Human-machine interaction has been the focus of recent research, with data gloves as one of the approaches gaining popularity for their high accuracy and convenience. This paper summarizes the latest research status of data gloves with a focus on the area of glove-based gesture recognition. The core technology of gesture recognition is described in detail from data processing to classification, and a quantitative analysis of the recent research is conducted. We found that though studies on applications and algorithms are the mainstream, the hardware design also accounts for a pretty large proportion of about 30%. Moreover, the number of gestures, subjects, and algorithms for majority of relevant studies has been summarized.

An integrated framework for accelerating reactive flow simulation using GPU and machine learning models

Recent progress in artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) have brought potentially game-changing opportunities in accelerating reactive flow simulations. In this study, we introduce an open-source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) framework that integrates the strengths of machine learning (ML) and graphics processing unit (GPU) to demonstrate their combined capability. Within this framework, all computational operations are solely executed on GPU, including ML-accelerated chemistry integration, fully-implicit solving of PDEs, and computation of thermal and transport properties, thereby eliminating the CPU-GPU memory copy overhead. Optimisations both within the kernel functions and during the kernel launch process are conducted to enhance computational performance. Strategies such as static data reorganisation and dynamic data allocation are adopted to reduce the GPU memory footprint. The computational performance is evaluated in two turbulent flame benchmarks using quasi-DNS and LES modelling, respectively. Remarkably, while maintaining a similar level of accuracy to the conventional CPU/CVODE-based solver, the GPU/ML-accelerated approach shows an overall speedup of over two orders of magnitude for both cases. This result highlights that high-fidelity turbulent combustion simulation with finite-rate chemistry that requires normally hundreds of CPUs can now be performed on portable devices such as laptops with a medium-end GPU. © 2023, CC BY.

The article presents an innovative approach to the rehabilitation process for patients with joint endoprosthetics, focusing on the integration of a specialized software module based on computer vision technologies and the ontological approach. Developed for the Federal Centre for Traumatology, Orthopaedics, and Endoprosthesis in Smolensk, Russia, this system is designed to improve the quality of life for patients by offering personalized rehabilitation plans. The core of the study lies in the application of ontological models and meta-associative graphs for synthesizing individual rehabilitation plans, which streamline the recovery process and reduce the workload on healthcare professionals. This method allows for the processing of large amounts of information, providing detailed conclusions and recommendations for functional correction of the musculoskeletal system. The software utilizes computer vision to analyze patient movement and develop tailored rehabilitation strategies, overcoming the limitations of traditional diagnostic tools like MRI, which may not be suitable for all patients. By incorporating artificial intelligence and augmented reality, the system enhances the accuracy of patient assessments and the effectiveness of rehabilitation plans. Furthermore, the article discusses the application of this technology in the educational process at the Belarusian-Russian University, where students are introduced to cutting-edge software tools that assist in creating personalized rehabilitation plans. This educational integration not only enriches the students’ learning experience but also fosters innovation in the development of new applications for computer vision in medical rehabilitation. The ontological approach, combined with modern technology, represents a significant advancement in the management of musculoskeletal system diseases, offering a more efficient, personalized approach to rehabilitation and recovery.

A vehicular network underpinned by the 3-tier vehicle-edge-cloud infrastructure enables an efficient and safer travel experience. The compute-intensive vehicular applications are often offloaded to the edge and/or cloud servers to enhance the applications’ Quality of Services (QoS). The underlying edge-cloud servers consume a high among of energy. Consequently, it becomes crucial to optimizing energy consumption in the offloading process. Current energy-efficient offloading strategies in 2-tier vehicle-edge infrastructure, do not account for cloud computing energy consumption. In this paper, we address this void by proposing a machine learning-based energy-aware offloading algorithm, which optimizes the energy of the edge-cloud computing platform. The offloading strategy is enabled by the Support Vector Machine (SVM) regression model machine learning algorithm used for the edge-cloud power prediction. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is a promising approach in energy savings.

Resource scarcity is a global challenge, especially in E-mobility. Currently, Electric vehicles (EVs) are considered as an attractive option on a pathway towards low emission mobility. Nevertheless, due to the increasing sales and acceptance of EVs, new challenges arise regarding the scarcity of utilized materials, especially regarding lithium-ion battery systems. Battery production is responsible for the major share of the environmental and economical impacts of the overall EV production. In order to tackle these challenges, resource-efficient processes and a circular use are necessary. Today, a variety of new Industry 4.0 technologies (such as high integrated production systems) are affordable and have reached maturity. Like Industry 4.0, also Recycling 4.0 aims at digitalization of processes but with the focus on the End of Life stage of products. The main goal of the German research project Recycling 4.0 is to develop approaches, which enable advanced information creation, transfer and use along the entire supply chain. In this work, a holistic approach towards an advanced circular economy (Recycling 4.0) is shown. This approach combines methods from different areas (such as economics, mechanical engineering, and computer science) and paves the way towards an advanced circular economy. This paper introduces this approach by discussing the current situation of EV recycling and related judicial fundamentals. Furthermore, the overall approach is introduced, and the discipline-specific sub-approaches are discussed in detail. © 2020 Owner/Author.

Video super-resolution (VSR) on mobile devices aims to restore high-resolution frames from their low-resolution counterparts, satisfying the requirements of performance, FLOPs and latency. On one hand, partial feature processing, as a classic and acknowledged strategy, is developed in current studies to reach an appropriate trade-off between FLOPs and accuracy. However, the splitting of partial feature processing strategy are usually performed in a blind manner, thereby reducing the computational efficiency and performance gains. On the other hand, current methods for mobile platforms primarily treat VSR as an extension of single-image super-resolution to reduce model calculation and inference latency. However, lacking inter-frame information interaction in current methods results in a suboptimal latency and accuracy trade-off. To this end, we propose a novel architecture, termed Feature Aggregating Network with Inter-frame Interaction (FANI), a lightweight yet considering frame-wise correlation VSR network, which could achieve real-time inference while maintaining superior performance. Our FANI accepts adjacent multi-frame low-resolution images as input and generally consists of several fully-connection-embedded modules, i.e., Multi-stage Partial Feature Distillation (MPFD) for capturing multi-level feature representations. Moreover, considering the importance of inter-frame alignment, we further employ a tiny Attention-based Frame Alignment (AFA) module to promote inter-frame information flow and aggregation efficiently. Extensive experiments on the well-known dataset and real-world mobile device demonstrate the superiority of our proposed FANI, which means that our FANI could be well adapted to mobile devices and produce visually pleasing results.

Epilepsy is a brain disorder caused by abnormal discharges of neurons in brain. It is one of the most commonly studied disorders in neurology. The research of epilepsy electroencephalogram (EEG) has become a hot research topic. We find that in epilepsy EEG detection task, many previous methods focused on directly collecting the data of each channel, but these methods seldom analyse relationships between signals. Therefore, we propose the Epilepsy EEG Graph Convolutional Network EGCN, which makes full use of correlations between channels to deeply mine data information. We specifically design 5-layer graph convolutional network structure for classification of healthy and epileptic patients. The method is applied to public data set (Boon and CHB-MIT) to establish a reasonable classification model. And we compare it with some advanced algorithms. The experimental results show that the E-GCN method is superior to many existing methods in classification accuracy. In brief, the E-GCN method can be effectively used in classification and detection for epilepsy. This provides new ideas for colleagues, who study epilepsy EEG. In addition, this also provides richer experience for diagnosis of epilepsy. © 2020 IEEE.

Robust generalization aims to tackle the most challenging data distributions which are rare in the training set and contain severe noises, i.e., photon-limited corruptions. Common solutions such as distributionally robust optimization (DRO) focus on the worst-case empirical risk to ensure low training error on the uncommon noisy distributions. However, due to the over-parameterized model being optimized on scarce worst-case data, DRO fails to produce a smooth loss landscape, thus struggling on generalizing well to the test set. Therefore, instead of focusing on the worst-case risk minimization, we propose SharpDRO by penalizing the sharpness of the worst-case distribution, which measures the loss changes around the neighbor of learning parameters. Through worst-case sharpness minimization, the proposed method successfully produces a flat loss curve on the corrupted distributions, thus achieving robust generalization. Moreover, by considering whether the distribution annotation is available, we apply SharpDRO to two problem settings and design a worst-case selection process for robust generalization. Theoretically, we show that SharpDRO has a great convergence guarantee. Experimentally, we simulate photon-limited corruptions using CIFAR10/100 and ImageNet30 datasets and show that SharpDRO exhibits a strong generalization ability against severe corruptions and exceeds well-known baseline methods with large performance gains.

With the rapid development of the satellite industry, the information transmission network based on communication satellites has gradually become a major and important part of the future satellite ground integration network. However, the low transmission efficiency of the satellite data relay back mission has become a problem that is currently constraining the construction of the system and needs to be solved urgently. Effectively planning the task of satellite ground networking by reasonably scheduling resources is crucial for the efficient transmission of task data. In this paper, we hope to provide a task execution scheme that maximizes the profit of the networking task for satellite ground network planning considering feeding mode (SGNPFM). To solve the SGNPFM problem, a mixed-integer planning model with the objective of maximizing the gain of the link-building task is constructed, which considers various constraints of the satellite in the feed-switching mode. Based on the problem characteristics, we propose a distance similarity-based genetic optimization algorithm (DSGA), which considers the state characteristics between the tasks and introduces a weighted Euclidean distance method to determine the similarity between the tasks. To obtain more high-quality solutions, different similarity evaluation methods are designed to assist the algorithm in intelligently screening individuals. The DSGAalso uses an adaptive crossover strategy based on similarity mechanism, which guides the algorithm to achieve efficient population search. In addition, a task scheduling algorithm considering the feed-switching mode is designed for decoding the algorithm to generate a highquality scheme. The results of simulation experiments show that the DSGA can effectively solve the SGNPFM problem. ITU-R categorized Nigeria into four rain regions (i.e., M, N, P, and Q) depending on the atmospheric conditions. Previous works that have conducted rain and attenuation modeling and simulations have assumed similar signal propagation behavior and parameters within locations categorized under the same region. This paper aims to explore these assumptions by conducting an extensive radio propagation simulations of point-to-point microwave links with a clear line-of-sight in order to estimate the total path loss (attenuation), excess path loss, and flat fade margins for each of the locations within the M-regions, i.e., Kano, Sokoto, and Adamawa. Results obtained showed that in all the locations, the loss monotonically increases with distance, with Sokoto having the highest level of signal losses and fading, while, Adamawa has the lowest. The deviation for both total loss, excess loss, and flat fading margin was found to be between 15 dB across the region. © 2023 IEEE.
