image reconstruction for brain CT slices

Different modalities in biomedical images, like CT, MRI and PET scanners, provide detailed cross-sectional views of human anatomy. This paper introduces three-dimensional brain reconstruction based on CT slices. It contains filtering, fuzzy segmentation, matching method of contours, cell array structure and image animation. Experimental results have shown its validity. The innovation is matching method of contours and fuzzy segmentation algorithm of CT slices.

Novel blind source separation algorithm using Gaussian mixture density function

The blind source separation (BSS) is an important task for numerous applications in signal processing, communications and array processing. But for many complex sources blind separation algorithms are not efficient because the probability distribution of the sources cannot be estimated accurately. So in this paper, to justify the ME(maximum enteropy) approach, the relation between the ME and the MMI(minimum mutual information) is elucidated first. Then a novel algorithm that uses Gaussian mixture density to approximate the probability distribution of the sources is presented based on the ME approach. The experiment of the BSS of ship-radiated noise demonstrates that the proposed algorithm is valid and efficient.

Semantics-based pre-fetching for reducing WWW latency

A semantics-based pre-fetching model is presented. This model predicts future requests based on latent intention that the user's current access path implies in semantics, rather than on temporal relationships, which oversomes the limitation of previous pre-fetching approaches. The hidden Markov model (HMM) was employed for mining actual intention from access patterns. Experimental results show that the proposed pre-fetching model has better general performance.

Single amino acid polymorphisms (SAPs) are the most abundant form of known genetic variations associated with human diseases. It is of great interest to study the sequence-structure-function relationship underlying SAPs. In this work, we collected the human variant data from three databases and divided them into three categories, i.e. cancer somatic mutations (CSM), Mendelian disease-related variant (SVD) and neutral polymorphisms (SVP). We built support vector machine (SVM) classifiers to predict these three classes of SAPs, using the optimal features selected by a random forest algorithm. Consequently, 280 sequence-derived and structural features were initially extracted from the curated datasets from which 18 optimal candidate features were further selected by random forest. Furthermore, we performed a stepwise feature selection to select characteristic sequence and structural features that are important for predicting each SAPs class. As a result, our predictors achieved a prediction accuracy (ACC) of 84.97, 96.93, 86.98 and 88.24%, for the three classes, CSM, SVD and SVP, respectively. Performance comparison with other previously developed tools such as SIFT, SNAP and Polyphen2 indicates that our method provides a favorable performance with higher Sensitivity scores and Matthew's correlation coefficients (MCC). These results indicate that the prediction performance of SAPs classifiers can be effectively improved by feature selection. Moreover, division of SAPs into three respective categories and construction of accurate SVM-based classifiers for each class provides a practically useful way for investigating the difference between Mendelian disease-related variants and cancer somatic mutations.

—In clinical practice, electroencephalography (EEG) plays an important role in the diagnosis of epilepsy. EEG-based computer-aided diagnosis of epilepsy can greatly improve the accuracy of epilepsy detection while reducing the workload of physicians. However, there are many challenges in practical applications for personalized epileptic EEG detection (i.e., training of detection model for a specific person), including the difficulty in extracting effective features from one single view, the undesirable but common scenario of lacking sufficient training data in practice, and the no guarantee of identically distributed training and test data. To solve these problems, we propose a TSK fuzzy system-based epilepsy detection algorithm that integrates multi-view collaborative transfer learning. To address the challenge due to the limitation of single-view features, multi-view learning ensures the diversity of features by extracting them from different views. The lack of training data for building a personalized detection model is tackled by leveraging the knowledge from the source domain (reference scene) to enhance the performance of the target domain (current scene of interest), where mismatch of data distributions between the two domains is resolved with adaption technique based on maximum mean discrepancy. Notably, the transfer learning and multi-view feature extraction are performed at the same time. Furthermore, the fuzzy rules of the TSK fuzzy system equip the model with strong fuzzy logic inference capability. Hence, the proposed method has the potential to detect epileptic EEG signals effectively, which is demonstrated with the positive results from a large number of experiments on the CHB-MIT dataset. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Modeling Inter-Intra Heterogeneity for Graph Federated Learning

Heterogeneity is a fundamental and challenging issue in federated learning, especially for the graph data due to the complex relationships among the graph nodes. To deal with the heterogeneity, lots of existing methods perform the weighted federation based on their calculated similarities between pairwise clients (i.e., subgraphs). However, their inter-subgraph similarities estimated with the outputs of local models are less reliable, because the final outputs of local models may not comprehensively represent the real distribution of subgraph data. In addition, they ignore the critical intra-heterogeneity which usually exists within each subgraph itself. To address these issues, we propose a novel Federated learning method by integrally modeling the Inter-Intra Heterogeneity (FedIIH). For the inter-subgraph relationship, we propose a novel hierarchical variational model to infer the whole distribution of subgraph data in a multi-level form, so that we can accurately characterize the inter-subgraph similarities with the global perspective. For the intra-heterogeneity, we disentangle the subgraph into multiple latent factors and partition the model parameters into multiple parts, where each part corresponds to a single latent factor. Our FedIIH not only properly computes the distribution similarities between subgraphs, but also learns disentangled representations that are robust to irrelevant factors within subgraphs, so that it successfully considers the inter- and intra- heterogeneity simultaneously. Extensive experiments on six homophilic and five heterophilic graph datasets in both non-overlapping and overlapping settings demonstrate the effectiveness of our method when compared with nine state-of-the-art methods. Specifically, FedIIH averagely outperforms the second-best method by a large margin of 5.79% on all heterophilic datasets. Code is available at https://***/blgpb/FedIIH. Estimating the Ratio of Edge-Users (REU) is an important issue in mobile networks, as it helps the subsequent adjustment of loads in different cells. However, existing approaches usually determine the REU manually, which are experience-dependent and labor-intensive, and thus the estimated REU might be imprecise. Considering the inherited graph structure of mobile networks, in this paper, we utilize a graph-based deep learning method for automatic REU estimation, where the practical cells are deemed as nodes and the load switchings among them constitute edges. Concretely, Graph Attention Network (GAT) is employed as the backbone of our method due to its impressive generalizability in dealing with networked data. Nevertheless, conventional GAT cannot make full use of the information in mobile networks, since it only incorporates node features to infer the pairwise importance and conduct graph convolutions, while the edge features that are actually critical in our problem are disregarded. To accommodate this issue, we propose an Edge-Aware Graph Attention Network (EAGAT), which is able to fuse the node features and edge features for REU estimation. Extensive experimental results on two real-world mobile network datasets demonstrate the superiority of our EAGAT approach to several state-of-the-art methods.

Heavy snow seriously degrades the performance of outdoor computer vision systems. Near- and far-field snowflakes in heavy snow videos exhibit distinctly disparate physical properties. To address this issue, this research proposes a video desnowing model that utilizes stable tensor decomposition with snow depth prior information. Initially, the depth of snowflakes is transformed by their speeds calculated from the optical flow field of snowfall. Next, the noise level in backgrounds is available by dense snow. In contrast to previous tensor decomposition (TD), the introduction of a noise term enhances the stability of the depth prior-based stable tensor decomposition (DP-STD) in addressing heavy snowfall. This leads to more efficient and accurate restoration of underlying nonsnow structure. Inspired by biomimicry, the snow on moving objects (MOs) is removed by the adaptive mimesis region of interest (AM-ROI). Both synthetic and real snowfall experimental results show that our proposed desnowing model is more effective than the current SOTA algorithm in removing heavy snow. © 2023, The Authors. In this article, we present an approach for the automated extraction of quantitative information about trichome patterning on leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana. Time series of growing rosette leaves (4D confocal datasets, 3D + time) are used for this work. At first, significant anatomical structures, i.e. leaf surface and midplane are extracted robustly. Using the extracted anatomical structures, a biological reference coordinate system is registered to the leaves. The performed registration allows to determine intra- as well as inter-series spatiotemporal correspondences. Trichomes are localized by first detecting candidates using Hough transform. Then, local 3D invariants are extracted and the candidates are validated using a Support Vector Machine (SVM).

Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of mortality worldwide. Detection of atrial fibrillation (AF) in the asymptomatic stage can help prevent strokes. It also improves clinical decision making through the delivery of suitable treatment such as, anticoagulant therapy, in a timely manner. The clinical significance of such early detection of AF in electrocardiogram (ECG) signals has inspired numerous studies in recent years, of which many aim to solve this task by leveraging machine learning algorithms. ECG datasets containing AF samples, however, usually suffer from severe class imbalance, which if unaccounted for, affects the performance of classification algorithms. Data augmentation is a popular solution to tackle this problem. In this study, we investigate the impact of various data augmentation algorithms, e.g., oversampling, Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), on solving the class imbalance problem. These algorithms are quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated, compared and discussed in detail. The results show that deep learning-based AF signal classification methods benefit more from data augmentation using GANs and GMMs, than oversampling. Furthermore, the GAN results in circa 3% better AF classification accuracy in average while performing comparably to the GMM in terms of f1-score.
