Small storage space for photographs in formal documents is increasingly necessary in today's needs for huge amounts of data communication and storage. Traditional compression algorithms do not sufficiently utilize the distinctness of formal photographs. That is, the object is an image of the human head, and the background is in unicolor. Therefore, the compression is of low efficiency and the image after compression is still space-consuming. This paper presents an image compression algorithm based on object segmentation for practical high-efficiency applications. To achieve high coding efficiency, shape-adaptive discrete wavelet transforms are used to transformation arbitrarily shaped objects. The areas of the human head and its background are compressed separately to reduce the coding redundancy of the background. Two methods, lossless image contour coding based on differential chain, and modified set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm of arbitrary shape, are discussed in detail. The results of experiments show that when bit per pixel (bpp)is equal to 0.078, peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of reconstructed photograph will exceed the standard of SPIHT by nearly 4dB.

This paper proposed an accelerated algorithm for EWA volume Splatting based on modern graphic processing unit (GPU). It mainly made use of point sprite, frame buffer object and programmable function of GPU. In the algorithm, sampling points are directly regarded as proxy geometry, three dimension texture coordinates at pixels are computed by ray tracing in GPU and Gaussian filter is replaced by an approximate filter. The experimental results demonstrate that the algorithm can be used in high quality and interactive visualization.

It is very popular to represent 3D surface model by triangle mesh in several fields. Based on triangle mesh model, this paper proposed an algorithm which applies adjacency and incidence framework (AIF) to implement efficient virtual cutting and splitting operation. There are three main steps composing the whole process, that is, definition of cutting path, reconstruction of triangle mesh and selection of isolated facets. By AIF algorithm, it is easy to get the continuous cutting path on any surface, to modify the triangle mesh and to get the relationship of facets' topology. With the searching technique, AIF also helps to separate certain isolated parts of mesh efficiently. Through this proposed method, it is quite easy to conduct efficient cutting and splitting and obtain more precise and better real visualized rendering view at last.

We propose a straightforward skin detection method for online videos. To overcome varying illumination circumstances and a variety of skin colors, we introduce a multiple model approach which can be carried out independently per model. The color models are initiated by skin detection based on face detection and adapted in real time. Our approach outperforms static approaches both in precision and runtime. If we detect a face in a scene, the number of false positives can be diminished significantly. Evaluation is carried out on publicly available on-line videos showing that adaptive multiple model outperforms static methods in classification precision and suppression of false positives. This paper introduced a novel high performance algorithm and VLSI architectures for achieving bit plane coding (BPC) in word level sequential and parallel mode. The proposed BPC algorithm adopts the techniques of coding pass prediction and parallel & pipeline to reduce the number of accessing memory and to increase the ability of concurrently processing of the system, where all the coefficient bits of a code block could be coded by only one scan. A new parallel bit plane architecture (PA) was proposed to achieve word-level sequential coding. Moreover, an efficient high-speed architecture (HA) was presented to achieve multi-word parallel coding. Compared to the state of the art, the proposed PA could reduce the hardware cost more efficiently, though the throughput retains one coefficient coded per clock. While the proposed HA could perform coding for 4 coefficients belonging to a stripe column at one intra-clock cycle, so that coding for an NxN code-block could be completed in approximate N2/4 intra-clock cycles. Theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed designs have high throughput rate with good performance in terms of speedup to cost, which can be good alternatives for low power applications.

Two medieval manuscripts are recorded, investigated and analyzed by philologists in collaboration with computer scientists. Due to mold, air humidity and water the parchment is partially damaged and consequently hard to read. In order to enhance the readability of the text, the manuscript pages are imaged in different spectral bands ranging from 360 to 1000nm. A registration process is necessary for further imageprocessing methods which combine the information gained by the different spectral bands. Therefore, the images are coarsely aligned using rotationally invariant features and an affine transformation. Afterwards, the similarity of the different images is computed by means of the normalized cross correlation. Finally, the images are accurately mapped to each other by the local weighted mean transformation. The algorithms used for the registration and results in enhancing the texts using Multivariate Spatial Correlation are presented in this paper. copyright by EURASIP.
