Recently, graphics processing units (GPUs) have opened up new opportunities for speeding up general-purpose parallel applications due to their massive computational power and up to hundreds of thousands of threads enabled by programming models such as CUDA. However, due to the serial nature of existing micro-architecture simulators, these massively parallel architectures and workloads need to be simulated sequentially. As a result, simulating GPGPU architectures with typical benchmarks and input data sets is extremely time-consuming. This paper addresses the GPGPU architecture simulation challenge by generating miniature, yet representative GPGPU kernels. We first summarize the static characteristics of an existing GPGPU kernel in a profile, and analyze its dynamic behavior using the novel concept of the divergence flow statistics graph (DFSG). We subsequently use a GPGPU kernel synthesizing framework to generate a miniature proxy of the original kernel, which can reduce simulation time significantly. The key idea is to reduce the number of simulated instructions by decreasing per-thread iteration counts of loops. Our experimental results show that our approach can accelerate GPGPU architecture simulation by a factor of 88X on average and up to 589X with an average IPC relative error of 5.6%.

A microring resonator was fabricated in LiNbO3 substrate by annealed proton exchange (APE) method. Measurement results show that thermal annealing is necessary to improve the performance of the channel waveguides. The measured extinction ratio is approximately 13dB. By making use of Cr film as electrodes, a tunability of 2 pm/V is obtained by applying 150V. © 2013 IEEE.

Intracranial volume is an important measure in brain research often used as a correction factor in inter subject studies. The current study investigates the resulting outcome in terms of the type of software used for automatically estimating ICV measure. Five groups of 70 subjects are considered, including adult controls (AC) (n=11), adult with dementia (AD) (n=11), pediatric controls (PC) (n=18) and two groups of pediatric epilepsy subjects (PE1.5 and PE3) (n=30) using 1.5 T and 3T scanners, respectively. Reference measurements were calculated for each subject by manually tracing intracranial cavity without sub-sampling. Four publicly available software packages (AFNI, Freesurfer, FSL, and SPM) were examined in their ability to automatically estimate ICV across the five groups. Linear regression analyses suggest that reference measurement discrepancy could be explained best by SPM [R~2 = 0.67;p < 0.01] for the AC group, Freesurfer [R~2 = 0.46;p = 0.02] for the AD group, AFNI [R~2 = 0.97;p < 0.01] for the PC group and FSL [R~2 = 0.6;p = 0.1] for the PE1.5 and [R~2 = 0.6;p < 0.01] for PE3 groups. The study demonstrates that the choice of the automated software for ICV estimation is dependent on the population under consideration and whether the software used is atlas-based or not.

Pulsed discharge plasma over the liquid surface was observed in the needle electrode configuration. The characteristics of streamer propagation including its optical emission intensity were investigated by using the intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) camera. The experiment was conducted at 313 K, 0.1 MPa argon in a batch-type reactor with methyl orange as a starting material. The characteristic of pulsed streamers were started from the electrode placed above the methyl orange liquid surface and then reached the methyl orange liquid surface, where they propagated on it. The propagation of pulsed streamers and their progression distance increased with the increase in peak voltage value. The optical emission intensity increased immediately after the breakdown;and it increased to its peak value when the applied voltage reached its peak value. After pulsed discharge plasma treatment, methyl orange degraded into its derived compounds with the appearance of light color. UV-vis spectrophotometer analyzed that the intermediate compounds from the degradation of methyl orange consist primarily of aromatic compounds which contain nitrogen functional groups. The degradation of methyl orange is 99% when the number of discharge plasma was 20000x. With increasing the pulse discharge numbers, the pH and the conductivity of methyl orange solution changed clearly. © 2013 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

Recognizing the upper bound of TCP initial window (IW) size-four segments-too small, researchers have been proposing to increase this. In this context, we observed that given the mice-elephant phenomenon, small flows benefit more from larger IW-size than large flows. This work proposes a simple but effective function to set IW-size for each flow, and investigates a scenario where the decentralized nature of Internet may enforce users to strategically choose right value for some parameter V in function, for improving performance of flows. We develop an evolutionary non-cooperative game-theoretic model to evaluate equilibria points and evolutionary stable strategy that are reached by users. Our game-theoretic results reveal that, there exists an optimal value for V for which small flows achieve better performance. Further our experiments on a testbed confirm that the performance attained by small flows using the proposed function is considerably improved, while not affecting the performance of large flows.

One of the main challenges in socially assistive robotics is providing flexible and easy-to-use programming tools for users. Unlike other robots, designing socially assistive robots includes the subject-matter-experts (SMEs) from non-engineering disciplines. Therefore, the provided tools should be suitable for users with less programming experience. On the other hand, socially assistive robotic research involves field trials and user-centric studies, in which user and subject matter expert comments are used to improve the robot applications. Therefore, field programmability and customizability are key requirements. This paper presents a programming framework for socially assistive robots, which satisfies the above requirements; programmability by non-experts, field programmability and customizability. The proposed framework has been successfully implemented, deployed, and tested. Some robots with the framework presented in this paper are already in the commercialization pathway.

The effects of low-temperature illumination and annealing on fractional quantum Hall (FQH) characteristics of a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well are investigated. Illumination alone, below 1 K, decreases the density of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) electrons by more than an order of magnitude and resets the sample to a repeatable initial state. Subsequent thermal annealing at a few Kelvin restores the original density and dramatically improves FQH characteristics. A reliable illumination and annealing recipe is developed that yields an energy gap of 600 mK for the 5/2 state.

Behavior management and performance evaluation are two significant issues in the design and operation of automated manufacturing systems (AMS). The former constrains their dynamics so as to avoid improper behavior and eliminate downtime, while the latter aims to evaluate cycle time. Although abundant research has been conducted on each issue independently, researchers rarely address both in a correlative way. Without accurate and prompt guidance to route parts, it is difficult for an AMS to manage the production process in an optimal manner. In the paradigm of Petri nets, we show that it is crucial to optimize certain local priorities for the sake of cycle time minimization or throughput maximization. Without making radical changes to the system structure, our method can well design some control parameters in order to meet system performance requirement. An algorithm of polynomial complexity is presented to derive supervisory controllers, if existing, to improve system performance. © 2013 IEEE.

Ensuring nonblockingness remains challenging for automated manufacturing systems (AMS) owing to their discrete event dynamics. Both scalability and maximal permissiveness are essential for the synthesis and implementation of their centralized supervisors. Inspired by the divide and conquer philosophy, this work proposes a partition methodology and distributed control technique for large scale AMS. They are represented as interconnected and overlapping subsystems sharing some common components in terms of buffers. For each subsystem, a local supervisor is designed based on its local behavior and neighboring information only. Generalizing the existing results, we develop a condition under which the control law via decomposition promises the maximal permissiveness. Buffer capacities are well designed for the sake of their decomposition into multiple overlapping subsystems. Theoretical results are developed to characterize the behavior compatibility among local controllers. An experimental study illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper and the accompanying tutorial session at the 2013 American Control Conference provide an overview of this transformation. It then highlights three emerging optimization and controls techniques that can help facilitate the necessary changes to power grid design, operation and management.
