In this paper, we contribute performance modeling and analysis approach in computer networks. We present a meta-model designed for the performance modeling of network infrastructures in modern data centers. Instances of our meta-model can be automatically transformed into stochastic simulation models for performance prediction. In this paper, we present a transformation to Queueing Petri Nets (QPNs). We show that despite the high level of abstraction of the QPN models, we are able to predict the utilization of resources with good accuracy within a short time.

Classifying requirements is crucial for automatically handling natural language requirements. The performance of existing automatic classification approaches diminishes when applied to unseen projects because requirements usually vary in wording and style. The main problem is poor generalization. We propose NoRBERT that fine-tunes BERT, a language model that has proven useful for transfer learning. We apply our approach to different tasks in the domain of requirements classification. We achieve similar or better results F 1 -scores of up to 94%) on both seen and unseen projects for classifying functional and non-functional requirements on the PROMISE NFR dataset. NoRBERT outperforms recent approaches at classifying non-functional requirements subclasses. The most frequent classes are classified with an average F 1 -score of 87%. In an unseen project setup on a relabeled PROMISE NFR dataset, our approach achieves an improvement of 15 percentage points in average F 1 score compared to recent approaches. Additionally, we propose to classify functional requirements according to the included concerns, i.e., function, data, and behavior. We labeled the functional requirements in the PROMISE NFR dataset and applied our approach. NoRBERT achieves an F 1 -score of up to 92%. Overall, NoRBERT improves requirements classification and can be applied to unseen projects with convincing results.

The selection of products and services is a central issue in electronic commerce. Available data is often not sufficient to allow a precise evaluation and user preferences are usually vague. In this paper, a model for deciding under imperfect information is presented. The decision model handles two types of imperfections: imprecisions on the side of the alternatives and vagueness in the preferences of the users. Incomplete description of the alternatives may result in imprecisions in the evaluation of their features. The decision model provides a framework to reduce these imprecisions by completing information from external sources. Besides, fuzzy query conditions allow users to express vague preferences. A scenario illustrates the use of the decision model where the goal is to select a rental apartment from classified advertisements with respect to its availability by public transport.

Experience with the parallelization of an index generator for desktop search is presented. Several configurations of the index generator are compared on three different Intel platforms with 4, 8, and 32 cores. The optimal configurations for these platforms are not intuitive and are markedly different for the three platforms. For finding the optimal configuration, detailed measurements and experimentation were necessary. Several recommendations for parallel software design are derived from this study.

A multi-attribute decision model aiming at the selection of an efficient set of alternatives is presented. The major challenge is that the alternatives are not perfectly known, i.e., the associated values may be imprecise. Furthermore, for improved user friendliness, vague query conditions are allowed. Imprecise scores are described by probability distributions, vague query conditions by fuzzy predicates. The philosophy of the presented approach is to create an environment similar to the multidimensional spreadsheet front-end of data warehouses, in which the user can interactively discover the imperfect answers. In particular, numeric measures that allow an aggregated view of alternatives are defined. A geographic information retrieval scenario demonstrates the use of the decision model.

Multicore hardware is ubiquitous, but billions of lines of code in performance-critical commodity software are still sequential. Although parallel libraries, design patterns, and best practice guidelines are available, thinking parallel is still a big challenge for many software engineers. In this paper we present a case study on parallelizing commodity software using a commercial real-time audio application with over 700,000 lines of code. In contrast to best practice guidelines, our goal is to investigate what parallelization strategy can effectively be used in data stream-intensive applications. Performing an in-depth analysis of the software architecture and its run-time performance, we locate parallelization potential and propose three different parallelization strategies. We evaluate them with respect to their parallel performance impact. Regarding the application's intrinsic real-time requirement and a very short audio cycle turnaround time, a busy-waiting strategy offers the best audio performance of 327 μs per cycle on an eight-core machine. With an efficiency of 99% this is close to the optimal schedule.

In service-oriented architectures, participants keep interacting by exchanging tasks, in order to increase their benefit. Since carrying out a task incurs costs, and participants often interact with unknown partners, uncooperative behavior dominates in the absence of a mechanism. A well-known economic model describing this situation is the Helping Game. In previous helping experiments, participants decide 'by hand' before each interaction whether to carry out the task or not. In online environments however, such manual decisions are infeasible. This paper focuses on policy-based helping experiments, i.e., participants formulate policies stating when exactly they accept a task. This approach gives way to many questions, e.g., what kinds of policies are formulated, how do the policies affect the outcome of the experiments, is the outcome different from the ones of previous helping experiments, how does it depend on the language used to formulate policies, etc. In an extensive study, we address these and related questions. As a result, most participants behave strategically and make use of information on the previous behavior of others. The results indicate that participants perceive that cooperative behavior pays off. Further, despite the infinite policy space, we could discover eight meaningful categories to classify all formulated policies.

Recently, ontology engineering has become ever more important when it comes to conceptualize knowledge. However, writing software applications that operate on ontological knowledge still suffers from a lack of connectivity provided by available ontology management systems. Interfaces of ontology management systems are either based on error prone programming language agnostic remoting protocols or they are restricted to one particular programming language. We implemented an ontological Knowledge Base Server, which can expose the functionality of arbitrary off-the-shelf ontology management systems via arbitrary remoting protocols. Based on XML Schema Definition, we defined a full-fledged API for processing OWL ontologies. Client access code can be generated automatically for virtually any object oriented programming language. Using Description Logics terminology, the Knowledge Base Server API was formally specified, such that it could be used to validate implementations based on three different adapted ontology management systems.

Rating multiple choice questions (MCQ) created by peers has been touted as a good approach to peer assessment. The main challenge in this setting is to ensure the quality of peer assessment. Existing approaches rely on the assumption that students intrinsically create high-quality ratings. We propose an incentive mechanism to increase the quality of ratings. To evaluate our approach, we have conducted a case study with 242 students and 17 experts. Our results show that peer ratings are a good predictor of expert ratings. Furthermore, we develop a model that reliably measures the performance of students, but does not require expert ratings.

Social network analysis (SNA) has attracted a lot of attention over the past years. Existing tools for SNA do not allow a user-centric analysis of the social neighborhood, i.e., the subgraph of the user's friends and friends of a friend. In this paper, we introduce SONAR, an open source Web application for user-centric SNA. Its extensible architecture and flexible data model allows developers to embed SONAR directly into social networking websites. A performance evaluation shows that our application scales well with the number of users and adds only minimal overhead to the SNA algorithms.
