A novel evolutionary route planner for aircraft is proposed in this paper. In the new planner, individual candidates are evaluated with respect to the workspace, thus the computation of the configuration space is not required. By using problem-specific chromosome structure and genetic operators, the routes are generated in real time,with different mission constraints such as minimum route leg length and flying altitude, maximum turning angle, maximum climbing/diving angle and route distance constraint taken into account.

Object-based video segmentation is an important issue for many multimedia applications. A video segmentation method based on EM algorithm is proposed. We consider video segmentation as an unsupervised classification problem and apply EM algorithm to obtain the maximum-likelihood estimation of the Gaussian model parameters for model-based segmentation. We simultaneously combine multiple features (motion, color) within a maximum likelihood framework to obtain accurate segment results. We also use the temporal consistency among video frames to improve the speed of EM algorithm. Experimental results on typical MPEG-4 sequences and real scene sequences show that our method has an attractive accuracy and robustness.

Later he became the Professor Emeritus of that Institute in 1986. He became a Professor at Tokyo Engineering University and Professor Emeritus of that University in 1991. In 1991 he became Professor at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and was appointed Vice President of that Institute in 1992. He served successively as editor examiner secretary of general affairs inspector councilor committee-head of pattern recognition and specialized studies head of Tokyo chapter and vice president of this Institute. In 1991 he became the Honorary Member.He received the Paper Award from the Institute four times and the literary works Award once. He received the Achievement Award and the Distinguished Service Award in 1976 and 1989 respectively. He received the Purple Ribbon Medal from the Emperor in 1988.

During the past few years, there has been a series of papers published on the theory of the natural observation method. As one of the important applications of this theory, the problems of acceptance and generation of a general waveform are discussed here. The case of polynomial waveforms and its corresponding theory was published previously. We study the problem of representing images within a multimedia Database Management System (DBMS), in order to support fast retrieval operations without compromising storage efficiency. To achieve this goal, we propose new image coding techniques which combine a wavelet representation, embedded coding of the wavelet coefficients, and segmentation of image-domain regions in the wavelet domain. A bitstream is generated in which each image region is encoded independently of other regions, without having to explicitly store information describing the regions. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithms achieve coding performance which compares favorably, both perceptually and objectively, to that achieved using state-of-the-art image/video coding techniques while additionally providing region-based support.
