The importance of video surveillance applications has been increasing with the increase of crime and terrorism. In addition to traditional video cameras, the use of acoustic sensors in surveillance and monitoring applications is also becoming increasingly important. In this paper, we apply High-Order Local Auto-Correlation (HLAC), which has succeeded in video surveillance applications, to extract features from acoustic signals in order to construct an acoustic surveillance system based on a novelty detection approach. We also apply Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) to this problem. Experiment results confirmed that the AHLAC-based method outperforms the NMF-based and the cepstrum-based methods under all SNR conditions. The combined NMF-AHLAC method was able to improve the Equal Error Rate (EER) at lower SNRs, although the EERs at higher SNRs tend to degrade.

The metal-catalyst-free growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using chemical vapor deposition and the application in field-effect transistors (FETs) is presented. The CNT growth process used a 3-nm-thick Ge layer on SiO2 that was subsequently annealed to produce Ge nanoparticles. Raman measurements show the presence of radial breathing mode (RBM) peaks and the absence of the disorder induced D-band, indicating single walled CNTs (SWNTs) with a low defect density. The synthesized CNTs are used to fabricate CNTFETs and the best device has a state-of-the-art on/off current ratio of 3×108 and a steep sub-threshold slope of 110 mV/decade.

Metric maps provide a reliable basis for mobile robot navigation. However, such maps are in general quite resource expensive and do not scale very well. Aiming for a highly scalable map, we adopt theories of insect navigation to develop an algorithm which builds a topological map for global navigation. Similar to insect conduct, positions in space are memorized as snapshots, which are unique configurations of landmarks. Unlike conventional snapshot approaches, we do not simply store the landmarks as a set, but we build a landmark tree which enables us to easily free memory in case of a continuously growing map while still preserving the dominant information. The resulting navigation is not sensor specific and solely relies on the directions of arbitrary landmarks. The generated map enables a mobile robot to navigate between defined locations and let it retrace a previously pursued path. Finally, we verify the reliability of the Landmark-Tree Map (LT-Map) concept and its robustness on memory limitations.

In this paper we propose a method for handling persistent visual occlusions that disrupt visual tracking for eye-in-hand systems. This approach provides an efficient strategy for the robot to "look behind" the occlusion while respecting the robot's physical constraints. Specifically, we propose a decoupled search strategy combining a naive pan tilt search with a sensor placement approach, to reduce the strategy's computational cost. We proceed by mapping limited environmental data into the robot configuration space and then planning within a constrained region. We use a particle filter to continuously estimate the target location, while our configuration-based cost function plans a goal location for the camera frame, taking into account robot singularity, self-collision and joint limit constraints. To validate our algorithm, we implemented it on an eye-in-hand robot system. Experimental results for various situations support the feasibility of our approach for quickly recovering fully occluded moving targets. Finally we discuss the implications of this approach to mobile robot platforms.

In this paper, a novel biomechanical modeling and simulation environment with an emphasis on user-specific customization is presented. A modular modeling approach for multi-body systems allows a flexible extension by specific biomechanical modeling elements and enables an efficient application in dynamic simulation and optimization problems. A functional distribution of model description and model parameter data in combination with standardized interfaces enables a simple and reliable replacement or modification of specific functional components. The user-specific customization comprises the identification of anthropometric model parameters as well as the generation of a virtual three-dimensional character. The modeling and simulation environment is associated with Prosthesis-User-in-the-Loop, a hardware simulator concept for the design and optimization of lower limb prosthetic devices based on user experience and assessment. For a demonstration of the flexibility and capability of the modeling and simulation environment, an exemplary application in context of the hardware simulator is given.
