Symbolic execution is an SMT-based software verification and testing technique. Symbolic execution requires tracking performed computations during software simulation to reason about branches in the software under test. The prevailing approach on symbolic execution of binary code tracks computations by transforming the code to be tested to an architecture-independent intermediate representation (IR) and then symbolically executes this IR. However, the resulting IR must be semantically equivalent to the binary code, making this process complex and error-prone. The semantics of the binary code are specified by the targeted instruction set architecture (ISA), commonly given in natural language and requiring a manual implementation of the transformation to an IR. In recent years, the use of formal languages to describe ISA semantics in a machine-readable way has gained increased popularity. We investigate the utilization of such formal semantics for symbolic execution of binary code, achieving an accurate representation of instruction semantics. We present a prototype for the RISC-V ISA and conduct a case study to demonstrate that it can be easily extended to additional instructions. Furthermore, we perform an experimental comparison with prior work which resulted in the discovery of five previously unknown bugs in the ISA implementation of the popular IR-based symbolic executor angr. Reliability of the Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication is one of the key factors towards ensuring large-scale deployment of the cooperative vehicular systems. From the communication perspective, urban intersection scenarios can be challenging due to a frequent absence of line-of-sight (LOS) conditions. It is often combined with highly dense network conditions due to high amount of traffic lights, fast route changes and stop-and-go traffic. In this paper, we evaluate the reliability of V2V applications at urban intersections in congested network conditions. We demonstrate that closed intersection topology is the most favorable when compared to half-opened and opened topologies and that the degradation distance requirement is more challenging to fulfill than the reliable communication range requirement.

GAL, the Lower Saxony Research Network Design of Environments for Ageing, investigates how information and communication technology can provide for better environments for ageing. This paper describes a service oriented middleware platform for Ambient Assisted Living and its use in a number of different assistive systems developed in the GAL project: personal activity and household assistant, monitoring of preventive and rehabilitation sports, sensor-based activity determination, and sensor-based fall prevention and recognition. Besides a detailed description of the middleware platform and its elements and interfaces, central infrastructure services and their particularly applications in the different use cases are presented.

In Formula Student (FS) / Formula SAE (FSAE) competitions students build single seat formula race-cars with which they compete against teams from all over the world. Despite static disciplines such as cost reports, teams compete in multiple dynamic disciplines driving the car. An important set of rules deals with the necessary prerequisites for a driver to enter a discipline and the maximum amount of runs each registered driver is allowed to drive. So far these rules have not been enforced adequately by most international events. In this paper we present the design and implementation of a prototype system using Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) and Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) technology to document and check compliance with the rules. We share experience gained during a prototype trial during the Formula Student Germany 2013 event.

Ballistocardiography (BCG) describes the measurement and analysis of ballistic forces that are evoked by the heart's movement and propagated to the surface of the body. Although there are several research groups focusing on BCG, the understanding on general BCG signals is still limited, as existing studies only consider a small number of subjects and insufficient measurement setups. This paper presents first results of our ongoing study to collect BCG ground-truth data. We present a custom hardware implementation for both, high data quality and simultaneous ECG reference measurement. In a large-scale study we currently collected more than 10 hours of BCG data from 34 subjects including BCG in resting position as well as under physical stress. In addition, related biometric data are collected to enable comprehensive investigations. We plan to provide access to the data for interested researchers.

The 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge afforded the golden opportunity for the Technische Universität Braunschweig to demonstrate its abilities to develop an autonomously driving vehicle to compete with the world's best competitors. After several stages of qualification, our team CarOLO qualified early for the DARPA Urban Challenge Final Event and was among only eleven teams from initially 89 competitors to compete in the final. We had the ability to work together in a large group of experts, each contributing his expertise in his discipline, and significant organisational, financial and technical support by local sponsors who helped us to become the best non-US team. In this report, we describe the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge, our contribution "Caroline", the technology and algorithms along with her performance in the DARPA Urban Challenge Final Event on November 3, 2007. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Autonomous robots can be used to perform reconnaissance missions in disaster scenarios when the safety of humans cannot be guaranteed. We developed an interdisciplinary approach to autonomous team-based exploration in such settings. The introduced system architecture consists of robust communication and reactive task allocation, built upon a research robot platform. A team of robots autonomously executes exploration tasks deploying a long-term sensor network. All robots and sensors are linked through the so-called distributed common information model (dCIM), which is the global knowledge base of our system. It enables the robots to share a unified environment model and to perform dynamic task scheduling. All key soft-and hardware elements presented in this paper have been prototypically implemented and tested.

The introduction of Vehicle-to-X (V2X) communication enhances the perception range of a vehicle significantly. The technology, however, is subjected to the network effect: a minimum number of communication partners need to be within range, in order for V2X applications to work. Taking current vehicle replacement rates on the market into account, the time of market introduction is critical, as early adopters are likely not to profit from the technology, whilst having to account for the development costs. This contribution picks up the concept of collective perception, in which vehicles share their information gathered by their local perception sensors about objects in their vicinity. This work extends our earlier research by introducing a new message format, the Environmental Perception Message (EPM) for exchanging sensor information. Additionally, a high-level data fusion framework is presented, which separates the fusion process of local sensor data and V2X information, along with the required coordinate transformations for representing another vehicle's sensor information in the recipient's reference frame. We also realized the introduced framework and message in two automated vehicles and provide a performance analysis in an obstacle avoidance scenario for these vehicles on a race track. Since the vehicles share their sensor data with each other, the resulting available reaction time for avoiding the obstacle on the track increases significantly.

Many years of research on dependable, fault-tolerant software systems yielded many tool implementations for vulnerability analysis and experimental validation of resilience measures. We identify two disjoint classes of fault-injection (FI) experiment tools in the field, and argue that both are plagued by inherent deficiencies, such as insufficient target state access, little or no means to switch to another target system, and non-reusable experiment code. In this article, we present a novel design approach for a FI infrastructure that aims at combining the strengths of both classes. Our Fail* experiment framework provides carefully-chosen abstractions simplifying both the implementation of different simulator/hardware target backends and the reuse of experiment code, while retaining the ability for deep targetstate access for specialized FI experiments. An exemplary report on first experiences with a prototype implementation based on existing x86 and ARM simulators demonstrates the tool's versatility. © 2012 Gesellschaft fuer Informatk.

While for an automatic and autonomous indoor fall detection an enormous amount of different sensors is conceivable, for an outdoor fall detection only wearable sensors are applicable. For practical uses cases, it would be very beneficial if after a detected fall a medical alert is initiated. In indoor environments, a base station connected to a telephone line can handle these calls. On the road, this can be achieved by mobile phones or smartphones. In this paper we first estimate the suitability of several systems for an outdoor fall detection. Then, we propose a system for a mobile and stationary fall detection and alerting system. We implemented and evaluated this system, which is consisting of a smartphone and a wireless sensor node.
