We present a high power density UV LED module for a wavelength of 395 nm with an optical power density of 27.3 W/cm~2. The module consists of 98 densely packed LED chips soldered onto an Al_2O_3 ceramic board. Thermal and optical measurements were conducted. The module was cooled by a forced air heat sink for the characterization experiments. A room temperature liquid gallium alloy was used as thermal interface material between substrate and heat sink with a TiN barrier layer to prevent corrosion. Further a technology to replace Al_2O_3 ceramics by aluminum as substrate is presented. An initial characterization shows that aluminum with a dielectric layer for electrical insulation is a competitive substrate material for efficient heat removal.

Wireless sensor networks for environmental monitoring and agricultural applications often face long-range requirements at low bit-rates together with large numbers of nodes. Most existing wireless sensor networks use nodes with a short-range radio and use software protocols to schedule the nodes and co-ordinate multi-hop routing in order to minimise power usage. Nodes have a relatively small radio range up to a few hundred meters that is also affected by the crop growth stage and vegetation density [2]. Disadvantages of this approach include the complexity of software protocols required to co-ordinate the nodes' behaviour and the unreliable nature of the short range radio links that requires sophisticated fault tolerance mechanisms. An alternative design solution is to use low frequency, long-range radios to build a single-hop network of a base station with satellite sensing nodes [4]. This approach has the benefits of much simpler software protocols, and that transmissions in the 40 MHz band are expected to be more reliable in outdoor settings than short range transmission in the 433 MHz or 915 MHz band used by most existing sensor network radios.

We report on trace gas and major atmospheric constituents results obtained by the Vehicle Cabin Atmosphere Monitor (VCAM) during operations aboard the International Space Station (ISS). VCAM is an autonomous environmental monitor based on a miniature gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer. It was flown to the ISS on shuttle mission STS-131 and commenced operations on 6/10/10. VCAM provides measurements of ppb-to-ppm levels of volatile trace-gas constituents, and of the atmospheric major constituents (nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and carbon dioxide) in a space vehicle or station. It is designed to operate autonomously and maintenance-free, approximately once per day, with a self-contained gas supply sufficient for a one-year lifetime. VCAM is designed to detect and identify 90% of the target compounds at their 180-day Spacecraft Maximum Allowable Concentration levels. © 2011 by the American institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

In this work a remote controlled system for acquiring and processing EEG signals is presented having also capabilities of distributed EEG data processing. The system consists of a PC running specialized software and a specialized data acquisition (DAQ) card. The software environment for contacting remote EEG signal acquisition, analysis and data access is based on the well known National Instrument's Lab- VIEW. EEG data can be transmitted over the internet and the associated software provides security in EEG and diagnostic analysis data sharing preventing access by unauthorized viewers. The EEG data processing is based on Independent Component Analysis technique (ICA). This technique allows good separation of signals arising from brain and non-brain sources (artifacts), as well as the distinction of the temporal discrete but spatial overlapping brain activities. The presented system is used for sharing confidential EEG data over the internet providing an automatic decision-making tool for a "second opinion" analysis in a clinical diagnosis procedure. © 2010 International Federation for Medical and Biological engineering.

Super-High Resolution Time Interval Measurement Method Based on Time-Space Relationships

Based on the principle of quantized delay-time, a super-high resolution time interval measurement method is proposed based on time-space relationships. Using the delay-time stability that time and frequency signal travel in a specific medium, the measured time interval can be quantized. Combined with the phase coincidence detection technique, the measurement of time can be changed into the measurement of space length. The resolution and the stability of the measurement system are easily improved. Experimental results show that the measurement resolution of the measured time interval depends on the length difference of the double delay-time unit. When the length difference is set up on millimeter level or sub-millimeter level, super-high measurement resolution from hundreds of picosecond to tens of picosecond can be obtained.

We have investigated the optical resonance and near field effects of 2D periodic and absorptive polystyrene (PS) microspheres on Si wafers. The light scattering and coupling of neighbored PS spheres was numerically studied. Nanostructures were prepared on Si substrates using the regular 2D arrays by a single pulsed laser irradiation (KrF, ¿ = 248 nm). Periodical PS nanoparticle, PS nanoflowers and Si nanobumps were fabricated by different laser fluence. Mechanisms for PS particle size reduction and Si nanobump formation by laser irradiation were discussed on the base of the theoretical calculations. Good agreement between theoretical calculations and experimental results has been observed.

The paper is focused on ultrasonic transmission tomography as a potential medical imaging modality for breast cancer diagnosis. Ultrasound speed is one of the tissue parameters which are related to the pathological tissue state. An alternative to the commonly used filtered backprojection is presented, which can solve the problem of sparse transducer distribution. It is based on regularization of the image reconstruction problem which imposes smoothness in the resulting images while preserving edges. The approach is analyzed on synthetic data sets and illustrated on data acquired on a tissue phantom. ©2009 IEEE.

We consider the recognition of dangerous situations in vehicle traffic. Unscented Kalman filters are used to predict vehicle trajectories within a short prediction horizon [t 0 , t 0 + Deltat]. Based on this prediction, for each vehicle pair the mutual distance is computed for [t 0 , t 0 + Deltat], whereby the distance accounts for the geometric distance, for the prediction uncertainties as well as for the spatial dimensions of the vehicles. If at least one of the mutual distances falls below a distance threshold isin within [t 0 , t 0 + Deltat], then a dangerous situation arises for the cooperative group and may lead to an autonomous cooperative driving manoeuvre. This approach allows the usage of the system in a mixed environment (only some vehicles are cooperative and cognitive). Obstacles can also be handled. The key issues in this ongoing research work are the recognition and classification of dangerous situations and the formation of a cooperative group constituting an operational unit. A common relevant picture within a group coordinator fuses the necessary information from all cooperative vehicles of the group and forms the basis for situation recognition and classification. This paper is a step to expand a Cooperative Collision Warning System (CCWS) to an integrated Cooperative Collision Avoidance and Cooperative Collision Mitigation System (CCAMS).

Investigation on the optical resonance and near field effects of a 2D periodic dielectric spheres on metallic surfaces by combining theoretical calculations with experimental studies were carried out. The light scattering and coupling was numerically studied. Nanostructures were fabricated on the metallic surfaces using these arrays of micro- and nano-spheres with a single laser pulse (KrF, λ=248 nm). The occurrence of such nanostructures is well explained by the theoretical calculations. The results can be useful in investigation and development of spheres-assisted nano-patterning. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

Currently, there is a high demand for autonomous industrial production systems. This paper outlines the development of a cognitive system for autonomous robotic welding. This system is based on dimensionality reduction techniques and Support Vector Machines, allowing the system to learn to separate between acceptable and unacceptable welding results within one batch, and to transfer this ability to a batch with different workpiece properties. It does not aim at a complete and general relationship between all process variables and result quantities, since it has been demonstrated that this is not necessary to reduce significantly the costs of calibrating the welding system. The main objective is to examine a cognitive system that stabilizes robotic welding processes by learning how to improve at least one process steering variable. In order to evaluate and improve the cognitive system, an extensive experimental setup is realized and described. The ability to learn and autonomously adapt to changes in workpiece properties allows the system to reduce the time an expert needs, and relaxes the requirements with respect to workpiece tolerances.
