Delay- and Disruption-Tolerant networks (DTNs) are a suitable technology for many applications when the network suffers from intermittent connections and significant delays. However, the characteristics of a DTN make most traditional strategies of detecting attackers infeasible. In this paper, we propose a Misbehavior Detection System (MDS) to defend a DTN against blackhole and greyhole attackers without the need of an initial learning phase. We evaluate our method in two scenarios using different DTN routing protocols. We show that the proposed MDS has a fast reaction time and can efficiently detect evil nodes with varying drop probabilities under different scenarios yielding a high detection and low false positive rate while saving resources in the system. © institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2014.

Outdoor Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs) in Precision Farming scenarios need to satisfy at least three different requirements: low energy consumption, weather robustness and network communication. In this extended abstract we focus on the communication of WSNs in a Precision Farming scenario, consisting of a tractor with a field sprayer and a deployed outdoor WSN. Therefore, we introduce "PotatoScanner", a mobile WSN node which is able to function as data mule and, thus, extends the WSN with a Delay and Disruption Tolerant Wireless Sensor Network (DTWSN) component. PotatoScanner can measure the surface temperature of plants and is controlled via an Android application. Furthermore, it is able to track all occurring Delay and Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN) events and allows detailed analysis of the DTWSN. © 2017 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Large Minimum Redundancy Linear Arrays: Systematic Search of Perfect and Optimal Rulers Exploiting Parallel Processing

Minimum Redundancy Linear Arrays (MRLAs) are special linear arrays that provide the narrowest main lobe in the radiation pattern possible for a given number of antennas. We found that the calculation of MRLAs is the same as for the mathematical problem of perfect sparse rulers. Finding perfect rulers (or MRLAs) is a hard problem, as there is no proven mathematical rule to design them. They can only be found by constructing ruler candidates via an exhaustive search while ensuring that no ruler with less redundancy exists. We revisited the problem of sparse ruler construction and used two exhaustive search algorithms to compute longer rulers than previously published. Further, we present an approach to accelerate the execution by distributing the recursive search algorithms over multiple computers. Our compute cluster found perfect rulers with all lengths up to 244 in 443 years of combined CPU time. All found rulers are provided to the research community. Additionally, we confirm previously known Low Redundancy Linear Arrays being MRLAs. Our results show that larger perfect rulers do not always require equal or more marks (antennas) but can sometimes be constructed with fewer marks than the previous ruler. © 2020 IEEE.

Todays networks are characterized by heterogeneous environments. Various transmission techniques coexist and offer different bandwidths at different costs, Because of video conferences and similiar applications becoming more and more important this paper presents the architecture of the video communication system "XNetvideo ", which is sealable in terms of SNR {signal to noise ratio)-scaling, image size and frame rate. Xnetvideo is a tool for videotransmission over IP-networks and especially ATM, that was developed at our institute. The description of this architecture, and the discussion of implementation issues and performance results are the major topics of this contribution. Moreovel;a brief survey of existing tools and architectures in this area is given. © 1996 IEEE.

Mobile devices are gaining popularity and it is expected that the number of these devices will grow even more in the next few years. While very different types of mobile devices exist, it can be expected that most of them will have sooner or later sufficient processing and communication resources to be used as clients for distributed multi-player games. We expect that ad-hoc networks will be of particular interest for many game scenarios since clients which are in sufficiently close proximity are then able to communicate directly or via a limited number of hops without the need of further, externally provided infrastructure. In this paper we study problems that appear for games in ad-hoc networks and present an architecture designed to address and solve the identified problems. Usual game architectures follow one of two approaches: 1. A central server design where the server receives the state change events from the users, recalculates the overall state and distributes the changes in the game state to the players. 2. A completely distributed model where every player sends state changes directly to all the other players. However, we believe that both approaches have problems, especially for games in ad-hoc networks. We propose to introduce the concept of a 'Zone Server'. I.e., some players are elected as Zone Servers. Each Zone Server receives the state change of only a group of players. It also communicates with the others to propagate the game state changes to all the players. Issues we are addressing are the location of Zone Servers and the communication between players and Zone Servers. © 2003 ACM.

Many email and messaging applications on Android utilize the Intent API for sharing images, videos, and documents. Android standardizes Intents for sending and Intent Filters for receiving content. Instead of sending entire files, such as videos, via this API, only URIs are exchanged pointing to the actual storage position. In this paper we evaluate applications regarding a security vulnerability allowing privilege escalation and data leakage, which is related to the handling of URIs using the file scheme. We analyze a vulnerability called Surreptitious Sharing and present two scenarios showing how it can be exploited in practice. Based on these scenarios, 4 email and 8 messaging applications have been analyzed in detail. We found that 8 out of 12 applications are vulnerable. Guidelines how to properly handle file access on Android and a fix for the discussed vulnerability are attached. © 2016 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). All rights reserved.

We show that for any α > 1 there exists a deterministic distributed algorithm that finds a fractional graph colouring of length at most α(Δ + 1) in any graph in one synchronous communication round;here Δ is the maximum degree of the graph. The result is near-tight, as there are graphs in which the optimal solution has length Δ + 1. The result is, of course, too good to be true. The usual definitions of scheduling problems (fractional graph colouring, fractional domatic partition, etc.) in a distributed setting leave a loophole that can be exploited in the design of distributed algorithms: the size of the local output is not bounded. Our algorithm produces an output that seems to be perfectly good by the usual standards but it is impractical, as the schedule of each node consists of a very large number of short periods of activity. More generally, the algorithm shows that when we study distributed algorithms for scheduling problems, we can choose virtually any trade-off between the following three parameters: T, the running time of the algorithm, , the length of the schedule, and κ, the maximum number of periods of activity for a any single node. Here is the objective function of the optimisation problem, while κ captures the "subjective" quality of the solution. If we study, for example, bounded-degree graphs, we can trivially keep T and κ constant, at the cost of a large , or we can keep κ and constant, at the cost of a large T. Our algorithm shows that yet another trade-off is possible: we can keep T and constant at the cost of a large κ. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Many new distributed multimedia applications involve dynamic multiple participants, have stringent end-to-end delay requirement and consume large amount of network resources. In this paper, we propose a distributed delay-constrained dynamic multicast routing algorithm (DCDMR) to support these applications. DCDMR scales well because the source of the multicast tree needs only limited computation or may even not be involved in the route computation. When group membership changes, the existing multicast tree is perturbed as little as possible and the average resulting tree cost is very satisfactory. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.

Network management requires a lot of manual work. Due to ongoing growth of the Internet, more self-management is needed in order to deal with the growing complexity. Policy-based management is an approach to simplify management by the use of rules. Policy refinement, i.e. breaking down high-level policies to technical configurations is still a task that needs manual work. We propose an architecture that uses Web services and automatic Web services composition as a complementary technique to policy refinement in order to automate policy-based management.
