The COVID-19 pandemic has expedited the shift in education to online learning, which has exposed shortcomings in virtual learning environments' personalization and engagement. This research addresses these issues by developing a web application designed to enhance student engagement and learning efficiency. The system has gamified collaboration features, video chapter segmentation, and personalized video recommendation system. The methodology comprises models for generating chapter titles and for precise video transcription, and machine learning algorithms for tailored suggestions depending on user input. Interactive Questions and Answers modules and real-time synchronized video playback are included. The results demonstrate how the system's personalized content, interactive tests, and teamwork tools increase user engagement and comprehension. The efficacy of personalized material and real-time synchronization in enhancing learning results is discussed. This innovative approach offers a comprehensive solution to the challenges of online education, creating a more immersive and interactive learning experience. © 2024 IEEE.

Depression emerged as a major public health concern in older adults, and timely prediction of depression has become a difficult problem in medical informatics. The latest studies have attentiveed on feature transformation and selection for better depression prediction. In this study, we assess the performance of various feature extraction algorithms, including principal component analysis (PCA), independent component analysis (ICA), locally linear Embedding (LLE), and t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (TSNE). These algorithms are combined with machine learning (ML) classifier algorithms such as Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB), Logistic Regression (LR), K-nearest-neighbor (KNN), and Decision Tree (DT) to enhance depression prediction. In total, sixteen automated integrated systems are constructed based on the above-mentioned feature extraction methods and ML classifiers. The performance of all of these integrated models is assessed using data from the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care (SNAC). According to the experimental results, the PCA algorithm combined with the Logistic Regression (LR) model provides 89.04% depression classification accuracy. As a result, it is demonstrated that the PCA is a more suitable feature extraction method for depression data than ICA, LLE, and TSNE. © 2024 IEEE.

Federated Learning (FL) has significant potential to protect data privacy and mitigate network burden in mobile edge computing (MEC) networks. However, due to the system and data heterogeneity of mobile clients (MCs), client selection and bandwidth allocation is key for achieving cost-efficient FL in MEC networks with limited bandwidth. To address these challenges, we investigate the issue of joint client selection and bandwidth allocation for reducing the cost (i.e., latency and energy consumption) of FL training. We formulate the problem and decompose it into a holistic subproblem to reduce the number of rounds and a partial subproblem to reduce the costs of FL each round. We propose a joint class-balanced client selection and bandwidth allocation (CBCSBA) framework to address the whole problem. Specifically, for the holistic subproblem, CBCSBA combines MCs into groups, each having data distribution as close as possible to class-balanced distribution;For the partial subproblem, CBCSBA reduces costs by exploratively selecting a group and sequentially optimizing the latency and energy consumption of MCs within the group. Experimental results show that CBCSBA outperforms the baseline frameworks in reducing latency by 28.2% and energy consumption by 25.3% on average in the considered four datasets. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases, resulting in progressive cognitive decline, and so accurate and timely AD diagnosis is of critical importance. To this end, various medical technologies and computer-aided diagnosis (CAD), ranging from biosensors and raw signals to medical imaging, have been used to provide information about the state of AD. In this survey, we aim to provide a review on CAD systems for automated AD detection, focusing on different data types: namely, signals and sensors, medical imaging, and electronic medical records (EMR). METHODS: We explored the literature on automated AD detection from 2022-2023. Specifically, we focused on various data resources and reviewed several preprocessing and learning methodologies applied to each data type, as well as evaluation metrics for model performance evaluation. Further, we focused on challenges, future perspectives, and recommendations regarding automated AD diagnosis. RESULTS: Compared to other modalities, medical imaging was the most common data type. The prominent modality was Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). In contrast, studies based on EMR data type were marginal because EMR is mostly used for AD prediction rather than detection. Several challenges were identified: data scarcity and bias, imbalanced datasets, missing information, anonymization, lack of standardization, and explainability. CONCLUSION: Despite recent developments in automated AD detection, improving the trustworthiness and performance of these models, and combining different data types will improve usability and reliability of CAD tools for early AD detection in the clinical practice. Smart Grids (SG) rely on Home Area Networks (HAN) and Neighborhood Area Networks (NAN) to ensure efficient power distribution, real-time monitoring, and seamless communication between smart devices. Despite these advantages, the use of public communication channels in HAN and NAN networks introduces critical challenges, such as vulnerability to impersonation, physical tampering, and scalability issues in resource-constrained environments. These issues compromise the stability, reliability, and security of SG environments. Existing protocols often fail to adequately address these challenges, particularly in ensuring resistance to physical tampering of supply lines and impersonation attacks. Additionally, they struggle to minimize the computation, communication, and energy costs associated with securing a resource-constrained SG environment. Therefore, we propose a robust key exchange and tamper-resistant protocol for HAN and NAN networks to address these limitations. The proposed protocol leverages the Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) mechanism to offer physical tampering resistance to smart meters. We validate our protocol formally using the Random or Real (RoR) model, which confirms its security robustness. Additionally, our informal security analysis highlights the protocol's resilience against impersonation, physical tampering attacks, etc. We analyze and compare the performance of the proposed protocol, which further demonstrates our protocol's effectiveness and security compared to competing protocols. Moreover, the proposed protocol achieves resource efficiency with 45.99% and 58.85% substantial reductions in computation overhead and energy overhead, respectively, compared to competing protocols. These results showcase the protocol's enhanced security and practicality for resource-constrained SG environments. © 2014 IEEE.

Today, school students are first introduced to geom-etry and advanced mathematical concepts by plotting a graph in 2D and they struggle with 3D concepts since current technologies are either too difficult to grasp or too simple with only drag-drop functionalities disconnected from coordinates. This article presents a 3D graphics library and an interactive, educational system for visualization of a 3D environment where planks of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) can be manipulated by geometric and mathematical functions to produce a 3D building. Throughout, there is a focus on functions, 3D geometry and other underlying mathematics, and links are made with the world of computing, specifically computer graphics, to increase students' interest and confidence. Activities built on this library simultaneously meet multiple curricular objectives: mathematics (including 3D geometry), programming (in Elm, a web program-ming language used commercially), and sustainable development (using a negative embodied carbon building material). © 2024 IEEE.

Artificial intelligence in qualitative analysis: a practical guide and reflections based on results from using GPT to analyze interview data in a substance use program

Language-based text provide valuable insights into people’s lived experiences. While traditional qualitative analysis is used to capture these nuances, new paradigms are needed to scale qualitative research effectively. Artificial intelligence presents an unprecedented opportunity to expand the sale of analysis for obtaining such nuances. The study tests the application of GPT-4—a large language modeling—in qualitative data analysis using an existing set of text data derived from 60 qualitative interviews. Specifically, the study provides a practical guide for social and behavioral researchers, illustrating core elements and key processes, demonstrating its reliability by comparing GPT-generated codes with researchers’ codes, and evaluating its capacity for theory-driven qualitative analysis. The study followed a three-step approach: (1) prompt engineering, (2) reliability assessment by comparison of GPT-generated codes with researchers’ codes, and (3) evaluation of theory-driven thematic analysis on psychological constructs. The study underscores the utility of GPT’s capabilities in coding and analyzing text data with established qualitative methods while highlighting the need for qualitative expertise to guide GPT applications. With the widespread use of language models (LMs) in NLP tasks, researchers have discovered the potential of Chain-of-thought (CoT) to assist LMs in accomplishing complex reasoning tasks by generating intermediate steps. However, human thought processes are often non-linear, rather than simply sequential chains of thoughts. Therefore, we propose Graph-of-Thought (GoT) reasoning, which models human thought processes not only as a chain but also as a graph. By representing thought units as nodes and connections between them as edges, our approach captures the non-sequential nature of human thinking and allows for a more realistic modeling of thought processes. GoT adopts a two-stage framework with an additional GoT encoder for thought graph representation and fuses the graph representation with the original input representation through a gated fusion mechanism. We evaluate GoT's performance on a text-only reasoning task (AQUA-RAT) and a multimodal reasoning task (scienceQA). Our model achieves significant improvement over the strong CoT baseline on the AQUA-RAT test set and boosts accuracy from 85.19% to 87.59% using the T5-base model over the state-of-the-art Multimodal-CoT (Zhang et al., 2023) on the scienceQA test set. Open-source hardware are designs that are publicly available for anyone to modify, distribute, make, or sell. Open-source software is source code that anyone can access, inspect, modify, improve, and distribute. Open-source robotics builds upon the principles of open-source software and open-source hardware. The Open-Source Hardware Association (OSHWA) has a goal to encourage research and foster technical knowledge by making it more accessible and collaborative. The 'Robotics for the Streets' project has a goal to expand open-source hardware in academia by documenting how to use it for service, teaching and research by making a library of resources for others to follow. There is a secondary goal of diversifying science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) by using open-source robotics to increase access to and visibility of STEM technology for marginalized, minoritized, and under-resourced communities. This paper will describe the design, creation and dissemination of the open-source mobile robot platform, Flower∞Bots. Flower∞Bots consist of three robots at the novice, intermediate, and expert levels including Lily∞Bot, Daisy∞Bot and Rosie∞Bot, respectively. These robots have the flexibility and modularity for modification based upon the user's needs. The benefits of this platform include the ability to be appropriate for any level and used for a variety of use cases. This research project is a unique, novel, and innovative practice for engineering education and research because it encourages diverse perspectives and voices to contribute to the creation and improvement of technology. It was hypothesized that this educational robotics platform will serve as a model and pathway for teachers, professors, practitioners, and STEM enthusiasts, with limited resources to engage in robotics outreach, teaching, and research. The platform and guidebook will enable teachers and academics to meet their professional development goals at a low cost. © 2023 IEEE.
