Cognitive radio (CR) is a concept which can be used to improve the utilization of scarce radio spectrum resources. A reliable strategy for the detection of unused spectrum bands is essential in a practical implementation of CR systems. It is widely accepted that in a real-world environment, cooperative spectrum sensing involving many secondary users (SUs) scattered over a wide geographical area can greatly improve sensing accuracy. However, some SUs may misbehave, i.e. provide false sensing information, in an attempt to maximize their own utility gains. Such selfish behaviour, if unchecked, can severely impact the operation of the CR system. In this paper, we propose a novel trust-aware resource allocation scheme in a centralized cognitive radio network with a system-level trust model in which trustworthiness is used as social capital to gain system resources. The scheme can detect misbehaving SUs and filter out the malicious attacks while attempting to maximize the total bit rate of SUs. computer simulations are used to illustrate the efficiency and robustness of the proposed scheme under various attack scenarios. © 2012 IEEE.

With the rapid development of service-oriented computing (SOC) and service-oriented architecture (SOA), the number of services is rapidly increasing. How to organize and manage services effectively in repositories to improve the efficiency of service discovery and composition is important. This paper proposes three categorization rules to classify services for a large scale repository to form a relational taxonomy. The service retrieve scope can be drastically narrowed by this taxonomy. Therefore, the efficiency of service discovery and service composition can be greatly improved. We evaluate and compare the performance of the proposed method and other related ones via a publicly available test set, ICEBE05. The experimental results validate the effectiveness and high efficiency of the proposed one. © 2012 IEEE.

Both performance and energy cost are important concerns for current data center operators. Traditionally, however, IT and mechanical engineers have separately optimized the cyber vs. physical aspects of data center operations. In contrast, the work presented in this paper jointly considers both the IT - cyber - and the physical systems in data centers, the eventual goal being to develop performance and power management techniques that holistically operate to control the entire complex of data center installations. Toward this end, we propose a balance of payments model for holistic power and performance management. As an example of coordinated data center management system, the energy-aware cyber-physical system (EaCPS) uses an application controller on the cyber side to guarantee application performance, and on the physical side, it utilizes electric current-aware capacity management (CACM) to smartly place executables to reduce the energy consumption of each chassis present in a data center rack. A web application, representative of a multi-tier web site, is used to evaluate the performance of the controller on the cyber side, the CACM control on the physical side, and of the holistic EaCPS methods in a mid-size, instrumented data center. Results indicate that coordinated EaCPS outperforms the cyber and physical control modules working separately. © 2012 IEEE.

Grid integration of wind power is one of the prime concerns as wind power penetration level is increasing continuously. New grid codes are being set up to specify the relevant requirements for efficient, stable, and secure operation of power system and these specifications have to be met in order to integrate wind power into the electric grid. This chapter discusses several issues of advanced grid codes relating to the wind turbines integration into power system. New grid codes for wind power integration of different countries are presented and compared. In India, share of wind power as percentage of installed generation capacity has exceeded 10% in many states and grid connection standards for wind power are in the process of establishment. Grid code requirements for wind power for Indian power sector have been suggested. System operational aspects of wind power generation with Indian experience have discussed.

The early detection of developmental disorders is key to child outcome, allowing interventions to be initiated that promote development and improve prognosis. Research on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) suggests behavioral markers can be observed late in the first year of life. Many of these studies involved extensive frame-by-frame video observation and analysis of a child's natural behavior. Although non-intrusive, these methods are extremely time-intensive and require a high level of observer training; thus, they are impractical for clinical purposes. Diagnostic measures for ASD are available for infants but are only accurate when used by specialists experienced in early diagnosis. This work is a first milestone in a long-term multidisciplinary project that aims at helping clinicians and general practitioners accomplish this early detection/measurement task automatically. We focus on providing computer vision tools to measure and identify ASD behavioral markers based on components of the Autism Observation Scale for Infants (AOSI). In particular, we develop algorithms to measure three critical AOSI activities that assess visual attention. We augment these AOSI activities with an additional test that analyzes asymmetrical patterns in unsupported gait. The first set of algorithms involves assessing head motion by facial feature tracking, while the gait analysis relies on joint foreground segmentation and 2D body pose estimation in video. We show results that provide insightful knowledge to augment the clinician's behavioral observations obtained from real in-clinic assessments.

Sensor nodes in wireless networks often use batteries as their source of energy, but replacing or recharging exhausted batteries in a deployed network can be difficult and costly. Therefore, prolonging battery life becomes a principal objective in the design of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). There is little published data that quantitatively analyze a sensor node's lifetime under different operating conditions. This paper presents several experiments to quantify the impact of key wireless sensor network design and environmental parameters on battery performance. Our testbed consists of MicaZ motes, commercial alkaline batteries, and a suite of techniques for measuring battery performance. We evaluate known parameters, such as communication distance, working channel and operating power that play key roles in battery performance. Through extensive real battery discharge measurements, we expect our results to serve as a quantitative basis for future research in designing and implementing battery-efficient sensing applications and protocols. © 2012 IEEE.

Low-Photon-Number Optical Switching with a Single quantum Dot Coupled to a Photonic Crystal Cavity

We demonstrate fast nonlinear optical switching between two laser pulses with as few as 140 photons of pulse energy by utilizing strong coupling between a single quantum dot (QD) and a photonic crystal cavity. The cavity-QD coupling is modified by a detuned pump pulse, resulting in a modulation of the scattered and transmitted amplitude of a time synchronized probe pulse that is resonant with the QD. The temporal switching response is measured to be as fast as 120 ps, demonstrating the ability to perform optical switching on picosecond timescales.

This paper investigates the number of quantum queries made to solve the problem of reconstructing an unknown string from its substrings in a certain query model. More concretely, the goal of the problem is to identify an unknown string S by making queries of the following form: "Is s a substring of S?", where s is a query string over the given alphabet. The number of queries required to identify the string S is the query complexity of this problem. First we show a quantum algorithm that exactly identifies the string S with at most queries, where N is the length of S. This contrasts sharply with the classical query complexity N. Our algorithm uses Skiena and Sundaram's classical algorithm and the Grover search as subroutines. To make them effectively work, we develop another subroutine that finds a string appearing only once in S, which may have an independent interest. We also prove two lower bounds. The first one is a general lower bound of , which means we cannot achieve a query complexity of O(N 1∈-∈Ε ) for any constant Ε. The other one claims that if we cannot use queries of length roughly between logN and 3 logN, then we cannot achieve a query complexity of any sublinear function in N. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

We present the design and implementation of a trapped ion-cavity QED system. A single ytterbium ion is confined by a micron-scale ion trap inside a 2-mm optical cavity. The ion is coherently pumped by near-resonant laser light while the cavity output is monitored as a function of pump intensity and cavity detuning. We observe a Purcell enhancement of scattered light into the solid angle subtended by the optical cavity, as well as a three-peak structure arising from strongly driving the atom. This system can be integrated into existing atom-photon quantum network protocols and is a pathway toward an efficient atom-photon quantum interface.

Wireless Ad-hoc and Sensor Networks are the cornerstone of decentralised control and optimisation techniques in numerous sensor-rich application areas. Triggered by the necessity of autonomous operation within constantly changing environments, Wireless Ad-hoc and Sensor Networks are characterised by dynamic topologies, regardless the mobility attributes of their operational nodes. As such, the relative awareness that each node can obtain of the entire network draws the roadmap of viable reconfiguration mechanisms, such as the establishment of bidirectional connectivity. The issues addressed in this paper are related to the bidirectional connectivity conditions over Wireless Ad-hoc and Sensor Networks. Based solely on the relative awareness that each node has of the entire network, sufficient end-to-end connectivity conditions are herein extracted. These conditions, exploiting the notion of relative Delaunay neighbourhoods, formulate the basis of a transmission power adjustment scheme. Without any additional network overhead, the resulting Relative Delaunay Connectivity Algorithm is herein proven to yield an efficient solution to the connectivity issues. Extensive simulation results are offered to evaluate the performance of the network, resulting from the proposed transmission range adjustment, whilst highlighting the benefits of the Relative Delaunay Connectivity Algorithm.
