Simulation is a common technique for the evaluation of new approaches and protocols in networked systems and provides many ***,it is also well known that the relevance of the simulation results for real-world applications depends on the various models which are used within the simulation,e.g.,for the characteristics of the radio *** this paper,we introduce the Extended Multipath Raytracing Model,an extension to the ray-tracing radio medium available in Cooja,to improve the modelling of wireless links in simulated Wireless Sensor *** extension allows the simulation of environmental influences onto links on a per node basis,allowing the analysis of various effects observed in experiments in a virtual ***,the packet-based modelling of transmission errors is extended to provide the simulation of bit errors,allowing new usage scenarios,like the simulation of error detection and Forward Error Correction codes in Cooja.

While success stories are likely to be reported, failures are rarely published - even if a lot can be learned from them. In this paper we present experiences and findings from our testbed and WSN deployments. Our PotatoNet has been deployed on an agricultural area in 2015 to perform several WSN outdoor experiments while measuring the stress of potato crops. It was extended a year later by the PotatoMesh, a solar panel-based mesh network of nodes. Throughout both of these deployments we experienced problems and failures at different stages of the projects. We derive key problems and some important concepts when it comes to outdoor WSN deployments.

High performance internetworking units, such as routers and bridges are key building blocks of current and emerging high performance networks. The aggregate data rate flowing through a router can be in the range of gigabits per second. In order to keep up with very high data rates, processing within the internetworking unit needs to be optimized. This paper concentrates on routing table look up. It presents a design for a routing table look up for gigabit routers running the new version of IP, EPv6. The proposed approach, HeaRT, is viewed as the core engine of an IM router. © 1997 IEEE.

Todays FPGA technology allows reconfigurable hardware to be integrated into standard PC hardware. A hardware like this allows for on-the-fly reconfigurable hardware. It is possible to remove and insert complete subsystems just by reinitializing the configurable components. These systems make new demands on software that often can't be fulfilled by the classical device driver concept used in todays operating systems. This paper presents a flexible and on-the-fly reconfigurable hardware subsystem for interworking systems. Furthermore, a software integration for fast and efficient reconfiguration of the hardware is introduced. It provides a flexible integration into a Unix environment. © 1999 IEEE.

We study the feasibility of utilising the RF transceiver of a mobile device to establish some kind of situation awareness. Our results show that the analysis of channel characteristics can provide additional and sufficiently accurate context information. This situation awareness is cheap in the sense that it can be obtained from already ongoing communication in a network of nodes. In this paper we present results from a case study with several USRP software radios. We show how the presence, position and activity of persons in a room can be obtained exclusively from channel measurements. © 2011 IEEE.

Delay-Tolerant networks exhibit highly asynchronous connections often routed over many mobile hops before reaching its intended destination. The Bundle Security Protocol has been standardized providing properties such as authenticity, integrity, and confidentiality of bundles using traditional Public-Key Cryptography. Other protocols based on Identity-Based Cryptography have been proposed to reduce the key distribution overhead. However, in both schemes, secret keys are usually valid for several months. Thus, a secret key extracted from a compromised node allows for decryption of past communications since its creation. We solve this problem and propose the first forward secure protocol for Delay-Tolerant Networking. For this, we apply the Puncturable Encryption construction designed by Green and Miers, integrate it into the Bundle Security Protocol and adapt its parameters for different highly asynchronous scenarios. Finally, we provide performance measurements and discuss their impact. © 2017 Association tor Computing Machinery.

Intelligent Transportation systems that rely on Vehicle-to-Cloud communications are emerging. Of particular interest to us is the question how drivers can securely register their vehicle with cloud services and deploy keys for securing vehicular communications. We therefore present a secure smartphone-based registration and key deployment process for these applications. We combine an adapted OAuth flow for Smartphone-to-Cloud communications with a novel key deployment mechanism for Public Key Infrastructures in vehicular networks. The primary contributions of the proposed key deployment process are a high degree of independence from central authorities and feasible security audits due to an open protocol design. As an instance of future Intelligent Transportation System applications that facilitate Vehicle-to-Cloud communications, we utilize the V-Charge project as a running example to discuss potential attack scenarios and their mitigations. © 2013 ACM.

The Internet is undergoing changes of its traffic mix, with the IP-based interactive multimedia applications gaining momentum. According to studies, UDP-based multimedia traffic has in recent years risen to above 25% of the overall Internet traffic volume, as compared to only 5% a decade ago. To these delay sensitive real-time interactive multimedia applications, out of delay boundary packets are usually obsolete. However the current Internet Protocol lacks a way to control the lifetime of the packets effectively. In this paper, we propose the Explicit Delay Control (EDC) as a viable packet lifetime control mechanism designed for such purpose. It uses an embedded Maximum Tolerable Delay (MTD) field in an IPv4 option. The value of MTD is determined by taking the application specific delay bound, measured round-trip-time, and the estimations of the path propagation delay and transmission delay into account. At each network node, the MTD is deducted by the singlehop delay. Packets that expire their lifetime are discarded and non-congestion related delay losses are signaled to the sender to reduce inaccuracy in delay estimations and to adapt to path changes. We implemented EDC in the Linux kernel. Our evaluation has shown that EDC can ensure the "legality" of the packets, reduce the waste of bandwidth and processing time in the networks, and help to alleviate congestions. © 2006 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

We assume we are given a set of points that have the property that their Voronoi diagram - restricted to some suitable bounding box - consists of only fat cells. We call such points well-spaced points. We give a linear-sized data structure for finding the nearest neighbor to a query point among well-spaced points in O(log n) time. We further show how to extend the results to higher dimensions. Finally, we show how to find the Voronoi diagram of these points in O(nlogn) time in 3 dimensions. © 2010 IEEE.

Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) approaches based on the Bundle Protocol are commonly used within mobile IP based networks. Instead of being isolated applications, the Internet is often used to provide additional services or to route through other parts of the DTN network. A major drawback is that current DTN routing and discovery protocols are not generally applicable in the Internet as there is no common protocol to resolve DTN node names to convergence layer addresses outside a local network. We present Nasdi, an approach based on Distributed Hash Tables which can support naming, routing, notifications and service discovery in a heterogeneous DTN linked by the Internet. We present the architecture and initial evaluations of a Nasdi prototype system we built for the IBR-DTN software. © 2013 ICST institute for computer Science, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.
