Recently, medical image compression becomes essential to effectively handle large amounts of medical data for storage and communication purposes. Vector quantization (VQ) is a popular image compression technique, and the commonly used VQ model is Linde–Buzo–Gray (LBG) that constructs a local optimal codebook to compress images. The codebook construction was considered as an optimization problem, and a bioinspired algorithm was employed to solve it. This article proposed a VQ codebook construction approach called the L2-LBG method utilizing the Lion optimization algorithm (LOA) and Lempel Ziv Markov chain Algorithm (LZMA). Once LOA constructed the codebook, LZMA was applied to compress the index table and further increase the compression performance of the LOA. A set of experimentation has been carried out using the benchmark medical images, and a comparative analysis was conducted with Cuckoo Search-based LBG (CS-LBG), Firefly-based LBG (FF-LBG) and JPEG2000. The compression efficiency of the presented model was validated in terms of compression ratio (CR), compression factor (CF), bit rate, and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR). The proposed L2-LBG method obtained a higher CR of 0.3425375 and PSNR value of 52.62459 compared to CS-LBG, FA-LBG, and JPEG2000 methods. The experimental values revealed that the L2-LBG process yielded effective compression performance with a better-quality reconstructed image. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd

Since the DC-coupled interface between the driver and the laser diode makes it impossible for the conventional drivers to work with low power supply, an output stage has been proposed. A novel APC can suppress the output average optical power and extinction ratio within ±0.3 dBm and ±0.4 dB(-40°C to 100°C), respectively. The initialization time is not more than 0.6 μs because the fast binary search algorithm is incorporated into the APC. The burst-on delay and burst-off delay are less than 5 ns and meet the requirement of PON system. The chip is fabricated in TSMC 0.8 μm BiCMOS process and occupies an area of 1.56 mm × 1.67 mm with a power consumption of 105 mW.

Because of the complex background, and high density, most of the existing methods fail to accurately extract a road network that appears correct and complete. Moreover, they suffer from either insufficient training data or high costs of manual annotation. To address these problems, we introduce a new model to apply structured domain adaption for synthetic image generation and road segmentation. We incorporate a feature pyramid network into generative adversarial networks to minimize the difference between the source and target domains. A generator is learned to produce quality synthetic images, and the discriminator attempts to distinguish them. We also propose a feature pyramid network that improves the performance of the proposed model by extracting effective features from all the layers of the network for describing different scales’ objects. Indeed, a novel scale-wise architecture is introduced to learn from the multi-level feature maps and improve the semantics of the features. For optimization, the model is trained by a joint reconstruction loss function, which minimizes the difference between the fake images and the real ones. A wide range of experiments on three datasets prove the superior performance of the proposed approach in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In particular, our model achieves state-of-the-art 78.86 IOU on the Massachusetts dataset with 14.89M parameters and 86.78B FLOPs, with 4× fewer FLOPs but higher accuracy (+3.47% IOU) than the top performer among state-of-the-art approaches used in the evaluation. Sea-land segmentation is an important process for many key applications in remote sensing. Proper operative sea–land segmentation for remote sensing images remains a challenging issue due to complex and diverse transition between sea and lands. Although several Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been developed for sea-land segmentation, the performance of these CNNs is far from the expected target. This paper presents a novel deep neural network structure for pixel-wise sea-land segmentation, a Residual Dense U-Net (RDU-Net), in complex and high-density remote sensing images. RDU-Net is a combination of both downsampling and upsampling paths to achieve satisfactory results. In each down- and up-sampling path, in addition to the convolution layers, several densely connected residual network blocks are proposed to systematically aggregate multi-scale contextual information. Each dense network block contains multilevel convolution layers, short-range connections and an identity mapping connection which facilitates features reuse in the network and makes full use of the hierarchical features from the original images. These proposed blocks have a certain number of connections that are designed with shorter distance backpropagation between the layers and can significantly improve segmentation results whilst minimizing computational costs. We have performed extensive experiments on two real datasets Google-Earth and ISPRS and compare the proposed RDU-Net against several variations of Dense Networks. This paper generalizes regularized regression problems in a hyper-reproducing kernel Hilbert space (hyper-RKHS), illustrates its utility for kernel learning and out-of-sample extensions, and proves asymptotic convergence results for the introduced regression models in an approximation theory view. Algorithmically, we consider two regularized regression models with bivariate forms in this space, including kernel ridge regression (KRR) and support vector regression (SVR) endowed with hyper-RKHS, and further combine divide-and-conquer with Nyström approximation for scalability in large sample cases. This framework is general: the underlying kernel is learned from a broad class, and can be positive definite or not, which adapts to various requirements in kernel learning. Theoretically, we study the convergence behavior of regularized regression algorithms in hyper-RKHS and derive the learning rates, which goes beyond the classical analysis on RKHS due to the non-trivial independence of pairwise samples and the characterisation of hyper-RKHS. Experimentally, results on several benchmarks suggest that the employed framework is able to learn a general kernel function form an arbitrary similarity matrix, and thus achieves a satisfactory performance on classification tasks. Isoforms refer to different mRNA molecules transcribed from the same gene, which can be translated into proteins with varying structures and functions. Predicting the functions of isoforms is an essential topic in bioinformatics as it can provide valuable insights into the intricate mechanisms of gene regulation and biological processes. Conventionally, gene function labels are standardized in Gene Ontology (GO) terms. However, traditional methods for predicting isoform function are largely limited by the absence of isoform-specific labels, sparse annotations, and the vast number of GO terms. To address these issues, we propose HANIso, a deep learning-based method for isoform function prediction. HANIso leverages a pretrained protein language model to extract features from protein sequences. It also integrates heterogeneous information, such as isoform sequence features, GO annotations, and isoform interaction data, using a Heterogeneous Graph Attention Network (HAN). This allows the model to learn the importance of different sources of information and their semantic relationships through the attention mechanism. Our method can predict function labels at both the gene level and isoform level. We conduct experiments on two species datasets, and the results demonstrate that our method outperforms existing methods on both AUROC and AUPRC. HANIso has the potential to overcome the limitations of traditional methods and provide a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of isoform function.

In this paper, we propose a data-adaptive non-parametric kernel learning framework in margin based kernel methods. In model formulation, given an initial kernel matrix, a data-adaptive matrix with two constraints is imposed in an entry-wise scheme. Learning this data-adaptive matrix in a formulation-free strategy enlarges the margin between classes and thus improves the model flexibility. The introduced two constraints are imposed either exactly (on small data sets) or approximately (on large data sets) in our model, which provides a controllable trade-off between model flexibility and complexity with theoretical demonstration. In algorithm optimization, the objective function of our learning framework is proven to be gradient-Lipschitz continuous. Thereby, kernel and classifier/regressor learning can be efficiently optimized in a unified framework via Nesterov's acceleration. For the scalability issue, we study a decomposition-based approach to our model in the large sample case. The effectiveness of this approximation is illustrated by both empirical studies and theoretical guarantees. Experimental results on various classification and regression benchmark data sets demonstrate that our non-parametric kernel learning framework achieves good performance when compared with other representative kernel learning based algorithms.

Vehicle occupants that are out-of-position can be deadly injured by the deployment of the air bag in a crash situation. In recent years many different sensors and systems have been proposed to detect the type of occupant and the position of the occupant's head. This work presents a method for classification and occupant's head detection based on passive stereo vision. The proposed system uses depth surface analysis and scene statistics together with support vector machines for classification and selection of head candidates. Evaluation of the method shows 99% correct for classification and 98% correct for head detection, using large sets of image data, and image sequences recorded in a driving vehicle.

COVID-MTL: Multitask learning with shift3D and random-weighted loss for automated diagnosis and severity assessment of COVID-19

There is an urgent need for automated methods to assist accurate and effective assessment of COVID-19. Radiology and nucleic acid test (NAT) are complementary COVID-19 diagnosis methods. In this paper, we present an end-to-end multitask learning (MTL) framework (COVID-MTL) that is capable of automated and simultaneous detection (against both radiology and NAT) and severity assessment of COVID-19. COVID-MTL learns different COVID-19 tasks in parallel through our novel random-weighted loss function, which assigns learning weights under Dirichlet distribution to prevent task dominance;our new 3D real-time augmentation algorithm (Shift3D) introduces space variances for 3D CNN components by shifting low-level feature representations of volumetric inputs in three dimensions;thereby, the MTL framework is able to accelerate convergence and improve joint learning performance compared to single-task models. By only using chest CT scans, COVID-MTL was trained on 930 CT scans and tested on separate 399 cases. COVID-MTL achieved AUCs of 0.939 and 0.846, and accuracies of 90.23% and 79.20% for detection of COVID-19 against radiology and NAT, respectively, which outperformed the state-of-the-art models. Meanwhile, COVID-MTL yielded AUC of 0.800 ± 0.020 and 0.813 ± 0.021 (with transfer learning) for classifying control/suspected, mild/regular, and severe/critically-ill cases.
