Web programming courses typically contain the 'how to implement functionality' of developing web applications, and writing a simple one is not very difficult. But this leads to lots of security problems, as therefore such applications are commonly very insecure, which is not only a problem for the site itself but also for others, e.g. visitors (distributing malware) or third parties (using the servers as source/amplification for attacks). Because of this it is very important to additionally learn how to implement web applications in a secure way. This paper presents a system to support such learning, based on an individual and autonomous approach. It consists of a webserver with numerous simple applications, each exemplifying a single specific class of security problems together with explanatory material for discovering such a problem and how to prevent it. © 2013 IEEE.

The main source of information in most adaptive hypermedia systems are server monitored events such as page visits and link selections. One drawback of this approach is that pages are treated as "monolithic" entities, since the system cannot determine what portions may have drawn the user's attention. Departing from this model, the work described here demonstrates that client-side monitoring and interpretation of users' interactive behavior (such as mouse moves, clicks and scrolling) allows for detailed and significantly accurate predictions on what sections of a page have been looked at. More specifically, this paper provides a detailed description of an algorithm developed to predict which paragraphs of text in a hypertext document have been read, and to which extent. It also describes the user study, involving eye-tracking for baseline comparison, that served as the basis for the algorithm.

Security is an important issue in E-Learning and encompasses privacy and copyright. In online courses both are difficult to achieve, as the interaction and the material is typically located on (semi-) public webpages. Often it is desirable in web-based E-Learning platforms to protect such webpages against information extraction, deep linking, printing, or other actions. Such possible protection aims are explained with the parties interested in subverting them. Afterwards protection measures to implement these aims are listed and assessed according to their “strength”: Are they trivial (no special knowledge or equipment), simple, medium, or complex (special tools, insider knowledge, or complex actions required) to defeat.

This paper, the third in a series, completes the presentation of a proposed set of modifications and extensions to the IMS Learning Design specification with the goal of enabling better support for adaptivity in collaborative learning settings. The extensions presented here target advanced adaptation features that build upon previous work and include: adapting control flows, controlling adaptations on a meta-level, human involvement in adaptation decisions, “transactional” action processing, loops and branches for controlling action execution, declaration of re-usable action sequences and complex expressions, and mechanisms for exception handling.

The IMS Learning Design specification, a widely known language for modelling collaboration scripts, has been criticized for a number of shortcomings and general lack of support for comprehensive adaptation features. We propose concrete extensions to the specification, aiming to alleviate deficiencies by specifically addressing (group) collaboration contexts, flexible service specification, fine-grained event handling and a wide range of adaptive interventions to support learners.

Mobile agent is a suitable paradigm to collect information from multiple sites in a distributed environment. As compare to other technologies, mobile agents can be used beneficially for Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) and to measure power quality information at each energy meter. Since meter contains embedded system, so the choice of agent platform for such an application is very important. This article investigates different methods from literature that use mobile agent paradigm for AMR process. It proposes a method that reduces the total security computation cost which is incurred in AMR process. In this method, energy meters are organized in the form of a group based upon the geographical location. In such one location energy meters perform their jobs under a security manager. In this method, the concept of local mobile agent is proposed to avoid the visit of external mobile agent to energy meters directly. Local mobile agent carries the acceptable queries from security manager and visits energy meters. This article uses mathematical modeling to represent the security computation cost incurred by each method from literature and compare it with the propose method. It is concluded that the proposed mechanism reduces the security computation cost considerably, compared to other methods.

Traditionally, user modeling in adaptive hypermedia systems is based upon monitoring requests of resources on the server. This information, however, is relatively vague and may lead to ambiguous or uncertain conclusions. One approach to improve granularity and accuracy in user models is monitoring "client-side" user interactions in the browser. Despite their steadily growing importance, especially along with the emergence of Web 2.0 paradigms, up to now such interactions are hardly being monitored. This paper shows how, by means of Web 2.0 technologies, additional information on user interactions can be retrieved, and discusses the benefits of this approach for user models (like accuracy, granularity and immediate availability of data out of the request-response cycle) as well as for subsequent adaptations.

Traditional monitoring and user modeling techniques in adaptive hypermedia systems consider pages as atomic units although different sections may refer to different concepts. This has been mainly due to the fact that most user interactions being monitored referred to the request of a new document and there was too little activity information to differentiate between sections of a page. Client-side monitoring can provide additional information on user interactions inside the browser window and may relate them to areas within a document. A user study was carried out to show whether and how this data might be used to identify which parts of a page have been read.
