In applied program settings, such as in natural environment control and education, performance evaluation is usually conducted by evaluators considering both self-comparison and comparison with peers. We have developed the Performance Outcome Scoring Template (POS-T) for assessments with high face-validity in these settings. POS-T puts achievements of individuals or groups in context, i.e. the resulting performance outcome score (POS) reflects a meaningful measure of performance magnitude with regards to internal and external comparisons. Development of a POS is performed in four steps supported by a statistical framework. Software is supplied for creation of scoring applications in different performance evaluation settings. We demonstrate the POS-T by evaluation of CO2 emissions reduction amongst 36 OECD member countries. © 2021, CC BY.

Background: Evidence reveals frequent sugar consumption worsens cognition in animal models, and similar effects on child development are probable. We aimed to investigate the influence of sweetened foods (SFs) on child developmental trajectories. Methods: The prospective cohort recruited 3-month-old children in Taiwan from 1st April 2016 to 30th June 2017. Developmental inventories including cognitive, language, and motor domains, were measured at the age of 3-,12-, 24-, and 36 months old via in-person interviews. We constructed latent growth models with covariates to estimate the influence of SFs on child development. Results: Ultimately, 4782 children (50.7% boys) were included in the statistical analysis. In the cognitive domain, consumption at one year of age significantly affected the intercept, but not the linear slope and quadratic term (intercept: estimate = −0.054, p < .001);consumption at two years of age significantly affected the intercept and quadratic term (intercept: estimate = −0.08, p < .001;quadratic term: estimate = −0.093, p = .026), but not the linear slope. In the language domain, only consumption at two years of age significantly affected the intercept (estimate = −0.054, p < .001). In the motor domain, consumption at two years of age significantly affected the linear slope and quadratic term (estimate = 0.080, p = .011 and estimate = −0.082, p = .048, respectively). Conclusion: We found SFs exposure at different times has different negative effects on child development. Early exposure to SFs harmed children's cognitive function. Relatively late exposure to SFs not only deteriorated children's cognitive and language abilities but also decelerated developmental velocity in cognitive and motor domains. © 2023 The Authors

Elevational distribution affects pedodiversity (a measure or indicator of soil diversity) by controlling factors like climate, vegetation, and water drainage. It plays a vital role as a constant variable in soil formation processes (e.g., mineralization, eluviation, and illuviation, etc.) thus promoting diverse soil types at different toposequence formations. However, the relationship between pedodiversity and elevation at various spatial scales remains poorly understood and obscure, especially for dryland regions. Here, we first derive a national-scale pedodiversity map of Botswana, explaining more than 50 % of the variance. For this map, elevation is among the most important environmental covariates influencing soil diversity. We further examine how spatial scale indicators such as spatial extent (i.e., countrywide, and locally) and resolution (i.e., 90 m, 900 m, 9000 m, and 90,000 m) systematically influence landscape pedodiversity. While viewing the data countrywide, the relationship between pedodiversity and elevation maintained a negative or inverse linear trend (i.e., meaning that as elevation increases, pedodiversity decreases), but when viewed locally—for the small district, it showed a positive or direct linear trend (i.e., both elevation and pedodiversity increase simultaneously). This can be explained by differences in elevation patterns together with complex and dynamic interactions between scale-dependent soil-forming factors like land use type which tend to dominate local scales. Significant differences in pedodiversity related to the spatial resolution of geodata inputs were noticeable, for example, the local coefficient of determination values ranged from 0.06 to 0.65 for fine to coarse spatial resolutions respectively. Together, our findings demonstrate that the relationships between pedogenesis factors (e.g. elevation) and pedodiversity are scale-dependent. Despite years of intense investigation, the mechanisms underlying neuronal death in Alzheimer’s disease, remain incompletely understood. To define relevant pathways, we conducted an unbiased, genome-scale forward genetic screen for age-associated neurodegeneration in Drosophila. We also measured proteomics, phosphoproteomics, and metabolomics in Drosophila models of Alzheimer’s disease and identified Alzheimer’s genetic variants that modify gene expression in disease-vulnerable neurons in humans. We then used a network model to integrate these data with previously published Alzheimer’s disease proteomics, lipidomics and genomics. Here, we computationally predict and experimentally confirm how HNRNPA2B1 and MEPCE enhance toxicity of the tau protein, a pathological feature of Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the screen hits CSNK2A1 and NOTCH1 regulate DNA damage in Drosophila and human stem cell-derived neural progenitor cells. Our study identifies candidate pathways that could be targeted to ameliorate neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s disease. © The Author(s) 2025.

Regional homogeneity correlates with mathematical and scientific talent and intelligence quotient

Mathematical and scientific talented (MST) students are often to thought to those who have high intelligence (IQ). Recently, many studies evaluating the neurological mechanism underlying mathematical and scientific talent indicate that certain talents are associated with different brain structures. Furthermore, white matter microstructure is connected differently in cases of mathematical and scientific talent and intelligence. However, research evaluating the relationship between MST, IQ, and gray matter microstructure using the method of regional homogeneity is rare. To address this issue, sixteen MST individuals with average age 20.91 (SD = 1.75) and 14 typically developed undergraduate with average age 21.72 (SD = 0.92) were recruited to participate this research. Participants were recruited from the Departments of Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Medicine, and Life Science and the Department of Bio-resources and Agriculture of Taiwanese universities. The participants were assessed intelligence using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III and a resting-state brain approach. The present study was reviewed and approved by the research Ethics Center of Taipei Medical University of Taiwan. All the participants signed an informed consent before the experiment began. The results demonstrated that for both the MST and control groups, intelligence and regional homogeneity were positively correlated with the middle frontal gyrus, anterior cingulate, and thalamus. After controlling for the influence of age and IQ, the local efficiencies of the frontal, parietal and temporal lobes, cingulate cortex, insula, and thalamus were higher in the MST group than those in the control group. These results are consistent with portions of the parieto-frontal integration theory that postulate that math-and science and intelligence work together in some brain regions, but operate independently in others. The mindfulness-based intervention and psychological skills training are often used for maintaining the mental health or reducing undesirable mental states in athletes. However, their differences in acute effects on mental health and underlying neural mechanism are not well understood. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to examine the differential effects of brief mindfulness induction (MI) and relaxation induction (RI) on state anxiety, affect and brain activation. Thirty-five track and field athletes were recruited for this study. Using a within-subjects crossover design, participants underwent three conditions that incorporated two 30-min experimental conditions (i.e., MI or RI) and a control condition. State anxiety and affect were assessed before and after intervention, and brain activation (i.e., theta, alpha bands) were recorded by electroencephalography (EEG) during each 30-min condition. Repeated measures analysis of variance revealed that MI and RI similarly reduced state anxiety and negative affect from pre-test to post-test compared to the control condition. In terms of positive affect, there were no significant differences among the three conditions across times. Furthermore, participants exhibited higher frontal theta power during the MI and RI than control condition, whereas no differences in alpha power were observed among conditions. The current study provides initial evidence from an electrophysiological perspective that brief MI and RI both improve the negative psychological states in individual sport athletes through similar neural mechanisms. Nevertheless, the moderating effects of training experiences and long-term interventions on mental state and EEG activity in athletes need further investigation in future studies.

Regular physical activity (PA) is beneficial for cognitive health, and cathepsin B (CTSB) – a protease released by skeletal muscle during PA – acts as a potential molecular mediator of this association. PA-induced metabolic and mechanical stress appears to increase plasma/serum CTSB levels. CTSB facilitates neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity in brain regions (e.g., hippocampus and prefrontal cortex) that support performance in specific cognitive domains including memory, learning, and executive function. However, the evidence regarding the role of PA-induced changes in CTSB as a mediator of PA-induced cognitive health in humans is mixed. To guide future research, this article identifies key factors that may explain the observed heterogeneity in the findings from human studies and proposes a PA–CTSB–cognition model. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Relationships between speech perception, phonological awareness, and speech production in preschool-age children with speech sound disorder

According to the definition of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, in children, speech sound disorders (SSDs) are defined as speech errors that persistent even after a certain age. Studies have shown that children with SSDs may have problems with phonological perception and phonological awareness in the preschool stage. Some studies have suggested that when treating phonological abnormalities in children, training for speech perception and phonological awareness may also improve treatment effectiveness. However, at present, studies examining the relationships between speech perception, phonological awareness, and speech production of children with SSDs are lacking. To develop an effective intervention plan for children with SSDs, the relationship between speech output and speech processing-related variables should be determined. This study systematically examined the correlations between the speech production of children with SSDs and their levels of speech perception and phonological awareness to provide empirical evidence for improving clinical intervention design. By using speech processing models, this study inferred the possible reciprocal relationships between speech perception, phonological awareness, and speech production. Children develop speech perception abilities (such as basic abilities to discriminate and identify speech sounds) in the early stages of development. This basic speech perception ability affects their abilities of speech production and of phonological awareness (e.g., building phonological representations and manipulations). The development of phonological awareness would improve the fineness of speech perception abilities, which in turn affects the capacity of speech production. Moreover, the perceptual and motor feedback provided based on the speech production ability in preschool children may also promote the development of speech perception and phonological awareness in these children.
