He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in engineering from Kyoto university Japan in 1992 and 1994 respectively. From 1994 to 1998 he was a Research Associate in the Department of Information Technology Okayama University. Since April 1998 he has been a Research Associate in the Graduate School of Informatics Kyoto University. His current research interests include robust control and control system design via mathematical programming. Yutaka Yamamoto received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in engineering from Kyoto University Kyoto Japan in 1972 and 1974 respectively and the M.S. and Ph.D. degree in mathematics from the University of Florida in 1976 and 1978 respectively. From 1978 to 1987 he was with Department of Applied Mathematics and Physics Kyoto University and from 1987 to 1997 with Department of Applied System Science. Since 1998 he is a professor at the current position. His current research interests include realization and robust control of distributed parameter systems learning control sampled-data systems and digital signal processing. Dr. Yamamoto is a receipient of the Sawaragi memorial paper award (1985) the Outstanding Paper Award of SICE (1987) Best Author Award of SICE (1990) the George Axelby Outstanding Paper Award of IEEE CSS in 1996 Takeda Paper Prize of SICE in 1997. He is a Fellow of IEEE. He was an associate editor of Automatica. He is currently an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control Systems and Control Letters and Mathematics of Control Signals and Systems. He is a member of the IEEE the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE) and the Institute of Systems Control and Information Engineers.

This paper presents a design method of control systems such that a designer can flexibly take account of tradeoffs between evaluated uncertainty ranges and the level of control performance. The problem is reduced to a BMI problem and approximately solved by LMIs. The convergence of the proposed approximation is proved in a modified sense. A numerical example shows the effectiveness of the proposed method in comparison with the standard robust control.

Determining the model-order of a given data set is an important task in signal analysis. Principal component analysis (PCA) can be used for this purpose if there is a criterion upon which the correct order can be chosen. In this work, we propose a new and simple technique to determine automatically the rank of a PCA model. Tested with simulated data, the algorithm is able to determine the correct model order efficiently. Applied to video sequences, this method is able to estimate the necessary subspaces that capture the motion and illuminance changes within the different frames. This helps in reducing the storage need/requirements of video sequences and improves the efficiency of context based search and retrieval techniques.

This paper presents the comparison study on at-sensor brightness temperatures measured by Terra ASTER and Landsat ETM+. The study area is located along the east coast from the north of North Carolina to the southern Virginia, USA. Experimental data are two adjacent pairs of cloudless and nearly coincident (just about half hour apart) ASTER and ETM+ scenes, both of which were acquired on July 29, 2002. Digital numbers of Landsat ETM+ thermal band data were first converted to the spectral radiance using both high and low gains and then to the temperature in degrees C by using the reversed Planck's function to obtain the at-sensor brightness temperature. ASTER at-sensor brightness temperature and corresponding surface temperature were derived from its standard products AST 04 and 08 respectively and converted as well to degrees C, and then re-projected to the same projection system as that of Landsat ETM+. For matching spectrally, band 13 and 14 of ASTER at-sensor data were averaged before being compared with Landsat ETM+ thermal band, and mean ASTER at-sensor temperature was obtained by averaging all of the five ASTER thermal bands. To facilitate comparison, spatial resampling was also conducted on ASTER data to achieve the same spatial resolution as that of ETM+ band 6. Finally, common areas covered by each pair of scenes were extracted for analysis. Two sampling strategies, random and systematic (i.e., every a number of rows and columns), were employed in the study to obtain the pixels for constructing scatter plots, and dependent on the dimension of the data sets involved, about 8, 000 or 18,000 pixels (~1% of data volume) were used for each plot. Results indicate that minimum, maximum, mean, and standard deviation of the at-sensor temperatures of these two sensors are very similar for the entire areas commonly covered by each pair of scenes. Identifying the causal genetic markers responsible for complex diseases is a main aim in human genetics. In the context of complex diseases, which are believed to have multiple causal loci of largely unknown effect and position, there is a need to develop advanced methods for gene mapping. In this work, we propose a novel algorithm based on independent component analysis for gene mapping. To apply the algorithm, we model the intra-cellular interactions as a mixing process of multiple sources. Results prove the superiority of the proposed algorithm over conventional statistical based methods, and demonstrate yet another successful application of a well known signal processing technique to an important problem in the field of human genetics.

Content Distribution Networks (CDNs) are highly advanced architectures for networks on the Internet, providing low latency, scalability, fault tolerance, and load balancing. One of the most important issues to realize these advantages of CDNs is dynamic content allocation to deal with temporal load fluctuation, which provides mirroring of content files in order to distribute user accesses. Since user accesses for content files change over time, the content files need to be reallocated appropriately. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective content migration method called the Step-by-Step (SxS) Migration Algorithm for CDNs, which can dynamically relocate content files while reducing transmission cost. We show that our method maintains sufficient performance while reducing cost in comparison to the conventional shortest-path migration method. Further-more, we present six life cycle models of content to consider realistic traffic patterns in our simulation experiments. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of our SxS Migration Algorithm for dynamic content reconfiguration across time. Panchromatic data of pixel resolution 5.8 m obtained from IRS-IC and IRS-ID satellites proved to be very useful for mapping purposes. One of the popular data product is the 70 km swath mosaic which is covered by a combination of 3 CCD line sensors, each with 4096 pixels. Each CCD-line sensor with different imaging times causes geometric problems of mosaicing three strips data together. In this paper, we propose the details of the design elements of system that caters to the need for accurate and automatic multi strip image registration without any second resampling of the data. The systematic geometric correction grid mapping is improved to facilitate accurate mosaicing by automatic image registration task that makes use of the overlap data within image strips and image registration is achieved up to sub-pixel level.

The industry is currently starting to use MPEG-4 compressed digital video for surveillance applications. The transition from analog to digital video raises difficulties for using surveillance video in court. Since it is fairly easy to make hard-to-detect modifications to the video stream captured by the cameras, e.g. mask out a specific event or person, a system for proving authenticity and integrity of video streams is needed. This paper presents such a system based on digital signatures embedded in the video stream. Our concept provides a means for proving authenticity and integrity of MPEG-4 digital video streams, while leaving compatibility with standard media players untouched.

Standard compliant enhancements of the emerging H.264/AVC coding algorithm for transmission over lossy IP-based networks are described with the error resilience features being presented in greater detail. Standard compliant encoder and decoder enhancements as well as the exploitation of transport layer mechanisms to improve the quality in packet lossy environments are presented. Different schemes are compared and appropriate experimental results based on common test conditions are discussed. Finally, the selection of suitable features is discussed.
