Combining two or more classifiers into an ensemble and fusing the individual classifier decisions to a consensus decision can improve the accuracy for a classification problem. The classification improvement of the fusion result depends on numerous factors, such as the data set, the combination scenario, the decision fusion algorithm, as well as the prediction accuracies and diversity of the multiple classifiers to be combined. Due to these factors, the best decision fusion algorithm for a given decision fusion problem cannot be generally determined in advance. In order to support the user in combining classifiers and to achieve the best possible fusion result, we propose the PUSION (Python Universal fuSION) framework, a novel generic and automated framework for decision fusion of classifiers. The framework includes 14 decision fusion algorithms and covers a total of eight different combination scenarios for both multi-class and multi-label classification problems. The introduced concept of AutoFusion detects the combination scenario for a given use case, automatically selects the applicable decision fusion algorithms and returns the decision fusion algorithm that leads to the best fusion result. The framework is evaluated with two real-world case studies in the field of fault diagnosis. In both case studies, the consensus decision of multiple classifiers and heterogeneous fault diagnosis methods significantly increased the overall classification accuracy. Our evaluation results show that our framework is of practical relevance and reliably finds the best performing decision fusion algorithm for a given combination task. © 2023 IEEE.

SCENE: Reasoning about Traffic Scenes using Heterogeneous Graph Neural Networks

Understanding traffic scenes requires considering heterogeneous information about dynamic agents and the static infrastructure. In this work we propose SCENE, a methodology to encode diverse traffic scenes in heterogeneous graphs and to reason about these graphs using a heterogeneous Graph Neural Network encoder and task-specific decoders. The heterogeneous graphs, whose structures are defined by an ontology, consist of different nodes with type-specific node features and different relations with type-specific edge features. In order to exploit all the information given by these graphs, we propose to use cascaded layers of graph convolution. The result is an encoding of the scene. Task-specific decoders can be applied to predict desired attributes of the scene. Extensive evaluation on two diverse binary node classification tasks show the main strength of this methodology: despite being generic, it even manages to outperform task-specific baselines. The further application of our methodology to the task of node classification in various knowledge graphs shows its transferability to other domains. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is a typical example for cooperative maneuvers of connected, automated vehicles. Safe operation of any such vehicle highly depends on information emitted by the surrounding vehicles as it is processed by the vehicle's longitudinal controller. This opens an attack surface affecting vehicle safety. This paper studies how CACC controllers can be protected against such attacks to ensure the safety of the vehicle and its passengers. This raises the question of how to mitigate injection of false data into the controller by attacks and other forms of vehicle misbehavior. Based on a literature analysis, this paper defines a new categorization for mitigation strategies, discussing their individual strengths, weaknesses and their potential for attack mitigation. This categorization can be used to derive novel ideas for mitigations, for example, an approach with a parameter-dependent reaction of the controller based on a suspiciousness parameter signaled by the Misbehavior Detection System (MDS). Through a simulation study, we show that this approach improves safety and efficiency of the platoon under attack but also identify a fundamental trade-off between these two design goals.

Thanks to development of information technology, the so-called virtual software environments offer wide possibilities for the estimation of time-space dynamical characteristics of energy systems, including modeling, control and design of distributed parameter systems. Based on these advances, we present a novel approach to control energy systems as lumped-input and distributed-parameter-output systems. An adaptive-predictive controller is deployed to control temperature fields to ensure optimal conditions for the desulphurization process in a coal-burning fluidized bed furnace, demonstrating the potential of the proposed methodology.

This paper reports on AnnieWAY, an autonomous vehicle that is capable of driving through urban scenarios and that has successfully entered the finals of the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge competition. After describing the main challenges imposed and the major hardware components, we outline the underlying software structure and focus on selected algorithms. Environmental perception mainly relies on a recent laser scanner which delivers both range and reflectivity measurements. While range measurements are used to provide 3D scene geometry, measuring reflectivity allows for robust lane marker detection. Mission and maneuver planning is conducted using a concurrent hierarchical state machine that generates behavior in accordance with California traffic laws. We conclude with a report of the results achieved during the competition. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In this paper, advanced engineering methods for modeling and discrete-time control of distributed parameter systems are presented. The dynamics of these systems is modeled by means of numerical structures defined on complex-shape 3D definition domains, similarly to a vast majority of engineering analysis and software simulation tools, which are heavily utilized among the engineering community for modeling and simulation of continuum mechanics systems. Inspired by a powerful capability of these numerical software packages along with the wide acceptance and utilization of Matlab/Simulink as a control systems design environment, the package distributed parameter systems blockset for Matlab & Simulink is used for modeling and simulation of a closed-loop feedback control system. In this paper, heating of a complex-shape 3D body is presented as a practical example of a methodology stated in the text. The techniques offered are completed by an user-friendly Web service tool, suitable for interactive solution of modeling and control problems of distributed parameter systems via Internet.

Temperature measurement is crucial for many industrial processes and monitoring tasks. Most of these measurement tasks can be carried out using conventional electric temperature sensors, but with limitations. Particularly under harsh conditions, fibre optic temperature sensors show their advantages over conventional instrumentation. Three common principles of fibre optic temperature measurement are exemplarily examined: fibre Bragg gratings, Raman scattering and interferometric point sensors. Their working principles along with recent findings and applications of the sensing concepts are presented. So far their application is still limited to niche markets but with decreasing system prices fibre optic temperature sensing has great potential for further growth.

As wind turbines are increasing both in number and in height, they are exposed to a major threat in form of lightning strikes. The protection of these structures from the effects of lightning is an important issue in today's wind turbine development. However, as lightning is random in nature, a complete protection against its damages is not achievable. The presented method for lightning impact localization and classification using a fiber optic current sensor network helps to detect damages caused by lightning and to monitor the blades. The system is connected to the wind turbine control and monitoring system. © 2006 IEEE.
