We present a combined real-time face region tracking and highly accurate face recognition technique for an intelligent surveillance system. High-resolution face images are very important to achieving accurate identification of a human face. Conventional surveillance or security systems, however, usually provide poor image quality because they use only fixed cameras to record scenes passively. We have implemented a real-time surveillance system that tracks a moving face using four pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras. While tracking, the region-of-interest (ROI) can be obtained by using a low-pass filter and background subtraction with the PTZ. Color information in the ROI is updated to extract features for optimal tracking and zooming. FaceIt/sup /spl reg//, which is one of the most popular face recognition software packages, is evaluated and then used to recognize the faces from the video signal. Experimentation with real human faces showed highly acceptable results in the sense of both accuracy and computational efficiency.

We have developed an electronic circuit to simulate the behavior of the cardiovascular system under normal or pathological conditions. The current, voltage, charge, resistance and capacitance of the circuit correspond to flow, blood pressure, volume, resistance and capacitance of the simulated cardiovascular system, respectively. We have implemented a circuit with two ventricles separated from the systemic and the pulmonary circulation to simulate normal conditions. Vital parameters of the cardiovascular system such as aortic pressure, cardiac output, end-diastolic or systolic volume of right or left ventricle, left and right ventricular pressure, blood volume, pulmonary artery pressure and stroke volume can be obtained. Qualitative and quantitative agreement with the Starling preparation has been achieved for a 120 sec simulation time. We have also simulated pathological situations such as left ventricular failure, mitral stenosis, aortic valvular stenosis, hypertension, pulmonic valve stenosis adjusting the parameters of the circuit components.

Due to the nonholonomic constraint and restricted mobility, the design of stabilizing control laws for a mobile is a challenging problem. Sliding mode control is a robust design methodology based on a sliding surface and a Lyapunov's stability theorem, where the system uncertainties and external disturbances can be handled under the invariance characteristics of system's sliding condition with guaranteed system stability. In this paper, a genetic algorithm is used to optimize the parameters in sliding mode controller for a nonholonomic mobile robot. The effectiveness of the proposed GA based sliding model controller is demonstrated by simulation studies.

Inter-vehicle communication (IVC) networks are a sub-class of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). They have no fixed infrastructure and instead rely on the mobile nodes themselves to provide network functionality. However, due to mobility constraints, driver behavior, and high mobility, IVC networks exhibit characteristics that are dramatically different than those of many generic MANETs studied so far. This paper elicits these differences through simulations and mathematical models, and then investigates the impact of the differences on the IVC communication architecture, including important security implications.

Research in computational neuroscience has been following a model-based approach where data is comprised of digitized streams of sampled analog data, images and voice. The data are generally contained in files and specialized programs are used to analyze the data. In this study we developed a prototype system for indexing and retrieving information for use by an application that analyzes data. The data in the files consist of channels derived from analog and event driven sources. It is also linked to video images associated with the data acquisition. In this research, we developed an indexing capability that threads into the data acquisition and analysis programs to give the system a broad data base capability. We designed tables and relations within the database for indexing the files and information contained within the file. The system has the potential of giving us retrieval capabilities that include analog, event, and video data types.
