Current research studies deal with the investigation of the thermal and optical properties of four LED modules on different substrate materials. The LED modules consist of arrays of 98 blue emitting LEDs with an emission wavelength of 457 nm within an area of 2.11 cm 2 . The modules are based on aluminum oxide or aluminum nitride substrates and the LED chips are attached by using a soldering or a pressureless silver sintering process. The modules are mounted on a high performance microstructured heat exchanger. By using the water driven cooler a maximum optical power density of 106.2 W/cm 2 at a forward current of 2100 mA and 837.5 W electrical input power is achieved. A saturation of the optical power density over the input current due to thermal degradation is not observed.

In order to harness abundant hardware resources, parallel programming has become a necessity in multicore era. However, parallel programs are prone to concurrency bugs, especially data races. Even worse, current software tools always suffer from both large runtime overheads and poor scalability, while most of hardware supports for race detection are not available in parallel programming. Therefore, it has been a challenge that how to introduce a practical and fast race detection tools. Nowadays, GPUs with massive parallel computation resources have become one of the most popular hardware platforms. Hence, the prevalence of GPU architectures has opened an opportunity of accelerating data race detection. In this paper, we first have a deeply analysis on data race detection algorithms like happens-before and observe that these algorithms have very good computation and data parallelism. Based on the observation, we propose Grace, a software approach that leverages massive parallelism computation units of GPU architectures to accelerate data race detection. Grace deploys detection, the most computation intensive workload, on GPU to fully utilize the computation resource in GPU. Moreover, Grace leverages coarse-grained pipeline parallelism and data parallelism through exploiting the computation resource in multi-core CPUs to further improve performance. Experimental results show that Grace is fast and scalable. It achieves over 80x speedup compared to the sequential version even under a 128-thread configuration. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

In this paper we describe a new multichannel room impulse responses database. The impulse responses are measured in a room with configurable reverberation level resulting in three different acoustic scenarios with reverberation times RT 60 equals to 160 ms, 360 ms and 610 ms. The measurements were carried out in recording sessions of several source positions on a spatial grid (angle range of -90° to 90° in 15° steps with 1 m and 2 m distance from the microphone array). The signals in all sessions were captured by three microphone array configurations. The database is accompanied with software utilities to easily access and manipulate the data. Besides the description of the database we demonstrate its use in spatial source separation task.

According to the time&space conversion relations and different frequency phase detection principle,an ultra-high precision time&frequency measurement method is proposed in this *** higher accuracy and stability of the speed of light and electromagnetic signals during the transmission in space or a specific medium enable the measurement of short time interval which uses the coincidence detection of signal’s transmission delay in *** measurement precision better than 10 picoseconds can be easily *** method develops the length vernier utilizing the stability of signal’s transmission delay,minimizes the fuzzy region of phase coincidence between the standard frequency signal and the measured signal,approaches the best phase coincidences and therefore improves the measurement precision which is higher than the precision provided by the traditional methods based on frequency ***,the method costs less than the traditional methods and can also solve the problem of the measurement of super-high *** results show the method can improve the measurement precision to 10 12/s in the time&frequency domain.

Instrumentation is an important mechanism to collect run-time information of applications for further analysis like bottleneck analysis, hotspot analysis and even bug detection and revision. Currently there are lots of analyzers using instrumentation to collect their source data. However, most of these tools lack of full-system support and thus become inadequate for analyzing multi-core programs as they cannot provide full-system information like scheduling, system calls and inter-process communication, etc. Meanwhile, full-system instrumentation needs to collect OS and hardware information, resulting to performance degradation. In this paper, a high-performance full-system instrumentation method was designed for collecting full-system information as well as application information. The proposed method was implemented inside the QEMU full-system emulator, and 40 MIPS performance on average was achieved after optimization, which was appropriated for normal program analysis. ©, 2014, Northeastern University. 3D USCT II is a new imaging method aimed at early detection of breast cancer. Synthetic aperture focusing technique is used for reconstructing images which requires unfocused ultrasound emission and reception. Thus the SNR received is low. Coded excitation (CE) and match filtering techniques are used to increase the SNR. The Currently applied CE is a linear chirp. The received A-scans contain multiple superimposed reflections which are difficult to separate due to the system's limited bandwidth side lobes. Literature suggests Huffman sequence (HS) as CE to gain more control over side lobe distribution. Since the system has limited bandwidth, the HS is received band limited and which does not produce satisfactory results. A method is presented here to design HS under limited bandwidth preserving their good properties. The evaluation has been carried out with well established metrics like MSR and SLD. The results show better performance than using a chirp for side lobe suppression by trading-off main lobe energy.

Purpose - The aim of this paper is to assemble an experimental solar-based charging station for electric vehicles. This global system integrates a photovoltaic station, electric vehicles and a supervision base. The communication has been set up through a wireless network. This paper presents this project realized by different groups of foreign students working through an International Collaboration in engineering Education. Design/methodology/ approach - The approach is based on connecting technical research with engineering education. For a few years, the need of further research on renewable energies has leaded to the initiation of several student projects at the university. A group of co-operating foreign students working together within the framework of a technically innovative subject has been created through the international relations activity of the University of Artois, at IUT of Bethune (Institut Universitaire de Technologie), situated in the northern region of France. Findings - A prototype of the recharging station has been built. The measures of the energetic performances showed a good efficiency. The data exchange through the wireless network is operating properly and a computer-based supervising unit is responsible for the coordination of the station/vehicle control. The established international collaboration has demonstrated the possibility of carrying out common students' projects. Originality/value - The originality of this paper is coming from the major subjects of sustainability such as renewable energies and transportation. A solar-based station has been built and supplies electric vehicles. The wireless communication has been applied in order to perform control on long distances. This international collaboration is an innovative way for enhancing the collaboration performance in engineering education. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.
