Program analysis tackles the problem of predicting the behavior or certain properties of the considered program code. The challenge lies in determining the dynamic run-time behavior statically at compile time. While in rare cases it is possible to determine exact dynamic properties already statically, in many cases, e.g., in analyzing memory dependencies, one can only find imprecise information. To overcome this problem, we look at the dynamic run-time behavior and use Machine Learning (ML) techniques to learn the relationship between static program features and dynamic run-time behavior. ML yields highly scalable predictors, which are safely applicable when erroneous predictions merely have an impact on program optimality but not on correctness. Once trained, these predictors can be used in a static compiler. In this extended abstract, I present our approach to mitigate the impact of the memory gap using ML techniques and speculative optimizations. The memory gap denotes the fact that over the last decade, computer performance is increasingly dominated by memory speed, which did not manage to keep pace with the ever increasing CPU rates. We consider novel speculative optimization techniques of memory accesses to reduce their effective latency. We trained predictors to learn the memory dependencies of a given pair of accesses, and use the result in our optimization to decide about the profitability of a given optimization step. © 2008 Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings. In software development and maintenance, locating faults is generally a complex and time-consuming process. In order to effectively identify the locations of program faults, several approaches have been proposed. Similarity-aware fault localization (SAFL) is a testing-based fault localization method that utilizes testing information to calculate the suspicion probability of each statement. Dicing is also another method that we have used. In this paper, our proposed method focuses on predicates and their influence, instead of on statements in traditional SAFL. In our method, fuzzy theory, matrix calculating, and some probability are used. Our method detects the importance of each predicate and then provides more test data for programmers to analyze the fault locations. Furthermore, programmers will also gain some important information about the program in order to maintain their program accordingly. In order to speed up the efficiency, we also simplified the program. We performed an experimental study for several programs, together with another two testing-based fault localization (TBFL) approaches. These three methods were discussed in terms of different criteria such as line of code and suspicious code coverage. The experimental results show that the proposed method from our study can decrease the number of codes which have more probability of suspicion than real bugs.

IEEE 802.11e standard is developed for QoS provisioning in WLANs. Admission Control is a mechanism that controls stations to be served in WLANs. In practice, evaluation of admission control plays an important role for QoS support. The goal of this paper is to calculate the WLAN delays with ACs. The delay calculation can be used to guarantee the QoS of the VoIP and video streams, which is divided into three parts. One is the propagation delay. Another is that packets queue up in stations or APs. Lastly, the delay is taken due to collisions. For VoIP and video streams, the second delay is more important than other two delays. Consequently, we will focus on the calculation of the second delay. Some simulations and numerical results are provided and discussed in detail. Experimental results show that the proposed method is more accurate in calculating the delay of packets in WLANs.

The fusion of data from different sensorial sources is today the most promising method to increase robustness and reliability of environmental perception. The project ProFusion2 pushes the sensor data fusion for automotive applications in the field of driver assistance systems. ProFusion2 was created to enhance fusion techniques and algorithms beyond the current state-of-the-art. It is a horizontal subproject in the Integrated Project PReVENT (funded by the EC). The paper presents two approaches concerning the detection of vehicles in road environments. An early fusion and a multi level fusion processing strategy are described. The common framework for the representation of the environment model and the representation of perception results is introduced. The key feature of this framework is the storing and representation of all data involved in one perception memory in a common data structure and the holistic accessibility.

The fusion of data from different sensorial sources is nowadays an often-used method to increase robustness and reliability of automatic environmental perception. The project ProFusion2, which is a horizontal subproject in the IP PReVENT (funded by the EC) was created to enhance fusion techniques and algorithms beyond the current state-of-the-art. The enhancement of the algorithms is strongly connected with the creation of a methodology to describe vehicle environments in an adequate manner to meet the requirements of robustness and reliability. In this paper, the definition of such a general environmental description is proposed and an according general data structure is introduced. This data structure is able to handle all kind of information occurring in a data fusion process. Additionally, an output structure of the perception system is proposed to work as an interface to the applications. The ProFusion2 community suggested a model for sensor data fusion in compliance with the Joint Directors of Laboratories (JDL) model which is a widely known model for information fusion systems ([9]). © 2006 IEEE.

In the automotive field, software development methods and tools are used to cope with the high complexity of automotive software development. However, problems occur with the tracing of information, the assessment and monitoring of the development status, late and thus expensive changes, etc, which lead to increasing development costs and time as well as quality deficits. Our experience with recent projects have shown that the key to solving these problems lies in providing proper answers to the following questions: (1) How can development methods be assembled? (2) How can the use of a variety of development methods be supported by an appropriate tool? To answer these questions, we introduce a tool integration approach that is strongly based on the integration of development methods. The contribution of this paper is (a) a method integration approach that considers fine-grained method objects and their specific structure in addition to the usually considered artifacts, (b) an approach to tool integration that overcomes the deficits of heterogeneous tool environments and utilizes the results of the methodical understanding. Scenarios are extensively used in software architecture evaluation. These scenarios are elicited from stakeholders using either a topdown or bottom-up approach. The former approach uses categorization schemes to focus stakeholders on developing scenarios for each required category. The latter approach uses brainstorming without any explicit categories of scenarios. It is claimed that top-down approach can result in improved quality of scenarios. However, there has been no empirical evidence on the relative effectiveness of the scenario elicitation techniques. In this paper we report on a controlled experiment with 24 subjects (postgraduate and final year undergraduate students with industry experience) in an academic context with the goal to assess the relative effectiveness of the two scenario elicitation approaches. Two groups developed scenarios to characterize quality attributes: the treatment group was given software change categories, the control group was not. The outcome variable was the quality of the scenarios produced by each participant. The average quality score for individual scenario profiles in the treatment group was significantly greater than the control group. All participants using the change categories reported that the knowledge of change categories helped them develop better quality scenarios. Our results support the claim that the provision of domainspecific software change categories helps generate better quality scenarios. Copyright 2006 ACM.
