In this paper, we address the problem of performance analysis in computer networks. We present a new meta-model designed for the performance modeling of network infrastructures in modern data centers. Instances of our metamodel can be automatically transformed into stochastic simulation models for performance prediction. We evaluate the approach in a case study of a road traffic monitoring system. We compare the performance prediction results against the real system and a benchmark. The presented results show that our approach, despite of introducing many modeling abstractions, delivers predictions with errors less than 32% and correctly detects bottlenecks in the modeled network.

Current research activities in the computer science area focus on integration of systems with diverse purposes and architecture. They include the usage of mobile devices just like any immobile computer and the efficient, combined presentation and utilisation of contents from multiple providers together on the web. Even though these two tasks are naturally tackled in different ways, in this paper we propose a single solution to both problems based on logic, which, furthermore, makes their seamless integration possible. That is, without scrapping the well known models that have proven good, we offer a scalable architecture that supports wireless access to the most valuable pieces of the Internet keeping parts of the existing infrastructure and with no duplication of functionality. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

In recent years, the development of systems for processing and analyzing large amounts of data (so-called Big data) has become an important sub-discipline of software engineering. However, to date there exits no comprehensive summary of the specific idiosyncrasies and challenges that the development of Big data systems imposes on software engineers. With this paper, we aim to provide a first step towards filling this gap based on our collective experience from industry and academic projects as well as from consulting and initial literature reviews. The main contribution of our work is a concise summary of 26 challenges in engineering Big data systems, collected and consolidated by means of a systematic identification process. The aim is to make practitioners more aware of common challenges and to offer researchers a solid baseline for identifying novel software engineering research directions.

In the recent past, there have been frequent reports on privacy violations by service providers on the Web. The providers are overstrained with the legal implications of processing personal data. data-protection authorities in turn are overburdened with the enforcement of the regulations. Users themselves typically cannot identify those violations, due to missing expertise in data-protection law. In this paper we propose and evaluate CAPE (Collaborative Access to Privacy Enhancement), an approach that makes data-protection law accessible to all parties involved in the processing of personal information. To this end, we transform legal expertise on data protection into intuitive questions that anyone can answer. CAPE is 'Web 2.0', in the sense that individuals answer the questions they can, and they benefit from the answers of others. To identify violations, we compare the answers to answer patterns defined apriori that indicate a violation. The main innovation is the combination of Web 2.0 functionality with the structured approach (sequences of closed questions in particular) lawyers use to identify violations. In extensive user studies, we show that users can identify 81% of those violations legal experts find. Further, individuals answer our questions with a high degree of agreement, independent from their background knowledge.

A challenge of existing program comprehension approaches is to provide consistent and flexible representations for software systems. Maintainers have to match their mental models with the different representations these tools provide. In this paper, we present a novel approach that addresses this issue by providing a consistent ontological representation for both source code and documentation. The ontological representation unifies information from various sources, and therefore reduces the maintainers' comprehension efforts. In addition, representing software artifacts in a formal ontology enables maintainers to formulate hypotheses about various properties of software systems. These hypotheses can be validated through an iterative exploration of information derived by our ontology inference engine. The implementation of our approach is presented in detail, and a case study is provided to demonstrate the applicability of our approach during the architectural evolution of a Web site content management system

Finite-time analysis of globally nonstationary multi-armed bandits

We consider nonstationary multi-armed bandit problems where the model parameters of the arms change over time. We introduce the adaptive resetting bandit (ADR-bandit), a bandit algorithm class that leverages adaptive windowing techniques from literature on data streams. We first provide new guarantees on the quality of estimators resulting from adaptive windowing techniques, which are of independent interest. Furthermore, we conduct a finite-time analysis of ADR-bandit in two typical environments: an abrupt environment where changes occur instantaneously and a gradual environment where changes occur progressively. We demonstrate that ADR-bandit has nearly optimal performance when abrupt or gradual changes occur in a coordinated manner that we call global changes. We demonstrate that forced exploration is unnecessary when we assume such global changes. Unlike the existing nonstationary bandit algorithms, ADR-bandit has optimal performance in stationary environments as well as nonstationary environments with global changes. Our experiments show that the proposed algorithms outperform the existing approaches in synthetic and real-world environments.

This open access book presents the outcomes of the “Design for Future – Managed Software Evolution” priority program 1593, which was launched by the German Research Foundation (“Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)”) to develop new approaches to software engineering with a specific focus on long-lived software systems. The different lifecycles of software and hardware platforms lead to interoperability problems in such systems. Instead of separating the development, adaptation and evolution of software and its platforms, as well as aspects like operation, monitoring and maintenance, they should all be integrated into one overarching process.;Accordingly, the book is split into three major parts, the first of which includes an introduction to the nature of software evolution, followed by an overview of the specific challenges and a general introduction to the case studies used in the project. The second part of the book consists of the main chapters on knowledge carrying software, and cover tacit knowledge in software evolution, continuous design decision support, model-based round-trip engineering for software product lines, performance analysis strategies, maintaining security in software evolution, learning from evolution for evolution, and formal verification of evolutionary changes. In turn, the last part of the book presents key findings and spin-offs. The individual chapters there describe various case studies, along with their benefits, deliverables and the respective lessons learned.
