With global climate change and the progressing digitization of infrastructural projects, the BIM (Building Information Modeling)-method has become increasingly significant. For planning and managing BIM projects, GIS data is crucial, e.g., in the form of environmental data. Especially for large-scale infrastructure projects, integrating BIM models and GIS (Geographic Information System) data provides advantages. With an information-rich platform that aggregates geographic and infrastructural design information to provide geometric 3D visualization combined with semantic information, processing infrastructural projects can be simplified. Many integrated solutions require complex algorithms and additional manual work for converting and visualizing BIM models. This process potentially leads to the loss of model information or contradictory data. In addition, commercial software is required. We present a new approach for the BIM-GIS integration based on open-source frameworks. Various types of BIM and GIS files can be uploaded to the application. The files are unified in one 3D environment with absolute reference, for which the coordinate reference system of each file is temporarily converted to a user-definable coordinate reference system within the backend. The original files remain unchanged, so the application serves as a viewer and allows the user to view all geographical and infrastructural information. Furthermore, various tasks like coordinate transformation and geometric measurement can be performed. Besides the viewer functionality, the application enables users to annotate the data and provide feedback on the issues found in the BIM models. That allows various stakeholders to share their insights, which is crucial for managing infrastructural projects and seamlessly displaying BIM models and GIS data. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The imminence of terrorist activities and the necessity of the maximum possible disaster preparedness in the sense of indoor-navigation support have been brought to evidence by several catastrophes, e.g., the fire at Istanbul Airport in May 2006 or the terror attacks on the London Underground on July 7, 2005. Since 2001 ten terror attacks have been thwarted only in Great Britain. For that reason the aim of the presented research project is to develop a solution for response and recovery to support rescuers in finding the shortest way within a public building and provide them with important information in their particular spa-tial context. Existing building information models (BIM) are used for displaying plans on mobile devices and for routing purposes. The indoor navigation system is based on wireless LAN (WLAN), ultra-wide-band (UWB), and radio frequency identification (RFID). These technologies are described in detail and an overview on data formats which are used to retrieve building data out of the BIM for generating routing networks is given.

The terror attacks of September 11th, 2001 in New York and March 11th, 2004 in Madrid have brought the imminence of terroristic activities and the necessity of the maximum possible assistance to evidence. For that reason the aim of the Research- Project "Context Sensitive Emergency-Navigation-System" is to develop a solution to support rescuers in finding the shortest way within a public building and provide them with important information in their particular spatial context. The officer in charge will get a better overview over the operation. In cases of emergency rescue missions will be enhanced in a decisive way because of possibilities to locate persons in buildings. The indoor navigation system is based on Wireless LAN (WLAN) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). It will use existing components of the technical infrastructure. © 2007 civil-Comp Press.

As an elementary part of building projects, construction logistics encompasses planning, control and monitoring functions to ensure the flow of materials and people on the construction site. Furthermore, it includes the management of storage areas and site facility planning. Despite its importance, the implementation of construction logistics often does not occur systematically. In practice, the project phases in which its planning and implementation take place as well as the considered degrees of detail differ significantly depending on the project conditions, such as the projects’ complexity, involved stakeholders or the scope of the construction project. In this paper an approach is presented that facilitates a systematic and holistic planning of construction logistics over all project phases on basis of lean construction principles. To achieve this, the coordination of all domain-specific stakeholders (e. g. construction logistics planners, site managers, contractors) is essential. As a work basis, construction logistics planners can create a specific digital construction logistics model (CLM) derived from the digital architectural model. This CLM can be used to schedule deliveries and storage areas, as well as logistics related information (e.g., delivery dates, storage areas, escape routes, waste collection points or construction site equipment elements). Construction logistics has to be generally accepted as an own domain-specific role during and especially in the beginning of construction projects to ensure the regarding of all necessary processes and requirements towards the construction logistics. © ISARC 2018 - 35th International Symposium on Automation and Robotics in Construction and International AEC/FM Hackathon: The Future of Building Things. With an increase to the availability of open data, the potential to leverage it for emergency response and disaster management has so far seen seldom use in Germany. While some modern technologies have found their place in existing workflows, open data and related services are rarely utilized. Due to varying standards and approaches in the federal system, public sector as well as community data sources often cannot be easily integrated. As such, an adaptable framework is proposed that outlines a way for practitioners to include these services via the OpenAPI specification without the need for programming or data science knowledge. Instead, the API documentation is parsed by an application offering various customization and configuration options during a mapping process enabling users to create their own interpretation of the data for beneficial use during disaster response efforts, resulting in a dashboard with map views and other visualizations. © 2023 the Author(s).

Complex engineering problems e.g. fluid-soil interaction for geotechnical problems, can be simulated using the finiteelement method by considering the different phases in the foundation ground. The constitutive equations are described by the theory of porous media, in which the interaction between the involved phases is considered. The averaging of the phases over a representive elementary volume is carried out using the concept of volumetric content. The complexity and size of three-dimensional engineering problems in the field of fluid-soil interaction makes the simulation numerically very costly, especially when the results are to be improved by fully adaptive methods. In this paper, we present a finite element formulation for the computation of a two-phase model for the fluid-soil interaction and the improvement of the results with the adaptive p-refinement as well as the parallel implementation in a distributed software system using mobile software agents. An example of practical interest confirms the suitability and the new possibilities arising from this modern approach. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd.

The goals of fire protection activities are to prevent fires, rescue people and ensure the effectiveness of firefighting. To achieve these goals for complex buildings, holistic fire protection concepts are developed which should take into account the special characteristics of each building. To ensure fire safety during the building lifecycle, a maintenance strategy is required. This includes recurring site inspections by experts, especially when a building needs to be refurbished or in the context of a technical due diligence during real estate transactions. If a malfunction of a fire safety element is detected in the context of these inspections, this is called a fire protection deficiency. These deficiencies decrease the fire safety rating of the building, increase the risk level, and result in deferred maintenance costs. For the analysis of the fire risk level and for risk comparisons between buildings and fire protection concepts, different techniques and approaches are available and are summarized under the term risk methods. A problem during this process is that findings and results from risk assessments are difficult to bring together with the real building. Information of the influence of individual fire safety deficiencies (technical, structural fire protection elements/components) on the risk level of the whole building and the associated repair and replacement costs are not directly related. This relationship must be associated in the expert's mind based on different documents. To overcome these limitations and to support the planning of deferred maintenance tasks, the goal of the presented approach is to visualize all required information within a BIM environment. © ASCE 2014.

Process-orientation is an important approach for the support and the coordination of planning processes in civil engineering. Process-orientation relies on a comprehensive and consistent process model. The Petri Net theory provides some significant benefits for the application on process modeling, -analysis and -runtime control. This contribution outlines the basic idea of process-orientation and presents the goals of process modeling in civil engineering. Then a Petri Net-based process model for civil engineering processes is presented and the corresponding reference implementation ProMiSE (Process Modeling in Structural engineering) is introduced. ProMiSE is a Java-based software tool for process modeling, -analysis and -control with network communication mechanisms based on the WebService technology.

Building design in civil engineering is characterized by the cooperation of experts in multiple disciplines. The close cooperation of engineers is the basis of a high product quality, short development periods and a minimum of investment costs. In contrast to most other design fields the development process in building design is characterized by the design of unique copies. For each building the engineers have to create a new fire protection model. As a result of huge fire disasters fire protection engineering is one of the central aspects for administrative authorities in the process of licensing the building design. Optimal conditions for the rescue of persons in case of fire only can be established, if the fire protection engineering conditions are created early in the planning process. The consistent realization of the fire protection model in all details has high demands on the communication and collaboration of the involved engineers and the corresponding building models. To preserve the related design models consistent to each other and compatible with the rules of fire protection engineering is a complex task. This leads to high demands on the semantic structure of communication, collaboration and building models. In addition, regulations and guidelines vary according to the building location, so the relevant rules must be integrated dynamically into the planning process. This paper covers the integration of engineers and design models into a cooperation network on the basis of mobile agents. Distributed models of architectural design, structural planning and fire protection engineering are supported. These can be accessed by mobile agents for information retrieval and for processing tasks. Agents which are enabled to check-up the distributed design models with the knowledge base of the fire protection regulations are provided to all planners. Thereby, the planners are supported to check-up their planning for accordance with the fire protection requirements.

The comprehensive modelling of soil-structure interaction requires three-dimensional dynamic design systems, which capture the changes that occur on the geotechnical components during the construction progress. The powerful generation and administration of the complex time-dependent geotechnical model need holistic computational tools for the management, the visualization and the proof of the engineering system. The system introduced allows a time-dependent management of the individual stages of the construction by a dynamic model in consideration of the ground properties, the geotechnical construction elements and the construction processes. An automatic mesh generation enables the generation of hexahedron meshes for the finite-element representation. The implementation of the system was achieved using object oriented modelling techniques and implementation in C++. © 2004 ASCE.
