Future Internet. To highlight our ideas in a practical use-case, we identify key features of infocommunication in a collaborative scenario for building industrial production layouts. In the collaborative scenario, factory planning is defined as a multi-stakeholder and multi-domain challenge, which distributed planning teams have to face. Based on the features of VirCA NET and the specifics of the scenario, we outline a list of challenges, some of which are already solved by the system to some extent, and some of which remain to be solved in future work. The challenges are presented in relation to the theoretical background of CogInfoCom engines and CogInfoCom channels, in order to further strengthen the link between augmented/virtual collaboration and the goals of CogInfoCom.

To take up the challenge of global distributed companies, Manufacturing Engineering has to be accomplished in a worldwide collaborative way. Design and development of production processes and their execution are nowadays spread all over the world. To ensure quality standards and to create synergies between spatially distributed entities, distance collaboration tools must be provided to allow cooperation even over large distances. The Virtual Reality (VR) is thereby offering beneficial capabilities to exchange current planning stages, identify problems and solve them cooperatively. This paper introduces a new approach for distance collaboration, which enables users to work in a joint virtual space, nearly as if they were working together in the same place. Therefore two full-immersive CAVE-like systems are interconnected using the VirCA (Virtual Collaboration Arena) platform. The paper describes the requirements of Mechanical Engineers towards distance collaboration tools and the technical challenges solved with the enhanced VirCA framework. This working prototype is one premier application in the field of VR-enhanced spatially distributed collaboration. A typical use case scenario is provided to highlight the interaction and cooperation capabilities offered by VirCA NET.

In terms of the Fuzzy Lyapunov method, this work proposes stability conditions for fuzzy logic control(FLC). Their application for chaotic systems can be approximated by the Tagagi-Sugeno(T-S) fuzzy model. The fuzzy Lyapunov function is defined as a fuzzy blending of quadratic Lyapunov functions. External forces or disturbances are not considered in the controlled systems. In the design controller procedure, a parallel distributed compensation(PDC) scheme is utilized to construct a global FLC by blending all linear local state feedback controllers. The stability criteria are found not only for fuzzy modeling but also for a real chaotic system. Furthermore, this controller design problem can be reduced to a linear matrix inequality(LMI) problem by use of the Schur Complements. Efficient interior-point algorithms are now available in Matlab toolbox to solve this type of problem.
