Two major performance issues of Flash NAND are the write latency for random writes, and the lifetime of NAND chips. Several methods, mainly focusing on the Flash Translation Layer (FTL) or the Flash Buffer Management have been proposed to address these problems. In this paper, we propose an idea of reducing write traffic to Flash by the following steps: First we avoid repeated writes to Flash SSD by finding the redundant writes using a cryptographic HASH cipher. We design a set of acceleration techniques to reduce the latency overhead of this extra computational cost. Then we propose a PCM-based buffer extender for Flash SSD where we write the frequent updates to hot pages of Flash into PCM layer, which allows in-page update. Finally, while merging the PCM updated data to the Flash page, we use a special merging technique to change the flushes into sequential flushes, as sequential writes on Flash are almost thrice as fast as random writes. We maintain the redundant write finder mechanism in PCM. We test our design using a trace-driven simulator. The results show that compared to the traditional design technique, lifetime of Flash SSD can be more than quadrupled, while consuming 20% less power to do so with some improvement in write performance as well.

The Large Scale data Facility (LSDF) was conceived and launched at the Karlsruhe institute of Technology (KIT) end of 2009 to address the growing need for value-added storage services for data intensive experiments. The LSDF main focus is to support scientific experiments producing large data sets reaching into the petabyte range with adequate storage, support and value added services for data management, processing and preservation. In this work we describe the approach taken to perform data analysis in LSDF, as well as for data management of the scientific datasets.

The Large Scale data Facility (LSDF) was started at the Karlsruhe institute of Technology (KIT) end of 2009 to address the growing need for value-added storage services for its data intensive experiments. The main focus of the project is to provide scientific communities producing data collections in the tera - to petabyte range with the necessary hardware infrastructure as well as with adequate value-added services and support for the data management, processing, and preservation. In this work we describe the project's infrastructure and services design, as well as its meta data handling. Both community specific meta data schemes, a meta data repository, an application programming interface and a graphical tool for accessing the resources were developed to further support the processing workflows of the partner scientific communities. The analysis workflow of high throughput microscopy images for studying biomedical processes is described in detail.

Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are a theoretical class of particles that are excellent dark matter candidates. WIMP annihilation or decay may produce essentially monochromatic γ rays detectable by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) against the astrophysical γ-ray emission of the Galaxy. We have searched for spectral lines in the energy range 5–300 GeV using 3.7 years of data, reprocessed with updated instrument calibrations and an improved energy dispersion model compared to the previous Fermi-LAT Collaboration line searches. We searched in five regions selected to optimize sensitivity to different theoretically motivated dark matter density distributions. We did not find any globally significant lines in our a priori search regions and present 95% confidence limits for annihilation cross sections of self-conjugate WIMPs and decay lifetimes. Our most significant fit occurred at 133 GeV in our smallest search region and had a local significance of 3.3 standard deviations, which translates to a global significance of 1.5 standard deviations. We discuss potential systematic effects in this search, and examine the feature at 133 GeV in detail. We find that the use both of reprocessed data and of additional information in the energy dispersion model contributes to the reduction in significance of the linelike feature near 130 GeV relative to significances reported in other works. We also find that the feature is narrower than the LAT energy resolution at the level of 2 to 3 standard deviations, which somewhat disfavors the interpretation of the 133 GeV feature as a real WIMP signal.

Wireless sensor networks generate volumes of scientific observations. However, gathered data is typically not published for use by other scientists. This paper analyses the reasons that so little sensor network data is published online in a usable form, and identifies gaps in currently available publication systems. To address these gaps we present WebSense, a lightweight and configurable web-based tool for sensor network researchers to publish their collected data. The design goals and implementation of WebSense are described and the system is evaluated against the goals. WebSense is available from http://***/.

The intrinsic ferromagnetism (FM) in phase-change (PC) magnetic materials was studied by first-principle calculations and experiments. The doped Fe or other transition metals tend to substitute at the Sb site of Ge2Sb2Te5. An asymmetric coupling, between px and py rather than pz states of Te and d states of Fe, creates magnetic moments and holes in the p band. The findings reveal a strong dependence of FM interaction on Fe-Fe pair distances and crystallographic orientation. A design principle with three criteria is proposed for exploring new PC magnetic materials.

We measured separate cosmic-ray electron and positron spectra with the Fermi Large Area Telescope. Because the instrument does not have an onboard magnet, we distinguish the two species by exploiting Earth’s shadow, which is offset in opposite directions for opposite charges due to Earth’s magnetic field. We estimate and subtract the cosmic-ray proton background using two different methods that produce consistent results. We report the electron-only spectrum, the positron-only spectrum, and the positron fraction between 20 and 200 GeV. We confirm that the fraction rises with energy in the 20–100 GeV range. The three new spectral points between 100 and 200 GeV are consistent with a fraction that is continuing to rise with energy.
