Maintaining high magnesium/lithium selectivity in nanofiltration at high salinity: optimizing membrane charge distribution for synergistic Donnan and ion adhesion effects

Nanofiltration membranes are essential for lithium recovery from brine, but their selectivity declines under high-salt conditions due to electrostatic shielding and fouling. We introduce a novel strategy to enhance membrane performance by enhancing positive charge density on the membrane surface while creating negative charge microdomains within the membrane. Specifically, we functionalized a polyethyleneimine-based membrane with 1,4-butanesultone through a ring-opening reaction, which balanced ion-membrane affinity and optimized the transport kinetics of water and ions. The resulting membrane exhibited a significant enhancement in permeance up to 11.2 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and selectivity for Mg2+/Li+ up to 51. Notably, it maintained over 96.21 % MgCl2 rejection across a wide salt concentration range of 1–20 g L−1, outperforming the results reported in literature. The comprehensive testing and mechanistic study indicate that this improved performance is due to the synergy of Donnan effect and ion-attraction, facilitated by the designed charge distribution. A two-stage nanofiltration process employing this membrane reduced the Mg2+/Li+ ratio in brine samples from 43 to 0.25, highlighting its practical application potential. This paper deals with master data from the project management environment. A general approach for predicting project outcome including goal achievement is developed. A first implementation in RapidMiner Studio V9.10 based on a decision tree algorithm is derived and discussed. The purpose of this paper is to provide a basic understanding of the topic and to adapt the theory to existing enterprise data. The potential of predictive analytics for project management is illustrated and a promising practical implementation with existing software is derived and demonstrated. © 2023 IEEE.

Collaboration Platforms are virtual or physical places that serve as an intermediary or medium for the exchange of technology, knowledge, products or services between previously independent actors or institutions. In academia, they can facilitate the collaboration between universities. One increasingly important area of collaboration is knowledge management and transfer. In this paper, a literature review is applied in order to derive the state of the art of university platforms for knowledge management. Based on this, the purpose of such platforms is analysed. The results indicate that knowledge transfer focuses on teaching, research, and transfer activities. Often, e-learning platforms are used to facilitate cross-university transfer of knowledge. The motivation to use such platforms is to share knowledge, to make use of synergies in cooperation and to gain more visibility. It is also shown in this paper, that despite its common application, there is a gap in scientifically evaluating the effective contribution of such platforms as enabler for knowledge management. Teaching and research have been the core activities of universities since ages. Nowadays, the topic of transfer is increasingly coming into focus, as universities are no longer seen as "ivory towers" in which research is cut off from the rest of the society, but rather as establishments with a profound knowledge and technology transfer. However, transfer often still occurs in an uncoordinated manner without distinct processes or coordination. A digital transformation of transfer activities could support and make universities fit for the future of transfer. Calibrating camera networks is a complex yet crucial task for ensuring accurate data collection, particularly for large-scale scenarios. This work's main contribution is a method for efficiently estimating the network's extrinsic paramaters for every camera. It also determines their effective coverage without requiring overlapping fields of view. We propose ESCal, an efficient and scalable solution that leverages homographies and point correspondences while disregarding their prerequisite of planar scenes. It semi-automatically determines the pose of the considered cameras given one top view of the scene. Our approach is designed to be fast, easy to use, scalable, and sufficiently accurate. We demonstrate these qualities under real-world conditions. © 2024 IEEE.

Agile project management is an established approach in software development and over time has also been adapted to different fields of work. While there are proven advantages for an agile development process, not all branches have incorporated agile methods in their project and development practices yet. One of these branches is the medical device industry. They often fall back on traditional, plan-based process models due to regulatory and normative requirements because of perceived conformity. ADmed is a process model that combines agile and plan-based processes while still adhering to the necessary regulatory requirements. In order to make it more accessible and approachable for a wide range of users it also incorporates adaptive elements, which are adjusted based on the user context. Beam-based sensors like LiDAR are indispensable for modern infrastructures, machines, and autonomous moving objects. Their placement is crucial for their value and acceptance in the considered applications. However, determining the sensor's blind areas requires significant time and resources when relying on simulation. We propose a set of analytical indicators that significantly reduce this overhead associated with the placement and installation of beam-based *** on a geometrical model that considers both the sensor and sensing quality, we define novel indicators accordingly and show their effectiveness for intelligent traffic safety infrastructure. The proposed indicators contribute to sensor calibration during the initial sensor setup and represent a vital step toward self-calibration throughout the entire system's life cycles. © 2023 IEEE.

Achieving the complete adsorption of phosphorus-containing organics from the complex wastewater generated during the recycling process of waste batteries is a critical environment challenge. The research findings of this work reveal that in complex solution systems, ions can significantly alter the hydrophilicity or structural morphology of phosphorus-containing organic compounds, thereby influencing their adsorption efficacy. Based on these insights, an innovative adsorption strategy based on ion-regulation was proposed for the complete removal of phosphorus-containing organics from complex wastewater. By precisely modulating the concentration of H3O+ ions within actual cobalt extraction wastewater prior to the adsorption process, we achieved a removal rate exceeding 99.98% for phosphorus-containing organics. This breakthrough offers innovative perspectives for the comprehensive removal of organic pollutants in complex wastewaters within the waste battery recycling sector and provides important guarantees for the industry’s environmental health and sustainable development. © 2025, The Authors. Cities are facing regularly changing societal and infrastructural needs because of multiple reasons like a growing population, new ways of life and new societal needs, climate change, or digitalization. Often, changing needs and boundary conditions show a much higher dynamic than city administrations can cope with. The development of long-term strategies and concepts for smart cities and their implementation can, thus, be facilitated by integrating knowledge and competences available at innovative research institutions, like universities. Recent studies suggest that universities may take a leading role in supporting smart city projects. Nevertheless, a clear procedural approach of the knowledge transfer between universities and smart cities has not been described or tested, yet. To address this research gap, this paper will present a reference model, which can be used as a guideline. Traditionally, the role of universities is described by its missions to teach, to conduct research and to share new findings with its stakeholders. While concepts like the 'Quintuple Helix' and 'Third Mission' try to describe the role of universities as key players in innovation projects, only few studies describe their role specifically for smart city projects. Therefore, this article will propose a structured, procedural approach for collaboration and knowledge transfer between universities and smart cities with an adaptive reference model. Due to its flexible architecture, the adaptive reference model facilitates efficient and effective knowledge transfer between universities and external partners, in this case with the stakeholders involved in smart city projects. © 2021 IEEE.

There is a strong desire from governments worldwide to digitalize their processes and to provide them for their citizens in an online format. Especially in the last view years, the SARS-COV-2 pandemic has amplified this desire, as during lock downs people were unable to visit their local government building. While there is a strong desire, some countries have struggled to provide online services to their citizens. Especially on the regional and local community level, the German government structures are just starting out to implement these processes. As these processes tend to become quite complex, this paper proposes to use adaptive process models in order make the process more clear for the ordinary citizen. To this case a short prototype on how an adaptive process model can be realized for applying for a building permit. This prototype uses a set of parameters to modify BPMN models in order to extract variants. The prototype is realized with the ADAMO Modeling tool. © 2023 IEEE.
