Wireless networks are getting more and more important to industrial process monitoring in control. One of the key challenges in these domains is clock synchronization. Needed to be able to link data gathered on different devices in the network. More recently the idea of wireless closed loop controllers rose. With that even more precise clock synchronization is needed. In this paper we propose a protocol capable of sub-microsecond synchronization and clock drift compensation. The proposed protocol is inspired by the widely used PTP but was optimized for wireless networks. Our real world evaluation indicates, that clock drift is a serious challenge in networks utilizing modern microcontrollers. We also show that our approach is capable of mitigating that drift to reach a competitive degree of synchronicity. © 2017 IEEE.

Communication is crucial to the coordination and efficient operation of public transport systems. However, deployment of infrastructure based communication systems is expensive, esp. due to long-term operational costs. Delay tolerant vehicular networks are a promising alternative since only very few infrastructure elements are required. This paper presents a DTN routing algorithm for urban public transport systems which exploits the knowledge about system characteristics and node mobility to improve the routing performance. Various DTN routing schemes are compared with the presented algorithm. Moreover, the impact of disturbances on the routing performance is examined. © Tobias Pögel.

Wireless Sensor networks (WSN) now advance into areas where new scenarios and applications require WSNs to meet certain Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. To tackle these challenges, a routing approach has to consider limited energy supply of sensor nodes, dynamic network conditions as well as node mobility. This paper presents QoS-AODV6E, a routing scheme based on the Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol, which encompasses QoS and Energy-Awareness for mobile WSNs. Based on the reactive AODV routing protocol, QoS-AODV6E allows applications to specify QoS parameters and finds suitable routes that support their requirements. In order to prolong the lifetime of the network, QoS-AODV6E balances the energy consumption between different paths through the network based on the weakest node. We evaluate our implementation of QoS-AODV6E in Contiki using simulation and measurements. © 2010 IEEE.

We use features of the mobile radio channel in order to identify and classify situations and activities. We show that the pressure, position, count and activity of people can be identified based on the root mean square, signal to noise ratio and the average magnitude squared of a received radio signal. The situation awareness was demonstrated in case studies with software radios. CPSs are widely used in all sorts of applications ranging from industrial automation to search-and-rescue. So far, in these applications they work either isolated with a high mobility or operate in a static networks setup. If mobile CPSs work cooperatively, it is in applications with relaxed real-time requirements. To enable such cooperation also in hard real-time applications we present a scheduling approach that is able to adapt real-time schedules to the changes that happen in mobile networks. We present a Mixed Integer Linear Programming-model and a heuristic to generate schedules for those networks. One of the key challenges is that running applications must not be interrupted while the schedule is adapted. Therefore, the scheduling has to consider the delay and jitter boundaries, given by the application, while generating the adapted schedule. © 2020 IEEE.

Until now there exists no standardized or widely-used name resolution mechanism for Bundle Protocol based DTNs. In local IP based networks the IP Neighbor Discovery (IPND) protocol provides link-local discovery of DTN neighbors, however in the Internet there is no mechanism that maps Bundle Protocol addresses (EIDs) to Convergence Layer addresses. This seriously hampers connectivity in the DTNBone. In this paper we argue, that a DHT-based naming mechanism is a good fit for DTN networks. We show the advantages of using the existing DHT infrastructure from the BitTorrent file sharing network as a basis instead of rolling out a custom solution. We will present experiences and performance measures with a lightweight implementation of the proposed system that we began to distribute as integrated component of the IBR-DTN Bundle Protocol implementation. Electric vehicles must be easy to use to be accepted by customers and to be successful on the market. One important part of this is the need for comfortable charging and parking. Especially if the charging of a vehicle takes a certain amount of time, a good solution to simplify the life of the customer is necessary. The V-Charge project has the vision to provide a solution by combining autonomous valet parking with e-mobility, introducing improved parking and charging comfort to increase customer acceptance of electric vehicles. V-Charge proposes a solution for charging autonomous electric vehicles in parking places and efficiently using scarce charging resources. For the management of the overall system and the provided resources, a server back-end and a communication infrastructure are provided. In this paper, we present our design of a central server back-end that handles the assignment of free parking spots to autonomous electric vehicles and implements scheduling concepts for a coordinated charging strategy. A typical scenario of such a concept might be the automatic drop-off and recovery of a car in front of an airport terminal without taking care of parking or charging in person. © 2012 IEEE.

Backend services enable the large-scale aggregation of vehicle data. This Floating Car Data (FCD) can be used to detect traffic disturbances. Although today's vehicles are able to determine their position on a per-lane level, FCD is typically only used on a per-street level granularity. In this paper, we show that using the fleet-data from one Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) alone as the database (i. e., on a backend) is not sufficient to detect lane-level traffic phenomena, independent from the accuracy of the vehicle localization. We thus present a high-resolution telemetry service based on heterogeneous Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC). We introduce a holistic IVC simulation framework which we make publicly available and use it to experimentally verify the proposed telemetry service. Results show a significant leverage of IVC on both the resolution of FCD and the accuracy of detecting lane-level traffic phenomena. © 2016 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). For security reasons, many companies usually allow only strictly regulated communication, specific system configurations and predetermined software components. Therefore, often only communication over the HTTP protocol is possible, which operates by using a request-response approach. In this paper we present the design and evaluation of a convergence layer for our DTN implementation IBR-DTN using HTTP as underlying protocol. On the remote side we use a web server and a database for the connection management. Through the usage of long-polling we realize a bidirectional communication. In the evaluation, we show the results of bandwidth and latency measurements. © 2011 ACM.

The measurement of environmental data in city areas has become an important issue to municipalities due to several national, European and even international climate directives. However, fixed measurement stations are inflexible, cost-intensive and limited to monitoring environmental data in distinct key areas only. Large-scale data collection with a high spatial resolution requires mobile measurements, which are an active area of research but still offer many challenges.
