The growing complexity of today's industrial systems motivates many researchers to utilize Event-Based Industrial Automation systems (EBIAS) that enable to flexibly integrate heterogeneous components. However, developers of EBIAS lack efficient methods to verify the non-functional reliability of such systems. This methodological gap complicates the design of complex commercial systems with strict performance requirements. This manuscript (i) describes existing problems and proposes to tackle it with performance modeling, (ii) introduces and compares four performance modeling notations, and (iii) illustrates the approach on a use case dealing with integration of an application designed according to the IEC 61499 distributed automation standard interacting with a SCADA environment in an event-based manner.

Today, public statistical data plays an increasingly important role both in public policy formation and as a facilitator for informed decision-making in the private sector. In line with the increasing adoption of open data policies, the amount of data published by governments and organizations on the web is growing rapidly. To increase the value of such data, the W3C recommends the RDF Data Cube Vocabulary to facilitate the publication of data in a more structured and interlinked manner. Although important first steps toward building a web of statistical Linked Datasets have been made, providing adequate facilities for end users to interactively explore and make use of the published data remains an unresolved challenge. This paper presents a widgetbased approach to deal with this issue. In particular, we introduce a mashup platform that allows users lacking advanced skills and knowledge of SemanticWeb technologies to interactively analyze datasets through widget compositions and visualizations. Furthermore, we provide mechanisms for the interconnection of datasets to support sophisticated knowledge extraction.

Businesses operating with ‘Immovables’ have always demanded high mobility from numerous protagonists within and across the real estate sector. Whereas recent developments of advanced cloud environments such as pervasive cloud and intercloud infrastructures are still in their infancy, their advancements appear to be supportive for this industry. Our contribution refers to the business with real estates as this sector shows several characteristics that predestine it as a showcase due to high and sustainable potential for value generation through clouds and cloud infrastructures. This paper analyses the use of various (types of) cloud applications in the field of real estate. It provides an insight into the structure of the real estate sector (life cycle, value chain, actors), into the state-of-the art of cloud applications, and reveals potential for further developments and unexplored segments of the real estate life cycle and/or value chain.

In this paper we explore the performance of a generic, uni-fied framework for the retrieval of relevant and diverse images from social photo collections. The approach allows for the easy evaluation of di erent visual and textual image descriptions, clustering algorithms, and similarity metrics. Preliminary results show strong dependance between the choice of underlying technology and similarity metric, and the achieved performance.

The Open Data movement has gained momentum among governments, in the business world, and in the public sector in recent years. This movement has resulted in a growing number of open and accessible datasets that have established a solid basis for enhanced service offerings and improved experiences for citizens and businesses. Statistical data, which embodies a big portion of Open Data, comprises a wide range of domains including finance, demographics, transportation, employment, etc. Statistical data plays an important role in public policy formation and as a facilitator for informed decision-making in the private sector. Linked Statistical Data is an evolving concept that combines the richness of Linked Data (a set of best practices for publishing and connecting structured data on the Web) with the descriptiveness of statistical data to integrate data from multiple sources and put it in a semantic context.
