One of the major aims in computer-aided engineering is to assist the planners in communication and collaboration during the building planning process. Since model-based planning is becoming widely accepted in the building industry, we assume that planners are working on partial models stored in distributed and heterogeneous model databases. A main goal of this project is to provide the engineers with an integrated view on these heterogeneous models. To realize this, two levels of integration have to be considered: the access level integration and the semantic level integration. In the presented project, the problem of access level integration is approached by software agents. However, in this context the core problem is the inconsistent semantics of the heterogeneous building model. Thus, this paper focuses on the semantic level integration. Based on an analysis of different types of heterogeneity a method for semantic integration of building model data in civil engineering is presented on the example of fire protection engineering. To provide fire protection engineers with an integrated transparent view, an ontology-based approach has been developed. The problems of distribution and heterogeneity are approached by different solution layers, following the principle of separation of concerns. By those means, the integration effort can be reduced effectively and resources can be integrated flexibly into network-based building project organizations. © 2007 American Society of civil Engineers.

To enhance the resolution of numerically simulated flowfields, grid adaptivity is vitally important. Further, to afford complete flexibility in the spatial discretisation of the flow domain both structured, unstructured and combinations of grid types are likely to be required. Hence, the development of grid adaptivity techniques for general grids is important. This paper discusses adaptivity achieved through point enrichment, point derefinement and point movement applied on general grids. A flexible data structure is described together with suitable strategies for adaptively refining a computational grid. Applications are presented of adaptive grid refinement for two-dimensional compressible flow simulation.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF NEARLY ORTHOGONAL MULTIBLOCK GRIDS FOR COMPRESSIBLE FLOW SIMULATION

A method is described whereby structured multiblock meshes can be constructed from the solution of elliptic partial differential equations and which possess the property of orthogonality close to boundaries and near orthogonality within the domain. To construct grids for viscous flow simulations which have appropriate point distributions close to solid boundaries these grids are used with point redistribution formulations. The result is high-quality grids for use with both inviscid and viscous flow simulation algorithms. Examples using the approach are given, and these include grids for single and multicomponent aerofoils and bluff bodies.

A kinetic flux-vector-splitting method has been used to solve the Euler equations for inviscid, compressible flow on unstructured grids. This method is derived from the Boltzmann equation and is an upwind, cell-centred, finite volume scheme with an explicit time-stepping procedure. The Delaunay triangulation has been used to generate the grids. The approach is demonstrated for three flow field simulations, namely the subsonic flow over a two-component high-lift aerofoil, the transonic flow over an aerofoil and the supersonic flow in a channel.

In the AEC sector, energy performance targets of buildings continuously increase for contributing to reduce carbon dioxide. This is usually done on building level, but the focus continuously shifts to larger scales such as neighborhoods, e.g. for identifying buildings with the most retrofitting potential. For this, low detailed GIS models can serve as a basis for energy simulations and are broadly available. However, neighborhood energy simulations hold many challenges, such as the lack of accurate and sufficient data to perform reliable simulations. Information such as window positions or thermal parameters of the building elements can thereby help to increase the quality of the energy simulation results. Therefore, in this paper, challenges of data collection are presented and discussed. To enable users to find a trade-off between accuracy and reliability of a neighborhood simulation and the effort to provide this data, the authors developed the concept of the Neighborhood Model States (NMS). Furthermore, occurring challenges in enriching the GIS model for each NMS are discussed on the example of buildings from the UBC campus. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A Method for the Application of numerical Simulations during Firefighting Operations Using Pre-Simulated, Model-Based Fire Scenarios

The spread of fire and smoke during a fire incident plays a crucial role in rescuing people from the burning building. So it is important for the decision makers (the head of rescue staff) to get a prediction about the spread of fire inside the building through computational techniques like numerical fire simulations. But these techniques require advanced mathematical knowledge and are very time consuming. This paper presents a new method which employs a set of pre-simulated and model-based scenarios to find the closest one to the real fire and present its results to the decision makers. For this purpose, we shift the performance consuming numerical fire simulations into a former phase by integration of these simulations into the planning process of the building. This is realized by enhancing the methods of Building Information Modeling (BIM). To provide the fire simulation results during a real case, our new concept includes a scenario database where all simulated fire scenarios will be collected. In a real case, a special search algorithm will go through this database to find the closest pre-simulated fire scenario to the real fire on the basis of reported information from the burning building.

We present a new methodology to statistically determine the net present value(NPV)and internal rate of return(IRR)as financial estimators of shale gas *** method allows us to forecast,in a fully probabilistic setting,financial performance risk and to understand the importance of the different factors that impact *** methodology developed in this study combines,through Monte Carlo simulation,the computational modeling of gas production from shale gas wells with a stochastic simulation of gas price as a geometric Brownian motion(GMB).To illustrate the methodology's validity,we apply it to an analysis of investments in shale gas *** results show that gas price volatility is a key variable in the performance of an investment of this type,in such a way that at high volatilities,the potential return on an investment in shale gas increases significantly,but so do the risks of economic *** finding is consistent with the history of shale gas operations in which huge investment successes coexist with unexpected investment failures.

An integrative process model for cooperation support in civil engineering

Planning processes in civil engineering are highly complex and characterised by a great number of participants and heterogeneous, distributed planning resources in terms of software methods, models and means of communication. The interaction, communication and information exchange between planning participants must be organised in computer networks. This paper presents an integrative process model to support cooperation in distributed planning processes in civil engineering, taking fire protection planning as an example. Firstly, the integrative process model consists of Petri-Nets to model the processes and to support the coordination between the participants during the planning process. Secondly, it consist of agents providing resources und methods to process the technical information within the modelled processes. Thirdly, Petri-Nets are used to model the agent migration and the agent interaction.

In Germany about eighteen fire fighters lose their lives and more than 16.000 accidents happen on duty every year. One of the main problems is the orientation in complex buildings during operations, especially if rooms are full of smoke. Route cards (printed on paper) to find fire detectors in buildings, are means, which often do not meet all requirements with regard to orientation and up-to-datedness. The aim of the presented research project “Context Sensitive Indoor-Emergency-Navigation-System for Complex Buildings” is to develop a solution for response and recovery to support rescuers in finding the shortest way within a complex building. Existing building models are exported and used for displaying plans on mobile devices and for routing purposes. The indoor navigation is based on Wireless LAN, Ultra-Wide-Band and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).

In this contribution we describe a numerical method based on the application of a meshfree interpolation technique (Moving Least Squares (MLS)), for the development of a higher-order finite volume discretization useful on structured and unstructured grids. With this procedure it is possible to build a higher-order scheme in which the computation of the derivatives is performed in a truly threedimensional way. We use a MLS approach to compute the successive derivatives needed for the approximation of variables at element interfaces using Taylor series. Due to the use of cubic (or higher) reconstructions with the MLS technique, viscous fluxes are also approximated with higher-order accuracy and can be directly computed at edges. The higher-order accuracy achieved by this method makes it suitable for aeroacoustics problems and DNS and LES of turbulent flows. One of the advantages of the use of the meshfree method on a finite volume framework is that it is possible to exploit all the shock capturing techniques developed for finite volume methods, allowing the computation of compressible flows. Moreover, we also present the application of this interpolation technique to shock detection. We make use of its connection with wavelets, and develop a technique we believe superior to traditional shock capturing methods. This application could be included in a very natural way in the computations with the method presented herein.
