Antenna orientation is an often overlooked factor in radiobased localization. Our experience with phase-based ranging suggests that antenna orientation has an impact on measured distances. Therefore, we investigate the impact of antenna orientation on phase-based ranging in the 2.4 GHz ISM band. Four different antenna types are tested in an anechoic chamber. Our evaluation is conducted end-to-end; we do not compare antenna properties by measuring parameters via a vector network analyzer but compare the measured distance between two wireless sensor nodes. Our evaluation shows that some antenna types report varying distance results at different rotation angles while other types are hardly influenced at all.

The idea that devices in a distributed system share their resources is quite old. Recent research areas which continue to rely on this idea are opportunistic networks and participatory sensing. Substantial theoretical work regarding the design of incentive systems intended to encourage and sustain participation in such applications is available: While most of the existing work deals with technical implementations and the question how to make these systems fair and secure, not much thought has been given to the question what an acceptable and economically feasible incentive could be. In this work we implemented an incentive system for a smartphone-based Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) and performed a 1 month study where users tested and evaluated the system. Safety applications are envisioned to be the first Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) applications delivered to the mass market in the near future. In this paper, we address the question of achievable application-level reliability while operating over the Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) channel. We advocate, that this reliability is a cumulative metric, which combines the main application operational requirements bounded with network performance metrics. In this context, we focus on (i) required information freshness and communication range, as main communication performance requirements and (ii) path prediction error, as application operational requirement. We present a novel simulation approach towards quantifying these metrics based on MATLAB vehicle dynamics models coupled with a driver reaction model. The input data for the simulation study is obtained empirically through real world experiments. This allows us to achieve numerical results with high accuracy. Further, based on data gathered in extensive real world measurement campaigns, we assess application-level reliability under different realistic conditions and perform a feasibility analysis of various NLOS scenarios while showing their potential for future V2V applications on the example of the Intersection Collision Warning (ICW). Finally, we investigate whether the packet delivery ratio (PDR) is capable to capture application-level reliability adequately and compare it with the metrics proposed in this work.

Energy Harvesting is a solution for continued operation of WSNs without depending on batteries. This paper introduces REAPer, an adaptive energy harvester for microsources that can be configured and monitored by the supplied WSN node. We combine REAPer with an IdealVolting capable sensor node that can fully exploit the monitoring and control capabilities of REAPer. The efficiency and overhead of the REAPer harvester is analysed. A field test evaluates REAPer with different power sources.
