Visual appeal (VA), as judged by users accessing different websites, has been shown to impact overall user preferences and satisfaction. In the context of Web Quality of Experience (QoE), we hypothesize that VA has a non-trivial impact on end user quality perception and hence needs to be accounted for when modeling overall Web QoE. In this paper, we aim to quantify the impact of VA factors on perceived visual design quality for different types of tested websites. We carried out two large-scale (>350 users each) crowd-sourced campaigns to test the influence of several factors often found in design best practices recommendations. While results have identified color goodness and font goodness as Key Influence Factors (KIF) for VA, an analysis of user demographics has further shown a strong impact of user's origin on subjective ratings. By quantifying the impact of identified KIFs on VA, we provide guidelines for successful VA manipulations to be considered in future Web QoE subjective tests. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel Attribute-augmented Seman- Tic Hierarchy (A2SH) and demonstrates its effectiveness in bridging both the semantic and intention gaps in Content- based Image Retrieval (CBIR). A 2SH organizes the seman- Tic concepts into multiple semantic levels and augments each concept with a set of related attributes, which describe the multiple facets of the concept and act as the intermedi- Ate bridge connecting the concept and low-level visual con- Tent. A hierarchical semantic similarity function is learnt to characterize the semantic similarities among images for re- Trieval. To better capture user search intent, a hybrid feed- back mechanism is developed, which collects hybrid feed- backs on attributes and images. These feedbacks are then used to refine the search results based on A2SH. We de- velop a content-based image retrieval system based on the proposed A 2SH. We conduct extensive experiments on a large-scale data set of over one million Web images. Exper- imental results show that the proposed A2SH can charac- Terize the semantic affinities among images accurately and can shape user search intent precisely and quickly, leading to more accurate search results as compared to state-of-the-art CBIR solutions. Cloud computing has demonstrated tremendous capability in a wide spectrum of online services. Virtualization provides an efficient solution to the utilization of modern multicore processor systems while affording significant flexibility. The growing popularity of virtualized datacenters motivates deeper understanding of the interactions between virtual machine management and the micro-architecture behaviors of the privileged domain. We argue that these behaviors must be factored into the design of processor microarchitecture in virtualized datacenters. In this work, we use performance counters on modern servers to study the micro-architectural execution characteristics of the privileged domain while performing various VM management operations. Our study shows that today's state-of-the-art processor still has room for further optimizations when executing virtualized cloud workloads, particularly in the organization of last level caches and on-chip cache coherence protocol. Specifically, our analysis shows that: shared caches could be partitioned to eliminate interference between the privileged domain and guest domains;the cache coherence protocol could support a high degree of data sharing of the privileged domain;and cache capacity or CPU utilization occupied by the privileged domain could be effectively managed when performing management workflows to achieve high system throughput. © 2013 IEEE.

We investigate the consequences of space-time being curved on space-based quantum communication protocols. We analyze tasks that require either the exchange of single photons in a certain entanglement distribution protocol or beams of light in a continuous-variable quantum key distribution scheme. We find that gravity affects the propagation of photons, therefore adding additional noise to the channel for the transmission of information. The effects could be measured with current technology.

Many important problems in science and engineering can be reduced to the problem of solving linear equations. The quantum algorithm discovered recently indicates that one can solve an N-dimensional linear equation in O(logN) time, which provides an exponential speedup over the classical counterpart. Here we report an experimental demonstration of the quantum algorithm when the scale of the linear equation is 2×2 using a nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor. For all sets of experiments, the fidelities of the final four-qubit states are all above 96%. This experiment gives the possibility of solving a series of practical problems related to linear systems of equations and can serve as the basis to realize many potential quantum algorithms.

The goal of the work presented here is to influence the overall behaviour of specific animal societies by integrating computational mechatronic devices (robots) into those societies. To do so, these devices should be accepted by the animals aspart of the society and/or as part of the collectively formed environment. For that, we have developed two sets of robotic hardware for integrating into societies of two different animals: zebra fish and young honeybees. We also developed mechanisms to provide feedback from the behaviours of societies for the controllers of the robotic system. Two different computational methods are then used as the controllers of the robots in simulation and successfully adapted by evolutionary algorithms to influence the simulated animals for desired behaviours. Together, these advances in mechatronic hardware, feedback mechanisms, and controller methodology are laying essential foundations to facilitate experiments on modulating self-organised behaviour in mixed animal -- robot societies.

Some aspects regarding delivering of different programming courses in three institutions from three countries (Serbia, FYR Macedonia and Croatia) are observed in the paper. Courses' profiles and the application of technology enhanced learning are described and compared. An analysis of the approaches and usage of a set of suitable software tools to enhance everyday teaching practice was conducted. At the end of the last school year, students filled-in appropriate questionnaire to provide feedback and their opinion. Results of questionnaire are presented, discussed and a comparative analysis is given. © 2013 ACM.

In this paper, we present a novel design and implementation of a mobile e-health system that employs mobile data mining to reduce the cost of processing sensing data, and social networking to facilitate collaborations between patients and care-givers. Our design integrates a Bluetooth v4.0 wireless radio, mobile data mining, and social networks techniques to provide a power-efficient solution for mobile e-health that optimizes the processing of multiple and diverse sensing data in mobile devices, and supports group-level activities for collaborative mobile e-health. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our proposed system.

Within today's large-scale data centers, the inter-node communication is often the major bottleneck. This fact recently blooms the data center network (DCN) research. Since building a real data center is cost prohibitive, most of DCN studies rely on simulations. Unfortunately, state-of-the-art network simulators have limited support for real world applications, which prevents researchers from first-hand investigation. To address this issue, we developed a unified and cross-layer simulation framework, namely the DCNSim. By leveraging the two widely deployed simulators, DCNSim introduces computer architecture solutions into DCN research. With DCNSim, one could run packet-level network simulation driven by commercial applications while varying computer and network parameters, such as CPU frequency, memory access latency, network topology and protocols. With extensive validations, we show that DCNSim could accurately capture performance trends caused by changing computer and network parameters. Finally, we argue that future DCN researches should consider computer architecture factors via several case studies. Copyright 2013 ACM.

The world faces an energy problem. Oil supply is gradually running out. Its use is polluting the planet with greenhouse gas. Most alternative energy sources also pose some environmental problems. Hence the efficient use of energy must be an integral part of any solution to them. Whenever possible, one must use advanced control engines and technologies to achieve the highest energy efficiency. In Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) industry, much research has identified a number of energy-saving control methods. Derived from optimal control theory, Model Predictive Control (MPC) is one of them. This paper presents a comprehensive review of its applications to HVAC systems. © 2013 IEEE.
