Accurate crop yield predictions are essential for agricultural planning and food security. Traditional methods relying on historical data are enhanced by modern techniques using satellite imagery, weather data, and soil conditions. This study presents an advanced crop yield forecasting model integrating deep reinforcement learning and multi-source remote sensing data. The Hybrid Reinforcement-Supervised Learning (HRSL) model combines reinforcement learning and supervised learning for enhanced classification and decision-making. Machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques analyze historical yield data and current season variables, improving prediction accuracy. Preprocessing steps like imputation, normalization, and atmospheric correction ensure robust datasets. Feature extraction with cascaded artificial neural networks (CANN) automates the learning of complex data relationships. Implemented using Python, this methodology achieves an accuracy of 97.8%. The proposed model demonstrates superior performance in yield prediction, evaluated through rigorous accuracy, precision, and training efficiency metrics. Integrating multi-source data with advanced machine learning models offers significant benefits for precision agriculture and food security. Future work will expand these techniques to broader applications and continuously improve predictive models with evolving data and computational capabilities. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The changing climate is anticipated to result in more frequent and extended heat waves having catastrophic effects on urban areas. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat is believed to adversely affect both physiological and psychological well-being, particularly for outdoor workers. This study analyzed the effects of hot weather conditions on the brainwaves of rickshaw pullers by examining changes in EEG signals before and after driving rickshaws at different air temperatures and relative humidity levels. We selected six rickshaw pullers as participants for six levels of air temperature (°C) and humidity condition (%) in various outdoor areas in Dhaka city, Bangladesh, while driving rickshaws for a duration of 20 to 30 minutes. The acquired EEG data assists in assessing the effects of heat exposure on cerebral activity. Our statistical analysis shows that there is a positive association between heat stress and the alpha band power of brainwaves. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

A good knowledge of the three-dimensional cardiomyocyte arrangement in interventricular septum is crucial for understanding both ventricle's functions. In this preliminary study, we investigate the local myocardial architecture in a human interventricular septum sample imaged by X-ray phase-contrast micro-tomography. This imaging modality allows us to visualize the complex structure of myocardial tissue at high resolution. We first cut the reconstruction data into sub-volume of 32×32×32 voxels (i.e. 112×112×112 μm3) in size, and compute the elevation angle of the local cardiomyocyte using Fast Fourier Transform based method. Then, we describe the distribution of cardiomyocyte elevation angle in the sample globally and locally. We note that, in part of regions, the running of cardiomyocyte aggregates is winding. Though the function of this specific cardiomyocyte arrangement manner is unclear, its existence is inspiring and merits further investigation. © 2024 IEEE.

Live Performances have been conducted online in recent years due to the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic. This generated a novel problem of losing eye contact with the performers, which deteriorates the viewing experience in the online setting. This study proposes a feedback system based on gaze modeling to augment the perceptual experience of being faced by the performer during an online live performance viewing. This system aims to improve the experience of viewing online live performances by recreating a perceptual experience of interaction between the performer and the audience. The proposed system consists of a gaze recognition unit that judges whether the performer is looking at the camera based on gaze modeling in the video, and a stimulus presentation unit that presents the judgement result to the audience through vibration stimulus. This paper describes the gaze recognition model, experiments to determine the parameters to be used in the model, and the evaluation of live performance viewing experiments using the proposed system. © 2024 IEEE.

We propose a novel framework for incorporating unlabeled data into semi-supervised classification problems, where scenarios involving the minimization of either i) adversarially robust or ii) non-robust loss functions have been considered. Notably, we allow the unlabeled samples to deviate slightly (in total variation sense) from the in-domain distribution. The core idea behind our framework is to combine Distributionally Robust Optimization (DRO) with self-supervised training. As a result, we also leverage efficient polynomial-time algorithms for the training stage. From a theoretical standpoint, we apply our framework on the classification problem of a mixture of two Gaussians in Rd, where in addition to the m independent and labeled samples from the true distribution, a set of n (usually with n m) out of domain and unlabeled samples are given as well. Using only the labeled data, it is known that the generalization error can be bounded by ∝ (d/m)1/2. However, using our method on both isotropic and non-isotropic Gaussian mixture models, one can derive a new set of analytically explicit and non-asymptotic bounds which show substantial improvement on the generalization error compared to ERM. Our results underscore two significant insights: 1) out-of-domain samples, even when unlabeled, can be harnessed to narrow the generalization gap, provided that the true data distribution adheres to a form of the "cluster assumption", and 2) the semi-supervised learning paradigm can be regarded as a special case of our framework when there are no distributional shifts. We validate our claims through experiments conducted on a variety of synthetic and real-world datasets. © 2024 12th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2024. Unsupervised domain adaptation excels in transferring knowledge from a labeled source domain to an unlabeled target domain, playing a critical role in time series applications. Existing time series domain adaptation methods either ignore frequency features or treat temporal and frequency features equally, which makes it challenging to fully exploit the advantages of both types of features. In this paper, we delve into transferability and discriminability, two crucial properties in transferable representation learning. It's insightful to note that frequency features are more discriminative within a specific domain, while temporal features show better transferability across domains. Based on the findings, we propose Adversarial CO-learning Networks (ACON), to enhance transferable representation learning through a collaborative learning manner in three aspects: (1) Considering the multi-periodicity in time series, multi-period frequency feature learning is proposed to enhance the discriminability of frequency features;(2) Temporal-frequency domain mutual learning is proposed to enhance the discriminability of temporal features in the source domain and improve the transferability of frequency features in the target domain;(3) Domain adversarial learning is conducted in the correlation subspaces of temporal-frequency features instead of original feature spaces to further enhance the transferability of both features. Extensive experiments conducted on a wide range of time series datasets and five common applications demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance of ACON. The battery energy storage system (BESS) has immense potential for enhancing grid reliability and security through its participation in the electricity market. BESS often seeks various revenue streams by taking part in multiple markets to unlock its full potential, but effective algorithms for joint-market participation under price uncertainties are insufficiently explored in the existing research. To bridge this gap, we develop a novel BESS joint bidding strategy that utilizes deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to bid in the spot and contingency frequency control ancillary services (FCAS) markets. Our approach leverages a transformer-based temporal feature extractor to effectively respond to price fluctuations in seven markets simultaneously and helps DRL learn the best BESS bidding strategy in joint-market participation. Additionally, unlike conventional 'black-box' DRL model, our approach is more interpretable and provides valuable insights into the temporal bidding behavior of BESS in the dynamic electricity market. We validate our method using realistic market prices from the Australian National Electricity Market. The results show that our strategy outperforms benchmarks, including both optimization-based and other DRL-based strategies, by substantial margins. Our findings further suggest that effective temporal-aware bidding can significantly increase profits in the spot and contingency FCAS markets compared to individual market participation. © 2023 IEEE.

Pancreatic cancer poses a significant challenge in early detection and treatment due to its malignant nature within the digestive tract. Recent studies, such as those conducted by the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, predict that pancreatic cancer will rank as the world's second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in 2020. Various methods have been explored in the literature to segment pancreatic tumors and detect lesions from CT images, crucial for assessing severity. One such method is the Min-Max segmentation algorithm, which effectively removes the jaundiced sclera region from affected eyes by analysing color gradients, offering more feasible and discriminative solutions. Additionally, the utilization of Whale Optimized feature-based selection aids in extracting optimal features for optimization purposes. Through an analysis of different classification algorithms and the implementation of a suggested technique for achieving optimum solutions and maximum accuracy, the proposed work is structured into two phases. Phase I involves pre-processing and artifact removal, followed by segmentation, while Phase II focuses on feature extraction, feature selection, and classification. The initial step of pre-processing the image facilitates pixel location using intensity measures, crucial for accurate tumor segmentation and minimizing false detection. Ultimately, the proposed approach aims to design and develop an optimal feature selection strategy for classifying pancreatic cancer tumors in PET/CT images, resulting in increased classification efficiency 92% and improved cancer tumor detection rates with compare other existing approaches. © 2024 IEEE.
