To deal with the demanding goals of the restricted Diesel emission legislation the focus in the application of exhaust after treatment systems to fulfill these strict requirements moves more and more to model based design, optimization and control. Against this background a nonlinear model predictive control (MPC) for an exhaust after treatment system consisting of a DOC (Diesel oxidation catalyst), a DPF (Diesel particulate filter) and a SCR (selective catalytic reduction) is proposed. Similar to standard ammonia control schemes also in this study the dosing amount is the only adjustable input variable. But in contrast to these usually simple feed forward dosing approaches in this proposal also information about the nonlinear temperature behavior and the storage effects of the SCR -included in a nonlinear SCR model - can be considered for the ammonia control. Based on these improved knowledge of the system a nonlinear model predictive controller, also applicable for real time tests on the engine, is applied for SCR control leading to promising results in simulation. © IFAC.

This paper addresses the autonomous overtaking problem using model predictive control. Accordingly, a mixed integer programming approach is put forward in which the surrounding vehicles are considered as moving obstacles. Unlike existing solutions using mixed integer programming, this paper presents more efficient formulations by reducing the number of binary variables, possibly enabling to accelerate the online computation. These algorithms are illustrated via a numerical example in the accurate vehicle simulator IPG CarMaker. © 2017 American Automatic control Council (AACC).

Complexity and nonlinearity of engines makes precise first principle engine models often difficult to obtain, as for instance for emissions. System identification is a well known possible alternative, successfully used in several automotive applications. In most cases system identification is concerned with the estimation of the unknown parameters of a known set of equations. Unfortunately, for many engine subsystems, there is no sufficiently precise or real time suitable model. This paper presents a sequential algorithm which allows to derive real time suitable models on line by a combination of model structure hypothesis of increasing complexity and an associated optimal input design and selection process. This paper introduces the method and shows its use both for a rather simple and a very difficult engine identification task, a dynamical model of the airpath of a Diesel engine and a dynamical model of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Saturation is a very common nonlinearity in control systems and may produce serious performance deterioration or even loss of stability. To cope with saturation, several anti-windup (AW) schemes have been developed over a long time. Unfortunately, they are based on the assumption that there is a static nonlinearity between the input and output of the saturating element, which, in very many situations, is not the case. Against this background we give sufficient conditions for stability of the observer based anti-windup to face unmodeled actuator dynamics and propose a method with an unknown input observer (UIO) to improve the performance of the robust AW in the case where the output of the actuator is not available. The effectiveness of the presented algorithm is demonstrated on the simple roll-yaw dynamics of a bank to turn missile and compared to another robust anti-windup approach.

Having accurate estimates for the parameter values of different vehicle components is crucial when it comes to the level of virtual testing of vehicle dynamics. Since these values are often not directly available, they need to be obtained from measurements. The most straightforward, but also most expensive way to obtain unknown values is by disassembling the car and by performing tests on the separate vehicle components. A solution that is often much cheaper is to infer estimates of the parameter values from measurements obtained by performing different driving maneuvers with the car. In this paper we show how methods from direct continuous time system identification (CT SysId) can be used to obtain accurate estimates for parameter values of the vehicle suspension system. The dynamic tests consist in exciting the suspension system by driving over one or several small obstacles and by recording the dynamic response of the car. CT Sysld is used to adapt the unknown parameter values of a tentative car model in order to best match the measured data. Evaluation of the approach using a multi-body simulation tool showed that the identified parameter values match well with the ones of the simulated vehicle suspension system. © 2016

Data based models are frequently and successfully used to monitor the operation state and detect faults in industrial plants. Deriving these models from data, however, can be quite difficult and unreliable, especially if data from actual operation have to be used, as the resulting optimization problem often becomes ill conditioned: available data may not contain sufficient information, in particular for continuous production systems which are often run for longer times under almost constant operating conditions. This paper presents a local steady state approach for such problems based on complexity reduction: data are pre-processed prior to the modeling phase to allow the build-up of reduced complexity models, thus replacing the original ill conditioned problem with a better conditioned one. A method is presented to extract the relevant information about the process from measurement data in such a way to guarantee that the resulting simplified models will retain the essential characteristics of the original system required to perform fault diagnosis successfully. This approach has been used in different industrial applications and has proved reliable and efficient. Copyright © 2006 by ASME.

Temperature control is very important for combustion engines as temperature is a critical factor both for chemical reactions and mechanical stresses. Traditionally, temperature control is performed by feedback of a global quantity, the coolant temperature, which however is a poor indicator of specific temperatures. The use of electrical pumps opens new possibilities for thermal control, in particular in terms of efficiency, but also of pollution, especially in the cold start phase. This paper, instead, shows that predictive control and the use of electrical coolant pumps allows to regulate specific temperatures - here as an example the cylinder head temperature. The experiment based results shown An impressive reduction of the thermal swing for the use of an electrical pump speed control using a model predictive approach. The work related has been performed in the framework of a Regins Interreg project in cooperation with a leading producer of coolant pumps.

This paper presents a new method for stochastic control of linear systems affected by bounded additive disturbances while guaranteeing probabilistic constraints. This method relies on a so-called convex lifting, which will be proven to guarantee the recursive feasibility and closed-loop stability by means of the convergence to a stochastic positively invariant set. Moreover, this design procedure only requires to solve a linear programming problem at each instant, therefore, the online computation is cheap. Finally, a numerical example will be considered to illustrate the method. © 2017 American Automatic control Council (AACC).

In this paper we present a mechatronical approach for bandwidth extension of a combustion engine test bench consisting of the reconfiguration of the mechanical design and the introduction of an adaptive feedforward like disturbance rejection scheme. The mechanical design of the test bench is improved by the use of a stiff shaft engine to dynamometer connection. This yields a shift of the resonance frequency of the test bench into the frequency range excited by the combustion oscillations and hence results in the need of a disturbance suppression algorithm. Therefore the repeatability of the almost periodic disturbance is exploited to predict an estimate of future values using an extended FIFO memory to compensate input delays. The algorithm is tested in simulation and furthermore applied to a real test bench. The experimental results will verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2010 AACC.

Robust Approximate Tracking of Matched Disturbance Non - control Affine systems

In this paper we discuss the problem of trajectory tracking of non control affine nonlinear systems. The main idea is to approximate the non control affine system by a special class of nonlinear systems, the so called extended Hammerstein systems (EHS). The control affine dynamic part of the EHS is computed such that an optimal control problem and therefore the robustifying feedback part of the tracking controller is already solved in the transformation process. Therefore no positive definite solution of the HJE needs to be computed since it gets a design parameter. The resulting system is then controlled by a trajectory tracking algorithm which ensures robustness against input disturbances and system uncertainties as well. A simulation example shows the efficiency of the proposed method.
